The 1984 media guide, with a roster date of 2/1/1984, lists non-roster invitee, Clint Hurdle as #13.

Hurdle would spend 1984 in Tidewater, where he led the Tides in homers, and of course made the Mets squad in 1985. Still wearing #13.

Hurdle --- like Roger Craig before him and Lee Mazzilli after him --- took 13 as an anti-whammy, trying to shake a string of bad luck by spitting in luck's face.

Pretty much. According to Mets By The Numbers he wore #33 the year before. The number was unused after Neil Allen was traded to Saint Louie 6/15 of 1983.

Nice image of #13 on Hurdle's 1986 Topps card

Also should be noted that he is still wearing #13 today as the skipper in Colorado

It didn't exactly work, since he was with the Mets in '85 and '87, and played with the Cardinals in '86.

Quite the bad timing trifecta.

He was Rule 5'd by the Cardinals sending Davey into a fury. It's a shame he missed out.

Neil Allen --- also took 13 for anti-whammy reasons.
