Holiday Office Parties

Farmer Ted

Had my holiday gig today. The wifey and I hosted 8 peeps from the office at our house. Had the gag/white elephant/secret Santa gift exchange, home-made lasagna and adult beverages. A couple co-workers stayed to help me finish a few bottles of wine and two six packs of Yuengling. I feel like Cooby on a Thursday night, but nothing embarrassing.

How 'bout yous guys?

we had ours on Monday eve... open bar, cheeses, fruit platter, pastries. Plus celebrity writers, other members, lawyers, agents, etc... i hate it.

we have our staff party next week. we do a "yankee swap", which is like 'secret santa', but with a catch. Each person gets to select a gift. Then the next person can either keep their gift or swap it for one that has already been opened. It adds an edge of "fukk you" to a holiday party that i find delicious.

Perhaps you should just call it a MFY swap....

We had our office Christmas gathering on Tuesday. My partners and I closed the office early (2:00 PM) and took our 15 employees out to the restaraunt of their choose for an early dinner and drinks. As in most years, the staff chose a local steakhouse that has a private room for us. After we finished with our meal, we had a secret Santa gift exchange and handed out Christmas bonuses.

Ours is way scaled back this year. Last year I went to, I think , 4 -- all at outside locations -- big lunches or raucous parties. This year, everything is in-house. My department's was yesterday --- cheese and crackers, beer and wine, same people you see every day.

Had our company party yesterday afternoon, nice catered dinner downtown, cute little skit, gifts for all.

Monday evening will be the ladies only office party, dinner at Damon's, gift exchange.

Next Thursday will be our bring a dish to share luncheon. Not sure what to take yet.

We're big on parties.

Pot luck for us. We usually overspend so it's funny to see us go cheapie.

We have several.

1. College family dinner. Saturday night, for families with kids and a visit from the guy in the big red suit. No alcohol, but great hors d'oevres and a terrific buffet.

2. Friar's Party. The big one. Everyone goes to the friary (yes, these are real Franciscan friars) for a spread that's about the best you could find. Wine and beer, plus the really great munchies, including a ham carver.

3. President's party. Afternoon for faculty and staff. Munchies, beer, wine, and much else. Will be interesting this year, since the college closed early due to lack of electricity.

4. Departmental party. Everyone brings lunch, which we eat for the rest of the week.

There used to be an ROTC party, but they stopped and have their turkey shoot, where the best marksman (at a target) wins a turkey.

Farmer Ted, were you there? We were whisked off to a back room before I even had a chance to look around.
I was all set to introduce my friend "Farmer Ted" to every one

Got there at 5:15 and ordered some chicken tenders and fries to go. Hung out by the bar for about 20 minutes. Went downstairs to the two big rooms but they were pretty much empty. I proudly wore by Mets cap, traditional blue!

Campus party on Friday-- lamer than usual. No alcohol (as usual), and a much tamer spread than we are accustomed to. Budgetary woes, we were told.

All we're getting is a lame happy hour at a bar around the corner, then they;re going to fire us.

Well, I think the mass layoffs will wait until January but they're on the way for sure. I may very well survive but I work in a dying industry, for a product built for and around a 20th-century way of doing business, at a bloated company which owns many products doing many more times worse than ours, hastily assembled by a hedge fund, which brought in a new CEO, who announced a 100-day reveiew of business, about 75 days ago.

You don't have to be Bernard Madoff to see where this is going.

Anyone wanna hire me? I'm very good at what I do.

Dec 16 2008 07:43 AM

What do you do exactly?

I don't go to our office party anymore , last one I was at was December 06 . I mostly don't go because the Doctor's I work with long ago stop giving a feck about the party, , well they stopped caring when the Drug reps stopped paying for it. Back then we would have a great get together at places like Crabtree’s Kittle House in Chappaqua. Now it's the Alumni House on campus with buffet food kept hot by the bunsen burner.

I should say that I am not the only one that doesn't go.

The BIG office party is scheduled for Monday. Two hour reception with finger foods and whatnot. Not sure if there will be any booze. The entertainment is a local poet giving a reading. You. Read. Correctly. Couldn't even splurge for a harpist for crissakes.

250 people in my division and only 32 rsvps so far. It's not going to be pretty.

Scaled back this year. Tree trimming (which is quite fun as we are in a renovated mansion and we usually bring in a tall one for the foyer) at noon this Thursday followed by catered food, etc.

Two years ago we brought in carolers, not this year. Our parent company announced salary freezes two days ago (Happy Holidays!), though we did get smaller bonuses, which is nice, considering we're down from last year and down from our projections for this year.

We also usually have a couple women in our administration department who get sloppy drunk, so that's always a plus.

No booze and a poet? How'd they ever get 32 people to say yes?

32 managers and upper management, that's how.

To all of us who are fearing layoffs, let's all keep our fingers crossed and try to muddle through the holiday season with some hopes intact at least.

Really, Farmer Ted, who is the local poet?
