Snow '08-'09

I thought we had one of these, I even thought it was started by cooby,
but can't find it?

Virtually all the schools in Westchester County are freakin' closed and not
a flake has flown! They have it way too soft these days, or I'm just starting
to sound like an old fart, or both.

Both , I'm watching the News on the weatherman is complaining that his kids school was canceled last night at 7Pm.

The commute home sounds like a mess.

That's funny, I never knew that Westchester County was in the "southern" part of the state.

i've got 6-12 inches of snow coming, depending on the upper limits of the report you read. work, sadly, remains open, but the roads coming in today were remarkably untrafficked.

i just wish my snowblower were ready for the season. i've got a flat tire on one wheel that seems very reluctant to seal the bead and take on air, and the belt drive mechanism connecting the motor to the augur and thrower must've got some oil or gas on it, as it slips to the point of uselessness. hopefully with one tire it can still operate as a clumsy snow plow...

Our forecast had included words like "snow", "sleet", and "freezing rain" but now it's just "rain." Possibly turning to snow later tonight.

My daughter was indignant that school wasn't closed, but there was no precipitation at all this morning, so she really didn't have a case. Right now as I look out my window there's light hail, tiny pieces of ice bouncing on the patio.

School in our town was announced canceled at about 5:00am this morning.

According to the wife - the first flakes started flying about 10 minutes ago (10:30).

I guess they do it out of concern of having the school buses running around on a day that's supposed to be treacherous, but c'mon.

Here in lower Manhattan, da flakes be flyin'.

Schools up here in Orange county, NY close at the threat of snow. With schoolkids myself now, I understand the fear of sending out a hundred 60-75 buses on what could be treacherous roads, but come on.

I agree with KC, this is way soft.

There wasn't a bag of that stuff to be had in the greater Danbury area. So it was plain salt, wait, and chip. Took maybe five or six hours spread across two days. My driveway is 100' long, and slanted up towards the street. Very tricky footing when icy.

Caretaker? No thanks, I saw "The Shining".

But I do have a guy who plows when the snowfall amount exceeds 3 inches. But:
1) Plowing does diddly about ice.
2) I still have to clean up anything that fell after he plows, including digging my car out and within 6 feet of my one-car garage. (Yes, wifey's car is in the garage, mine is left outside.)

That's why our current house has a two car garage -- our last one had only one and I never used it.

I used to be the same. We had the 4 distinct seasons in New Mexico growing up and I loved it. Especially the fall with the turning leaves and chili roasting and the hot air balloons and all of that. I later dated this girl from Vermont and spent some Christmases up there and there's never been a bigger pussy on the face of the earth than me up there in the freezing ass cold.

Never missed any of it since.

We had about 2" of very light and fluffy snow overnight into this morning. It was easy to shovel the driveway, and anything that was left over on the pavement melted in the sun this afternoon.

Rockin' Doc
Jan 20 2009 07:23 AM

Run! Take cover! The sky is falling!!! There is 2 inches of fluffy white stuff on the ground and more is steadily falling from the sky. All hope is lost, this must be the end.

At work, waiting for patient's that for the most part believe the above. Only 4 employees (out of 15) and the 3 doctors have reported to work. Shoveled the office walk and we are now waiting for the few patients that will actually bother to come in.

Of course, it would help if the DOT would do something to the roads. So far, not a single plow has been seen and no roads or bridges have been salted. Apparently they are employing their standard tactic of waiting for the sun to remove the snow. That won't be until tomorrow afternoon. Well, I would imagine we'll shut down and go home at noon if it's still snowing.

themetfairy
Jan 20 2009 07:52 AM

We just got about an inch or two in Central NJ. The roads are a little slippery, but not too bad.

Careful on the roads RD - the most dangerous thing you're facing are the people who don't realize they need to drive slowly on slippery surfaces.

Rockin' Doc
Jan 20 2009 10:34 AM

Safely back home. I doubt we did enough business to pay for the utilities and salaries. Our patients are just as wimpy as my staff as my two partners and I combined to see 10 patients (out of roughly 50 appointments) for the morning. During my years in the south, I have really come to hate snow.

Still snowing now with roughly 4-5 inches of the white fluffy stuff on the ground now. Still no signs of the first snow plow or salt truck.

My Mustang wasn't any good on the snowy roads, so I doubled back while driving to the office this morning. Took my daughter's 2008 VW Rabbit which just plowed through the mess without a single slip. Apparently rabbits handle the snow better than horses.

Doc, on the road I drive to work, there are sometimes plows/salt trucks sitting on the emergency turnarounds all set to go to it even when it isn't snowing. I have often seen them sitting there with their lights on and motors running when there isn't even snow in the forecast.

Maybe North Carolina should borrow a few of these go-getters.

I don't mind it to be honest (at least, not until March when I'm tired of it). I am one of the few people in my neighborhood who doesn't own a snowblower. I'd rather get the exercise.
