I don't know when they added the references to Monopoly and Pinocchio to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer but if I ever find out who did it I'm going to throw my shoes at them.

I feel similarly (but less strongly) about the cha-cha-cha in Happy Birthday.

Fun list , I love Diana Krall's version of Jingle Bells..

Thin Lizzy with members of the Sex Pistols doing "A Merry Xmas" , it's on youtube....they went as The Greedies.

One of my all time favorites is "Fairytale of New York" by The Pogues featuring Kirsty McCall.

Nice list. (where can I find A Collective Soul Xmas)?

To the Quality Standard Interpretations list I should add:

"Rockin Around the Christmas Tree" by The Smithereens
"The Holly & the Ivy" by the Roaches (the whole album is terrific)
"Deck the Halls" by Michael Doucet

As usual I plug these guys, the Brothers Figaro:

When my son asks me what he should look for in a girl, I'm going to say one who doesn't think the response lines to Rudolph are cute/funny/sassy/fun.

I find it hard to imagine a non-annoying version of "Santa, Baby."

The disses to "Do They Know..." seem kind of shortsighted. There are many many Christians in Africa. And he's singing of Christmas in a more abstract sense.

It's easy enough to laugh at the lyrics in "Do They Know It's Christmas?" but it is said the Midge Ure wrote most of them in about two minutes in the back of a taxi on his way to meet Geldof.

At least "Do they Know" is a halfway decent song.

The following Xmas songs really suck by the way:

Wonderful Chrsitmastime -- Paul McCartney
Last Chrsitmas -- Gerge Michael

just to name 2.

I hate some of those, maybe even most or all, of those novelty songs.

I've been fortunate that I haven't heard Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer in a few years. Awful song.

i don't blame the guy who wrote that so much as the programmers who keep rotating it.

I'll add to sucky Christmas songs that are nonetheless in rotation: Elton John's "Jump into Christmas." Jump into Christmas?

I'm honestly not all that keen on Springsteen's song. Prefer the version on the Specter album.

Bruce's cover did launch the AOR Christmas tradition, but there's at least as much bad there as good.

Is there a non-live version?

Nope.

Bruce's version of "Merry Christmas Baby" (also a frequent radio staple) is perhaps the superior song.

Feliz Navidad by José Feliciano is another staple that's ok for a few listens.

This is pretty much a home run here.

I could do without the James Brown song, if it's the one I'm thinking of. I have a James Brown Christmas album, and like one track "Santa Claus, Go Straight to the Ghetto," but the rest is not only almost completely filler, but it's filler knocked off from his greatest hits, so you get titles like,

"Santa's Got a Brand New Bag"
"I Feel Good This Christmas"
"It's A Snow Man's, Man's World"

I made up that last one, I think.

I used to have that James Brown album on cassette. Don't know what happened to it. "Santa Claus Goes Straight to the Ghetto" is indeed the best of the bunch.

Soulful Christmas is the one that goes:

"I've got everything I need / around my Soulful Christmas tree/
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year / I love ya, have good cheer"

I like Santa better. Did you know it was recorded at CW Post? For years, it wasn't available and some of the local New York stations would play it. I used to sit there with my little red Panosonic tape recorder waiting for them the play it! You can imagine the sound quality on that....

A Colbert Christmas - The Greatest Gift of All has some interesting stuff. Feist as the angel singing the on hold message that includes, "An authorized prayer technician will be with thee shortly" is hysterical.

Each weekday morning at 10 (replayed twelve hours later) Bay Area station KFOG plays "ten at ten" with songs from a particular year (usually) or genre (on occassion).

Today it was XMAS tunes.

Among those played:

Pogues. Fairytale of NY.
Yoko and John. Happy XMAS (War is Over).
Kinks. Father Christmas.

Once I find the playlist (they update each morning) I'll post it here

I love modern Christmas songs. I have about 1,000 on the iPod, which is ridiculous because I never get to play them all in the course of a holiday season. But here are a number that are very special to me for one reason or another. And my tastes are all over the place.

“New York Christmas” — Rob Thomas
“Love Came Down at Christmas” — Jars of Clay
“Christmas Must Be Tonight” — Robbie Robertson (The “Scrooged” soundtrack version is my favorite.)
“Welcome Christmas” (The fah-who-dore-a song from “The Grinch”) — Love Spirials Downward. (It’s from a dark goth CD, but really beautiful.)
“Listen, the Snow is Falling” — Yoko Ono
“O Come All Ye Faithful” — Twisted Sister
“O Come All Ye Faithful” — Third Day
“Gloria” — MercyMe
“I Celebrate the Day” — Relient K
“Bring a Torch Jenette Isabella” — Carnival Art
“O Little Town of Bethlehem” — Young Fresh Fellows
“Home for the Holidays” — The dBs
“Christmas Wrapping” — The Waitresses
“Sleigh Ride” — The Ronettes
“Reggae Christmas” — Bryan Adams
“It’s a Big Country” — Davitt Sigerson
“Christmas in My Heart” — By The Tree
“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” — the Pretenders
“Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)” — U2
“Winter Wonderland” — Eurythmics (That first Very Special Christmas CD really is spectacular.)
“Blue Christmas” — Robert Gordon, who out Elvises Elvis
“Twelve Days of Christmas” — Bob and Doug McKenzie
"Little Drummer Boy” — Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
“Please Come for Christmas” — Eagles
“Step into Christmas” — Elton John
“Christmas is the Time to Say I Love You” — Billy Squier
“Happy X-mas (War is Over)” — John and Yoko and the Harlem Children’s Choir
“Do They Know it’s Christmas” — Band Aid
“Gloria in Excelsis Deo” — Pond
“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” — Black Watch
“The Christmas Song” — Raveonettes
