Be a Whacky DJ (formerly SONG vs. SONG)

Here are the rules:

I put up an initial battle of two songs. You choose the winner of those two, and one new challenger song. Next guy chooses the winner of those two and puts it against his new entry, and so on.

Please try not to re-enter previously vanquished songs, at least for awhile, and at least try to keep from getting too obscure so everyone can play. We can start a spinoff thread for discussion and videos, etc. --let;s keep this thread moving.

By next Dec. 31 we should have crowned the Greatest Song of All-Time, or at least be on our way.

Got it? I'll start.

But are we talking about a David Cassidy song here? Or is there a cover version? Or a different song entirely but with the same title?

I suppose you can post links if you like, but I didn't wanna make it a requirement: I was kinda hoping this could be a fast-moving drive-by, low-effort, high turnover kinda thread. I also suggested a separate discussion thread to keep it this way but you may do what cha like.

Tough one, but I'll take "Thunder Road" and put it up against Robert Mitchum's "Thunder Road." I know it'll lose, but I really like it anyway, especially in the cover version by bluegrass greats Jim and Jesse McReynolds.

I've always found it interesting how many songs Springsteen wrote where he took the title from an existing song. Always thought it was a really nice tribute to the great stream of American music.

Don't be. It only means that Rogers likes Layla better than Stairway. For Stairway, or any other song to reign supreme here, you'd need advance notice of when this thread is about to end, and then submit your Stairway a post or two before.

I'm confident that when the future pop music historians dig up this thread 20 years from now, they'll understand the dynamics at play here and read accordingly without going apeshit.

Me too. Magic Garden was the first album I ever "owned". I was about five years old when I co-opted that record from my Dad and made it my own. I'd put it on the family turntable and play it endlessly. But that wasn't enough. I had to sit in front of the turntable and watch the record spin all the way through to the end of the record side. That and a circa Adam West Batman record on the Panda label. I remember the Panda on the Batman label because I watched that record spin all the way through to the end, as well.

"American Pie" is not better than "Like a Rolling Stone."

When this thread last veered towards Dylan, I was initially tempted to put up "Like a Rolling Stone" but wisely held back, knowing that I would end the thread.

Why?

Because nothing is better than Like a Rolling Stone. It's the world's greatest Rock and Roll song. Ever. Nothing is going to beat it. Not Thunder Road, not Sympathy for the Devil, not Respect, not One, not Reach Out, I'll Be There, not Let it Be, not even Johnny B. Goode, and certainly not American-freakin-Pie!

Don't know if I showed this goofy photo before. But I interviewed Joe Perry back when he was doing his solo shows -- which I liked a lot -- and he played Nassau Community College.

As you can see, I was 18 and terrifed about interviewing a really famous person for the first time.

Joe, also as you can see, was somewhat high and very bored with my interview, which consisted mostly of me trying to impress Joe by showing him how much I knew about his solo albums.

And, you can't tell, but he was wearing really furry boots.

Alas, he humored me for a while and signed my albums. And I was thrilled.

Evil (Howlin' Wolf) vs. Death Letter (Son House)

Here's a youtube video of Evil, from Howlin Wolf's long out of print psychedelic album This is Howlin' Wolf's new album. He doesn't like it. He didn't like his electric guitar at first either. Anyone out there still waiting for the CD reissue of this album is a real Wolf fan.

God, we loved "Jelly" when it first came out. Saw it on MTV in the middle of the night in our residence hall one night, and laughed so hard we cried. Great song.
