Edgardo Alfonzo: Man of Intrigue

Third baseman Edgardo Alfonzo, who last played in the majors in 2006, is intriguing clubs with his performance in the Venezuelan Winter League. Alfonzo, 35, has a batting average/on-base/slugging line of .322/.383/.483, with eight home runs and 42 RBIs in 60 games. He also lost weight, and could make a worthwhile investment on a minor-league deal, starting at Class AAA and working back to the majors.

I felt bad seeing him play for the Ducks last year. I'm not sure he'd be any more of an adventure defensively at second than the guy we currently have there. If his back is OK, he's worth a minor league deal and a shot to be the 25th man.

Bleeping Timo Perez, forever breaking into his trot...

DETROIT -- Detroit signed outfielder Timo Perez to a minor league contract and invited him to major league spring training. Perez hit .302 with 13 home runs and 63 RBIs last year for Triple-A Toledo.

Seven on the 40-man roster agreed to 2009 contracts: pitchers Kyle Bloom, Alfredo Figaro, Chris Lambert and Zach Simons; catcher Dusty Ryan; infielder Michael Hollimon; and outfielder Casper

Seriously. With the quantity of live arms we've got in our own pen this year I think we could have spared him.

OTOH, I still like the idea of the purging of anyone associated with the 2007-2008 bullpen. I still rankle when Feliciano comes in, and he's the only one left at this point. If he's pitching to a lot of righties in '09 I will eat my hat, blue button and all.

EDIT, well I was half-right. Happ made his debut vs. us in 07 but we beat him. The game I was thinking of was last July 4 when we wasted a mismatch vs. Santana, lost by a run, and I completely gave up the season for the second time.

Weirditude

Truly funny uniform situation as O'Day is just coming in for the Rangers, wearing the #30 of Kason Gabbard. Funny scene as he has to meet all the infielders for the first time on the mound, and he and Salty have to quickly figure out the signs. "What the hell do you throw, anyway?"

He literally made it to the SkyDome (or whatever) about 20 minutes ago, where he's getting called on in the 11th inning where the Texas pen is apparently depleted. (Announcers say Everyday Eddie is the only one available yet to pitch.)

Situation is 1st and 2nd, one out after an IBB to Rolen.

Michael F. Young capped a fun-filled 3-run top of the 9th with a HR to send it to extras:

I. Kinsler grounded into fielder's choice, C. Davis to third, J. Saltalamacchia out at second, C. Davis scored, I. Kinsler to second on second baseman A. Hill's throwing error
- J. Hamilton grounded out to shortstop, I. Kinsler scored
- M. Young homered to deep center

---

On edit: And he throws about 18 balls out of the strike zone before serving up a meatball (TV guys say "he sorta hung a curve" -- yeah, and Joe Morgan is sorta an idiot) to Kevin Millaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

RHP Brian Bannister has given credit to Dr. Andrew Jacobs, the Royals' psychologist, for helping him out of pitching jams. Rusch placed on waivers, Flores likely replacement
by Troy Renck on May 14, 2009
DENVER — Glendon Rusch is the first major casualty of the Rockies’ disappointing start. According to multiple major league sources, the reliever was placed on waivers after Thursday’s loss to the Houston Astros. He’s expected to be replaced by Triple-A left-hander Randy Flores.

Several teammates were upset and disappointed by the move because Rusch is among the most popular players in the clubhouse. Manager Clint Hurdle foreshadowed the transaction Thursday morning when he said that Rusch needed much better results. The reliever was tagged for 12 hits in Wednesday’s loss, raising his ERA to 6.75.

Fine Lee Jenkins cover story this week in SI on Buehrle's perfecto, featuring tidbits 'bout Ramon Castro's participation.

The beauty of a perfect game is that no one ever sees it coming. When White Sox centerfielder Dewayne Wise showed up at the ballpark and did not find his name in the starting lineup, he didn't even bother to stretch. When backup catcher Ramon Castro showed up and did find his name in the starting lineup, he hurriedly went over signs with Buehrle—fastball, cutter, change. "You know," Buehrle said, "I throw a curveball, too." Castro, a May acquisition from the Mets who was catching Buehrle for the first time, had no idea.

Meanwhile, Wise had left the bench and gone down to the batting cage under the stadium to take a few cuts, unaware of what was developing outside. With one out in the seventh Wise heard over the radio "19 up, 19 down," but he was sure the announcer was mistaken. A frequent late-game defensive replacement, he checked the scoreboard for himself. "I'd better go get loose," he said, hustling to the weight room. When the Rays' Evan Longoria flied out to end the seventh, Cooper turned to manager Ozzie Guillen and said, "Now it's real. Game on." Castro ran to the dugout and told pitcher Jose Contreras, "He hasn't missed a spot all day. I think he's going to do it." Contreras replied, "Shut the f--- up." Castro's legs were starting to shake. Jamie's stomach was starting to churn. But the usually expressive Guillen was not getting emotional. He ordered reliever Tony Peña to be ready to face the second hitter in the eighth, Ben Zobrist, prompting some eye rolling in the bullpen.

Wally Backman, fired by the 24-42 Joliet Jackhammers.

Here's the story:
Jackhammers Fire Wally Backman
Submitted by smallballusa on Thu, 07/30/2009 - 18:08

JOLIET, IL-The Joliet JackHammers have announced that Wally Backman has been relieved of his duties as field manager of the team effective immediately. Backman will be replaced by former Joliet hitting coach Ira Smith, who will serve as the team’s interim manager for the remainder of the 2009 season.

“The fans in Joliet deserve a winner,” said Backman. “I’m disappointed that we could not get the job done.”

Backman departs with the JackHammers in sixth place in the Northern League with a 24-42 record. Smith comes back to Joliet after serving as Hal Lanier’s hitting coach during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. He began his coaching career with the Lincoln Saltdogs in 2004 as their bench coach and moved to the role of hitting coach in 2005 before spending two years with the JackHammers. He began a 14-year playing career when he was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1990 draft. Reaching AAA in the Padres and Tigers organizations, Smith first played in the Northern League in 1999 with Duluth-Superior. He logged five seasons in the Northern League (Sioux City, 2000-2001; Winnipeg, 2002; and Sioux City-Lincoln, 2003) before starting his coaching career in 2004. Smith will join the team on Friday when the JackHammers begin a three-game series with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Silver Cross Field.

“We want to thank Wally for all that he has done and all the hard work he has put in,” said JackHammers Executive Vice President/General Manager Kelly Sufka. “He has done everything we’ve asked him to do except for in the Win-Loss Column. Nobody is more disappointed with the teams’ record than Wally. A change needed to be made for our fans sake and this is the change that we believe needed to happen.”

The JackHammers are home this weekend to start a three-game series with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks beginning on Friday, July 31 at 7:05 p.m. Come out to the ballpark for fireworks sponsored by Aramark after the game! For tickets, or for more information, please contact them TODAY at 815.726.2255 (BALL), visit their website

Huber again is hitting decently at AAA: 35 of his 92 hits for XBs and 16 HRs in ~350 ABs
and again can't get any time in the majors, barely 150 ABs scattered over the last 4 seasons

He lost his "prospect" status a while back when he could no longer pretend to be a catcher and is long ago out of options and presumably will be a FA at the end of the year.
I could see him in consideration for a PH & platoon partner w/Murphy if they don't go out and get a full-time 1B this winter

Turns 28 next summer.

So Matsui achieved his 2,000th hit on Saturday night, with a Kazzesque grounder to deep short.

Congratulations I guess.

So what the heck is the Meikyukai all about? In 1978 Masaichi Kaneda, “The Emperor,” one of Japanese baseball’s all-time great pitchers, created the Meikyukai as a “friendship club . . . to promote baseball and contribute to society.” The membership rules are simple: get 2,000 hits, 200 wins or 250 saves, and you’re in.

Those hits, wins and saves can come in NPB or MLB—although foreign-born players who achieve these milestones in the U.S. and Japan are not eligible for membership—and active players are inducted as soon as they reach the milestone. Japanese MLB players like Kaz Sasaki, Shingo Takatsu, Ichiro Suzuki, Hideo Nomo, and Hideki Matsui have all achieved membership.

MFS62
Aug 19 2009 08:42 AM

Which leads me to another question.
Ichiro has been in the majors for 9 years, and has amassed over 1,900 hits with a .330+ BA.
If he plays only one more year here, do you think he will make the MLB Hall of Fame?

The Tigers sell game-used stuff, and there were jerseys and caps from the Negro League tribute day against the Indians. They had plenty of Cleveland Buckeye caps for $25, so I looked for one around my size.

Snagged one with a No. 6 written on the underside of the brim, and checked the roster today. Turns out it's Luis Rivera, first base coach -- and former Met! He played 32 games in 1994, batting .279.

No real Met juice here for me. A bullpen backender, a sixth outfielder with a handful of plate appearrances, a prospect who ripened elsewhere, and a backup catcher. The last guy got the most Met traction for me, despite Oliver lasting a full season with a mop and bucket.

Cardinals
Jose Oquendo-coach
Mike Jorgensen-asst. to GM

Much love for these two Bamberger-era Mets who weren't around for Davey Johnson's rebound. Amazing that these guys were both mid-eighties Cardinal reserves and are there still. Very much Whitey Herzog players --- versaitle and quality defenders. Nonetheless, hard to root for St. Loo under any circumstance, and a special assistant to the GM won't swing that for me. Maybe there's a place for Oquendo on the Mets staff, though.

I think I adopted Ty Walker in the days before we adopted players formally. The Phillies would be team I could get behind --- Cairo or no Cairo --- if their fans could get the Mets hostility stick out of their asses.

Red Sox
Paul Byrd
Billy Wagner
Chris Woodward
Jason Bay-same as Kaz
Dave Magadan-coach
Tim Bogar-coach
Alex Ochoa-coach (3 Guys from the '96 Mets on Bosox team bus?)

I have a lot of love for the 96ers, and the Sox getting Woodward while the Mets have Cora puts things somewhat in order in the universe. I'll root for any team that stands in the Yankees way, but the persistence of Tim Bogar's career confounds me.

Rockies
Bob Apodaca-coach
Don Baylor-like Sammy

I like the Rox for rescuing Kaz Matsui's career. I've certainly got nothing against Ap or Baylor.

Twins
Carlos Gomez
Ron Gardenhire-mgr.
Rick Anderson-coach

The Humphreydome may be the last surviving abomination of a rug-and-roof park, but it's staying alive with more post-season ball has become something to root for, as are Gardy and Anderson. Gardenhire got the job as the longtime lieutanant of the beloved longtime manager. That's almost a parting gift to the retiree, and such appointments almost always fail, and it's to Gardy's credit that it didn't this time.

Tigers and MFYs-none. (except Xavier Nady. Out for the year)

Mora leaves the Orioles having played more games for them at 3rd base than anyone not named Brooks Robinson.
I wouldn't have guessed that one.

C'mon Omar. With all the bullpen issues over the past few years, there's no chance of Pat Mahomes or Bill Pulsipher getting in there?

Aaron Heilman gets around: traded to Arizona for prospects.

The Chicago Cubs traded right-handed relief pitcher Aaron Heilman to the Arizona Diamondbacks for left-handed pitching prospect Scott Maine and first base prospect Ryne White.

Heilman went 4-4 with a 4.11 ERA in 70 appearances for the Cubs last season. He was acquired from Seattle for left-handed pitcher Garrett Olson and infielder Ronny Cedeno on January 28, 2009.

Maine, 24, combined to go 4-5 with seven saves and a 2.90 ERA in 48 relief appearances with Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno in 2009. The sixth-round pick of the 2007 draft reached the Triple-A level in just his third pro season.

White, 23, hit .266 with six home runs for Single-A Visalia last season. He is a Chicago native and St. Rita grad.

How many times do the Cubs think they will catch lightning in a bottle with an infielder named Ryne?
