Freddy Garcia?

="Adam Rubin"] Freddy G deciding between Mets & Yanks January 22, 2009 Free agent Freddy Garcia appears to have narrowed his decision to the Mets and the Yankees, with a decision coming within 24 hours. With the Mets, Garcia likely would be thrust into the competition for the fifth starter's role with Tim Redding and Jon Niese, not as a substitute for signing Oliver Perez, Randy Wolf or Ben Sheets. It's unclear whether Garcia could command a major-league deal. But, remember, most one-year contracts don't become fully guaranteed until the player makes the team anyway, with the team only liable for 30 or 45 days' pay if he's cut before Opening Day. Garcia did make late-season starts for the Tigers last year after returning from shoulder surgery. He had to back off while pitching in winter ball, but that purportedly was muscular-related and not the type of structural damage that led to surgery.

The more competition the better I suppose , not said there is what he would do on the other team , do they have enough starters?...

Rumor has it the Yankees are also in the mix for Ben Sheets.

So I guess the answer is no, they don't feel they have enough starters. (At least, if these reports are correct.)

Perhaps they're still looking for someone to potentially fill Andy Pettite's spot?

As long as Freddie is in addition to a more top-line starter like Ollie or Sheets rather than instead of I have no problem with it.

Pretty good pitcher when he's on -- that just hasn't been recently.

Re: Sheets; I still can't find definitive word on whether the Yanx are at the legal limit on signing Type-A players, although one would suspect that if the answer were 'No' one of these pundits would point that out rather than continue to link them to the likes of Manny & Sheets.

Agreed. Garcia could be very good IF his arm has recovered.

Sheets' agent is Casey Close. Otherwise, we'd be hearing the term "secret team" bandied about.

Daily News reports Freddy is a Met.

I'd be interested in knowing what his base salary is, before the incentives.

Freddy get ready, and rock steady!

Just a minor league deal, so there's still some 'prove it' time left in ST and possibly beyond that in Buffalo.
Wouldn't surprise me if there's some cut off date at which point they either have to bring him up or allow him the option to walk away and try to find another deal.

Up to $9mil with incentives so if he winds up making that much it'll probably be a good thing for the team.

agreed. I hope he can hear 9 mil, and push redding to be the long man. I'm not looking forward to a season of ~5 era and 10-10 record...even from a #5 guy.
