How Should We Kill Time?

themetfairy
Jan 15 2009 04:48 PM

On Saturday we're going to be in the City for the Bar Mitzvah of our friends' son. It's an all day event - the services will be in the morning, but it's an evening reception. So we're going to have a chunk of time to kill in the middle of the day, and D-Dad and I are trying to figure out what to do. The choices that come to mind are -
A movie (perhaps Waltz with Bashir); A Broadway show (kind of pricey since the kids will be with us); A museum; ESPN Zone; or Crashing at someone's place (here's where you guys come in, perhaps).[/list:u]

Normally I wouldn't mind walking around and killing time, but the weather forecast doesn't make it sound like a Central Park kind of a day.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Take a bus to the Yogi Berra museum.

Fake a flat tire or dead battery and just show up for the free food and booze.

Ny83: god will smite you with food poisoning <<<

Generally speaking, I don't believe in god and I certainly don't believe that
if there was one he/she could dish out any punishment at will.

Nah. Been there, and I don't feel like schlepping back into New Jersey in the middle of our day in Manhattan.

It's not a question of smiting, but this is a close family friend - we want to be there to see him read from the Torah.

No, but it came up in the thread.

In any event, it's not a consideration.

themetfairy
Jan 15 2009 06:46 PM

Stop what?

Stop asking for suggestions of how to kill time for the afternoon, or to see if anyone else might be hanging out in the City Saturday?

Going to the services is a given. Going to the party at night is a given. The time in between is up for grabs.

Orthodox and many Conservative Jews observe a lot of restraints during Shabbat (Sabbath), involving things like the use of electricity, music, etc. (I'm not the expert on this - we're Reform, and have always scheduled afternoon receptions for these things). It's not my personal observance, but it's not uncommon.

The other option is to plan the party for the following day, which is even more inconvenient when travel is involved.

I honestly have no idea why you're looking for reasons to get upset.

This is a thread about looking for suggestions about killing time on Saturday. If any of you are going to be around in the afternoon, or have a decent idea about how we can kill a few hours with the kids, let me know.

Sounds like a nice opportunity for family time in the city. The Museum of Natural History has something for everyone. Turn them all loose and say be back at the big dinosaur by a certain time.

Always a possibility. We spent a lot of time at AMNH when we lived in the City and the older two kids were small.

It's too bad that the museum closes at 5:00 now - we used to love spending Friday and Saturday nights there.

Are there any special exhibits there currently that would be interesting for teens and tweens? Or at any of the other museums?

Its right up your family's alley and away from the crowds. Lotsa people don't even know it exists. It'll kill 2-3 hours.

We actually checked it out last August, after we dropped off our daughter at college for the school year. Not a bad choice, but probably not worth a second visit just yet.

A little logistical info would help us.

Please give us the time and approximate location of the morning and evening events. Don't have to be specific, just stuff like upper or lower east or west side, midtown, etc.

Lunch around the Rockerfeller Center skating rink is a pleasant way to kill some time. From there, its a short hop to the MOMA if they've already done the MNH thing. Or the museum of TV (I think around 52 or 53 streets.

Upper West Side, with lunch following services. Not sure when lunch ends, but we'll be killing time until 7:30.

7 Train to Willets Point.

Pay respect to Shea before it falls, check of the Museum of the City of NY and/or the Queens Zoo in the park (both underrated) and then get a bite on Main St. Flushing.

Take a family hike over the Brooklyn bridge, have a pizza at Grimaldi's on the other side, head back.

If it were about 20 degrees warmer, I'd seriously consider that itinerary.

With Saturday's projected temperatures, though, that much outdoors time isn't going to fly.

Museum of the City of New York is a possibility. D-Dad and I were members there years ago - it's a great place.

We had friends in from San Diego a month ago and did almost that exact itinerary (we went to DiFara's in Midwood instead of Grimaldis)...but essentially what's suggested above. Fantastic time.

OCD:
The Museum of the City of New York is actually on the Upper East Side, around 100th Street. The one in Flushing Meadows Park is the Queens Museum.

I know the Museum of the City of New York - it's around 103rd Street and Fifth. A couple of years ago it hosted that nice exhibition about the history of baseball in New York.

We could cab it there if it makes the itinerary.

What does anyone know about the rebuilt Columbus Circle? If we're killing time before a movie, are there decent places there to hang out?

sharpie
Jan 16 2009 07:03 AM

I work a few blocks away. The Time Warner Center has impressive views but there's nothing to do in there except patronize expensive shops or expensive restaurants.

themetfairy
Jan 16 2009 07:07 AM

What shops/restaurants are there?

Window shopping in a heated mall is preferable to hanging outside in sub-freezing temperatures.

OE - Never mind, I found their site[/url:1ccre20i]. Thanks for giving me the name of the place - that helped me find it.

You could go down to Washington Square Park and buy drugs and then partake of them with your family.

I know, not wholesome. But it's still an option (trust me).

The Guggenheim is nice too.

I wasn't serious. I was just echoing a suggestion that Steve Rogers made to a similar request a while back.

Gotcha.

As things are evolving, we may go for a divide-and-conquer scenario. We'd send my daughter to her dorm room downtown along with our older son, and have them meet us at the reception. This would give them some down time and a place to hang out. That would also leave me and D-Dad with just MK to entertain, which is easier than keeping all three of the kids occupied.

Went for the divide and conquer strategy. The older two kids went down to NYU for some down time and shopping. We took MK to see Waltz With Bashir and Bride Wars - two films that are diametric opposites (but the theaters were heated, which was our main goal on the cold afternoon).

The mall at Columbus Circle was indeed upscale, but it was a nice place to walk around for a little while.
