Heilman to the Cubs?

Apparently Aaron won't be a Mariner afterall. Metsblog reports he about to be traded to the Cubs.

He'd get to sniff the rotation there. Swingman Sean Marshall is currently their number five.

Looks like a done deal -- for SS Ronny Cedeno and P Garrett Olsen whom the Cubs just picked up from Baltimore in the Felix Pie deal.

Heilman will rule the Friendly Confines.

Rosenthal has this.

] Sources: Cubs land Heilman from Mariners by Ken Rosenthal The Cubs, unsure of whether they will land Padres right-hander Jake Peavy, made a separate move Wednesday to bolster their pitching depth, acquiring right-hander Aaron Heilman from the Mariners. In exchange for Heilman, the Mariners will receive shortstop Ronny Cedeno and left-hander Garrett Olson, according to major-league sources. Heilman, long coveted by Cubs general manager Jim Hendry, will compete for the Cubs' fifth-starter job or pitch out of their bullpen. Left-hander Sean Marshall and righties Chad Gaudin and Jeff Samardzija are the other candidates for the Cubs' fifth-starter opening. The Cubs retain interest in Peavy, but their quest is contingent on approval from the team's new ownership, which has yet to be finalized. Olson is a pitcher the Padres had sought in earlier three-way Peavy discussions. The deal was first reported by Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000 in Chicago

I would think that moving Olson to Seattle lessens the chances of the Cubs landing Peavy. I also think the Cubs are more comfortable with Marshall being the primary lefty out of the pen than the fifth starter.

I wish Aaron well, and hope he keeps his pitches down when the wind blows out at Wrigley. Unless he's facing the Mets.

I wonder if Aaron moved his stuff across country and got himself a place in Seattle.

I knew he wouldn't be able to handle Seattle.

plus, with harden, they'll need more depth. Looks like Heilman will start as long as he doesn't get hurt or do horrible in ST.

'specially since they just finished trotting him all over the Pac NW for the Mariners caravan & shit. Had him do photo-ops in uniform and stuff too.

I can't believe how much I miss having a caravan.

Among those he'll battle for a rotation spot is fellow Notre Dame alum Jeff Zmardija.

I'm going to guess that being from Logansport, IN and going to Notre Dame makes this as much of a homecoming as Aaron can have in the bigs. Cubs GM Randy Bush said wouldn't attribute Heilmnan's lousy year to any failure of his stuff. The quote in the paper was, "It was a case of poor location … and [a negative] environment for him in New York."

That's fine, though I'd like to see what those elipses replace. The problem there is that, if you believe the environment has consequences for some players, what's the Wrigley crowd going to do to him if he struggles at all?

Ahhh. Now that I see the proper spelling, isn't he the guy who also was a promising football player for Notre Dame? I wondered why I didn't see his name in the NFL box scores this year.

It was a case of poor location; all of his pitches wound up locating themselves in the bleachers.

Yup.
Cubbies dangled some 10 million dollars in front of his face to lure him away from the NFL draft - although he did play one final season on the ND gridiron.

Raw and a bit shaky following a short minor league 'career', but also showed flashes of being extremely nasty.

Based on what I saw at Wrigley last year and the year before, the bulk of the people in attendance were barely aware that a game is going on. It was like a giant meat farm. My buddy Will says, "They're here for a game, but it's not the one we're watching."
