How Did We Miss This?

Apparently, the Cliff Floyd signing by San Diego was accompanied by them clearing roster space by releasing former-number-one-pick and shortstop-turned-pitcher Matt Bush, shortly after he committed career arson.

You don't feel like clicking the link and waiting for the page to load, then scanning the article for the relevant information? Of course, who does? Who has that sort of time? So I'm going to take you right to the nut in paragraph six.

A witness, who requested his name not be used because of the ongoing police investigation, said Bush was drunk, threw a golf club into the dirt, picked up and threw a freshman lacrosse player and hit another one. Bush also yelled "I'm Matt (expletive) Bush," and "(expletive) East County," before driving over a curb in his Mercedes when leaving the campus, according to the witness.
That sounds like a troubled young fellow.

That's not his first brush with the law either.

Bush now looks almost certain to become the 3rd #1 overall draft pick not to reach the majors (following the Mets' Steve Chilcott and the Yanx' Brien Taylor) and the first to have a simple lack of progress keep him out rather than injuries. Going on five years after his drafting and he's still yet to move beyond 'A' ball at this point having already been moved from position player to pitcher in the process.

I am constantly tossing golf clubs around, drunk, in the summer months, driving over curbs and such.

I'm F-fucking-man99. Fuck Bronx County.

The strangest part is that it was high school freshman he was going after.

In other words, children. And --- unless something comes out to clarify this bizzaro report --- random children.

Didn't he have a strange way of getting drafted? Story I heard is that he essentially BSed his way with some higher ups in the Padre organization, and that was how he ended up getting drafted, despite some of the things he said being untrue.

The consensus at the time (that I remember anyway) was that he probably wasn't deserving of the #1 slot although was still considered to be high 1st-round material. Don't know about any "BS-ing".
But Sandy Eggo didn't want to pay extra for the likes of college kids demanding big bonuses (Stephen Drew, Jered Weaver) so they chose him instead as a sort of compromise choice and also because he was a local kid from the Mission Bay suburbs of SD who could probably make it as a pitcher even if his hitting failed him.

It also didn't help that 2004 is looking like one of the worst 1st round crops in recent years - bad timing for only Mets' Top-5 pick (Humber) since maybe Paul Wilson in '94 - and it looks especially bad when compared to 2005 which is shaping up as one of the best.
