We should have proper odds , Redding might be the favorite at 3/1 odds, Niese second favorite at 9/2 odds....and so on...Pedro is a long shot at this stage as he is not signed so get your money down at 100/1 odds....that price is sure to drop as rumors heat up.

Also you should define "5th starter", is it just the fifth person to start a game for the Mets? What if that person clearly doesnt have the 5th starter role thanks to speing training injury? you could easily see the first week or so go Santana-Pelfrey-Perez-Redding-Santana-Pelfrey-Perez-Redding-Maine if Maine is unable to take his first turn for some reason.

While we're at it, let's not forget Competition II - lefty reliever.
The Mets have invited every aging lefty this side of Che Guevarra to camp this year in hope of finding someone to share lefty bullpen duties with Feliciano. Unless they sign one of the still-free agents, the battle could go down to the wire.
And I haven't the foggiest what the odds are on each of the current candidates.
Should there be separate competition threads for each contested position?

Freddie Garcia is the new slight favorite....several bookie associates have been calling me with news that a chap that looks a lot like Jeff Wilpon was seen in several parlors yesterday laying out "big" money on Garcia at 50/1 odds....no doubt trying to diversify his portfolio .
Adam Rubin in the Snooze today has Garcia as the favorite , Mets "insiders" are talking about the team strongest with Freddie as the fifth starter and redding the long man....Neise looks like he will start in AAA

I think Garcia is the favorite, assuming he is healthy. Redding is likely the back up plan should Garcia not be ready for the start of the season.
I guess I'm under the new odds, so I'll put 25 CPF bucks on Garcia at 3/1 and 50 CPF bucks on Redding at 5/1.

Well the important news is that Garcia intends to stay. History shows we'll need 8 or 10 starters over the course of the year and the more options the better. I still believe if Freddy is capable of regaining his strength he's every bit the pitcher Livan is and that's, you know, something to be.
