Hopefully that will fade just like the pillow fight movement faded. And that's what I think they are --- movements. I was asked a half a dozen times to change my status to show my support for health care access, and I was thinking, "Yeah, I agree, but asking us all to roll over like dominoes isn't necessarily an adult way to discuss it." That's no insult to anybody who did change their status because, like I said, I'm with you, and we all probably feel pretty impotent in the face of how things have gone. But it was sort of like using Facebook as a chain e-mail, wasn't it?

Bought a new computer today at J&R. There was a flyer I saw coming in that said if you spent over $50 you got a free gift. So I ask for the free gift. Turns out it is a MFY "final season at MFY Stadium" umbrella. So, the Yankees take their extra promotion crap and give it to J&R (since they are "the official electronics dealer of the Yankees"). Of course I told them that I didn't want their steenking umbrella. My wife apologetically said "We hate the Yankees."

themetfairy Sep 06 2009 08:29 AM Re: Thread without a Purpose 2009 |
B&H Rules! Aside from everything else about B&H, they were really good to my daughter over the summer. Long story short - she bought a laptop, and when it arrived she discovered it didn't have a feature that she wanted. They took it back, let her exchange it for a different model, and only charged her the $15 difference in the price of the two models. No muss, no fuss. Another B&H story is that I bought a little point and shoot from them over the summer (because there was no way I was taking one of my good cameras to pick up MK from Boy Scout camp, but I wanted to have something other than a cellphone camera there). I ordered it on a Tuesday morning, and it arrived via UPS on Wednesday. These guys are fast. Plus they don't promote the MFYs....

I have met the douchiest hipster in the universe. He's in one of my classes, and I swear to God, he's almost a perfect representation of douchey hipsters. Note: Long hair Long scraggly beard Gigantic Buddy Holly glasses that are too big for his face Black tape on said glasses Red flannel shirt Paint-stained women's pants Dirty Converses, half-laced And to top it all off, the world's single WORST tattoo: A teddy bear wearing a shirt with the silhouette of the Commonwealth of Virginia on it, standing on top of a man, holding a HOT DOG, of all things, aloft in the air, with the words "SIC SEMPER TYRANNI" underneath the whole image. This is on the back of his left arm. I mean, there are good hipsters, but then there are truly douchey hipsters, and this guy is the worst I've ever seen.

I've never heard of Baidu, but their spiders have found the cpf. From Wikipedia: "Many people have asked about the meaning of our name. 'Baidu' was inspired by a poem written more than 800 years ago during the Song Dynasty. The poem compared the search for a retreating beauty amid chaotic glamour with the search for one's dream while confronted by life's many obstacles. '...hundreds and thousands of times, for her I searched in chaos, suddenly, I turned by chance, to where the lights were waning, and there she stood.' (Chinese: ??????????????????????;) Baidu, whose literal meaning is hundreds of times, represents persistent search for the ideal."

The girl says, give me a second..comes back and tells me because I have been a longtime customer she can rejig things and wave $250 so my bill would be $150...wow...I paid it there and then and up the minutes on the family plan so as to not ever allow that to happen again...needless to say I could not have been more appreciative

My son came home for lunch today and found a snake coiled up under the pool table in the front den. I was out getting the car cleaned when he called to inform me of our unexpected visitor. I made him promise to leave it alone until I got there. We called the City Animal Control Department and they dispatched a truck. When the woman for animal control arrived it was quickly apparent that she was more terrified of potentially catching the snake than I was. The snake had by this time decided to try hiding and hid behind a decorative carving on the marble fireplace mantle. We eventually moved the obstacles off the mantle using a pool bridge to keep our distance. Then my son then used the pool bridge to pick up the snake and remove it from the house. Fortunately, my son works part-time for the city Children's Museum where he handles the reptiles putting on shows for school children, so he is trained in dealing with such things. After he got the snake outside in the sun, he identified it as a black rat snake and informed me it was harmless. He eventually released the snake in a wooded lot a few blocks from our house.

20 year old college student and part time animal handler at the City Children's Museum. He helps care for a 3 foot alligator, a 14 foot Burmese Python and assorted other animals, so a 3 foot black snake wasn't a big deal to him. Personally, I think he's nuts, but he really enjoys it. If I had to catch snakes for a living our family would likely be living in a cardboard box under a bridge somewhere.

Okay so let me ask some stupid questions Doc - If your son is qualified and unafraid to handle these icky things - why bother calling animal control at all? Why didn't he just remove it himself? And since you don't like dealing with them, why on earth would you tell him to not touch it until you got there?

He said that they look an awful lot alike and he couldn't be sure which it was. Since my son has no fear of snakes and I didn't want him to take unnecessary risks with a possibly venomous snake. I knew that if I was there I could keep him from doing something careless. I called animal control because I thought I would let the professionals deal with the problem. Unfortunately, the woman that responded was ill equipped both in tools (no snake pole or snake hook) and emotionally to deal with the snake. When I saw it was up to us (okay him, not me) to remove the snake, I then allowed him to proceed with the removal using the bridge to the pool table as an impromptu snake hook. Once he had the snake outside in the sun and well subdued he then told me he was sure that the snake was indeed a black snake.

Kong - "Like a shotgun, for starters." That's my chosen companion. I generally carry my 12 gauge Benelli shotgun with me when exploring in the 1200 acres of our hunt club or simply riding in the woods of a friends family land. I generally carry it in a hardshell rifle case mounted to the side of my four wheeler. I keep the chamber empty, but there are 4 or 5 shells ready to cycle through in an emergency. It comes in handy for eliminating copperhead snakes (snake + 12 gauge = small crater where snake was) and warding of coyotes, wild dogs, or other persistant animals. I once encountered a trio of snarling wild dogs while out four wheeling with a buddy. One warning shot over their heads and they took off like their tails were on fire. I hate to imagine us trying to fend those three off if we hadn't been armed for protection.

so.. lets say you lived at, 27 any street, yourtown, usa. and you receive an unexpected package via ups that has your address on it, but not your name, and its from some place you didn't order anything from ever. and the packing slip is clearly visible on the box as well, and it has that same name as the address label, but it says to deliver the package to 207 any street, yourtown, usa. would you: a) keep the box and its mysterious contents b) call ups and have them pick up the box and its mysterious contents c) drive up the street with the box and see if the people who live at 207 any street might be expecting this mysterious box, perhaps even leaving a note cos we just had a box get delivered to our neighbors down at 27 any street, and the packing slip was clearly visible with the correct address. and instead of ever trying to see if the intended recipients of said box might live up the street, they called ups to have it picked back up, and probably sent back to the shipper. luckily, i stopped by their house today, and picked up this box. its a small box, weighs 8 lbs, and contains crib bedding, which we've been getting antsy about not yet having. seriously, how is "c" not the option immediately taken?

the BEAR? you guys remember when we discussed gun ownership? if i lived there i'd have one (along with an 8-foot fence around my property)
|
cooby Nov 30 2009 07:45 PM Re: Thread without a Purpose 2009 |
Yeah, I remember it. I was one of the ones that voted "yes we have a gun". And we do have a fence, cos we have a pool! But it's not 8 feet tall, egads.
|
Nymr83 Nov 30 2009 09:03 PM Re: Thread without a Purpose 2009 |
well the point was tall enough to keep the bears out, i suppose a determined bear would find it way in (likely through) anyway

Retired the cath-ray Hitachi monstrosity today ... I need a freakin' handy man or something. I can't be lugging around 200 lb tv's any- more and I'm going to pay dearly. First Saturday of the month is electronics day at our village dump. Eight big tv's and a half dozen old computer monitors at 9:00 this morning ... amusing sign of the times.

Went to the mall yesterday morning. When I was leaving, I noticed a few things: 1) It had started raining. 2) The rain was freezing when it hit the cold ground. 3) People were falling on their arses on the ice. So, I went back inside until it got warmer and the ice melted. Lots of people were saying that they did the same thing. So, all they could do was wait, and shop some more. I guess it was Mother Nature's stimulus package. Later

Going down Stevens Avenue hill in Valhala at 25 mph all of a sudden I started to slide and I just held those brakes down firmly but gently and it kept me on course. I wouldn't have been hurt but if I slid into the big ass wall on the passenger side like I briefly thought I would it would not be pretty. I'm trading the bugger in on Saturday and it would be my luck to total it and have to pay it off instead of doing the sideways trade up thingie.
