Gee, I used to spend a lot of time in Dayton on business. Hadn't read that paper in a while.

As for multitasking, I once saw a woman driving a van. I may have posted about it here before, She had two restless kids in the back seat, and was turning back to talk to them while she was had a cigarette in one hand and a cup of something (coffee?) in the other. She was exiting a shopping center parking lot (yes, the van was in motion) and steering with her wrists.

The woman I saw may have the record for most concurrent tasks while driving, but the woman from Dayton certainly gets extra points for degree of difficulty.

is it just me or have the number of nigerian email scams increased exponentially lately? i've had 10 or more aday in my spam box and 1 or 2 that even make it to my inbox.

furthermore, i can identify 99.9% as scams from the title alone, why do these people even bother if they're not going to make a better effort? with email scams being such a crucial component of the economy over there you'd think they'd have some sort of training or something.

She was hit at 6:50 a.m. near Tokeneke Road and Cliff Avenue and taken to Norwalk Hospital, police said. The doctors initially thought she had a lacerated spleen but fortunately she did not. Her knee is twisted pretty bad and she tore some ligaments in her thumb. Her face is all scratched up and she's got some deep cuts on her head.

The 58-year-old former Marine now finds himself under attack by his Dallas homeowners association for displaying seven decals on his vehicle supporting the Marine Corps. "To me, it's being patriotic, and it shows that I served," the veteran told FOX 4. The board says the decals are advertisements that violate HOA rules, and must be covered or removed. Otherwise, the homeowners association for The Woodlands II on The Creek --- where Larimore has lived for eight years --- says in a letter it will tow the car at Larimore's expense. The board also threatens to fine him $50 for any future incident. Larimore says the decals, ranging from the Marine emblem to Semper Fi slogans, aren't advertisements for anything. "You can't buy freedom," he reasoned. Some neighbors are outraged. "That is his identity," said neighbor Mary Castagna. "He goes to a lot of the veteran meetings, and it means a lot to him. Everyone else agrees with it; it doesn't bother anybody." "He's in the Marines, and he's proud of it, and I don't blame him," said neighbor Paul Hardy. "If I'd gone through what he's gone through, I'd be kind of proud of it myself." The letter from the board states you can't have any form of advertisement anywhere on your car on your property. FOX 4 cameras spotted bumper stickers for political parties, health causes, and other non-commercial interests on the property as well. One board member said he was unaware the HOA presidents sent the letter and did not know of any issue with Larimore's vehicle. "I will be looking into it," said board member Art Bradford. "I didn't know anything about this. I haven't seen this." The board president was out of town and unavailable. The condo management company did not want to comment

Semper Fi.

He fought for their right to be stupid. He, nor anyone else, is making any money off those decals. (Other from the sale of the decals themselves) And I'd hope that the organizations that sold them are putting the proceeds to good use supporting disabled vets like he is.

Somebody down there needs a good dose of common sense. I hope they reconsider.

I bought D-Dad an electronic item via the Internet for our anniversary. Long and short is that it didn't work.

We tried contacting the company in order to return the shoddy product. Couldn't get through to them.

So last week my credit card bill arrived. I didn't want to be stuck paying for this garbage, so I challenged the charge. The credit card company wanted to hear from the company before issuing me a credit; while I was on the phone with them, the credit card company tried to call the merchant, only to discover that the telephone number the merchant gave them didn't work. Based on that, the credit card company issued me the credit.

A couple of days later, the merchant contacts us with information on how to return the merchandise (which doesn't include the postage - we were responsible for the not insubstantial shipping fees). We took it to the post office and shipped it off on Saturday.

Today I got an e-mail from the merchant, who was distressed to learn that we had already challenged the credit charge. They said that it would interfere with their investigation of their ability to issue me a refund, and instructed me to call the credit card company to un-challenge the charge.

Yeah, right. Like I'm going to do that.

Let them wait to receive their piece of crap back and then they can call it a day.

Gets mad when we are out walking and I want to hold his hand...starts shaking head and arms and screaming , can't go past a playground anymore without him wanting to go in and play , it's like he's got a sixth sense as to when we are going to happen by one.

Throws himself to the floor when he doesn't get what he wants, makes me laugh at times which makes it worse.....still with toddlers it's great because they are easily distracted to something else.

A mob of furious neighbors of an 11-year-old girl raped on her way to school in Philadelphia won't be charged for beating a man wanted for questioning in the case. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said Thursday that no charges will be filed against the group of about a dozen residents of the city's West Kensington section who attacked 26-year-old Jose Carrasquillo. Ramsey added that he doesn't condone violence. The crowd pummeled Carrasquillo for several minutes on Tuesday with wooden sticks, their hands and their feet before police arrived to take him into custody. The attack was videotaped.

If you don't condone violence why are you ruling out charges against a gang of people who beat the shit out of a suspect?

It's like, after the article, they say, "And now here's some commentary from a bunch of idiots." I know they want to encourage participation, and create community, and stuff like that, but to me, at least, it detracts from the credibility of the article to have it share space with the nonsense.

In a dissent, Justice Clarence Thomas found the search legal and said the court previously had given school officials "considerable leeway" under the Fourth Amendment in school settings. Officials had searched the girl's backpack and found nothing, Thomas said. "It was eminently reasonable to conclude the backpack was empty because Redding was secreting the pills in a place she thought no one would look," Thomas said. "Redding would not have been the first person to conceal pills in her undergarments," he said. "Nor will she be the last after today's decision, which announces the safest place to secrete contraband in school."

Fortunately, he's a big, strong young man that is being treated with Tamiflu he should ultimately be fine, but I'm sure it will be a while before he feels well again. Most of our staff is absolutely panicking. Many of them seem convinced that they and their families are now iin danger of being infected. I tried to reassure them, but I don't think I was too successful at easing their fears. The coming week should be quite interesting at our office.[/quote:27zf5ter]

Funny thing. They should be rooting to contract it... with a relatively mild strain and proper treatment, it's the equivalent of a vaccination for later, more virulent strains (the likes of which are likely to come 'round after it circulates for another half-year or so).

Just got back from the ER , got there at 8:30 in the AM and got out at 2pm. I went out yesterday evening to the local park with a friend to do some photography .Walking down a lane to get " the shot' I stood on a large rock to avoid a water puddle and that's when I took a header into the water. Either I slipped or the rock moved quickly when I stood up on it because next thing I'm flipping and landing face down with my left wrist bearing my weight .

No obvious fractures is how the doctor put it after x-rays , another radiologist will review later....wtf?

Very swollen and very sore but I'm fine , the camera also bore the brunt of the fall and after initially thinking it was damaged it's fine now after letting it dry overnight , I still might bring it in to get checked though.

The Toyota of Manhattan commercial (where the guy at the desk is screaming) has to be the strangest commercial I've ever seen. I have no idea why a company would want to be associated with such an unlikeable, crazy guy. Maybe they're trying to copy Crazy Eddie in some way, but it fails miserably.

Then the kicker at the end is the woman who turns, looks into the camera and says "It's true".

Am I missing something here? How does an ad company propose such a ridiculous ad? And what exec at the car dealership looked at that and said "I like it. Let's do this."

They took it back, let her exchange it for a different model, and only charged her the $15 difference in the price of the two models. No muss, no fuss. Another B&H story is that I bought a little point and shoot from them over the summer (because there was no way I was taking one of my good cameras to pick up MK from Boy Scout camp, but I wanted to have something other than a cellphone camera there). I've never heard of Baidu, but their spiders have found the cpf. From Wikipedia: "Many people have asked about the meaning of our name. 'Baidu' was inspired by a poem written more than 800 years ago during the Song Dynasty. The poem compared the search for a retreating beauty amid chaotic glamour with the search for one's dream while confronted by life's many obstacles. '...hundreds and thousands of times, for her I searched in chaos, suddenly, I turned by chance, to where the lights were waning, and there she stood.' (Chinese: ??????????????????????;) Baidu, whose literal meaning is hundreds of times, represents persistent search for the ideal."

My son came home for lunch today and found a snake coiled up under the pool table in the front den. I was out getting the car cleaned when he called to inform me of our unexpected visitor. I made him promise to leave it alone until I got there. We called the City Animal Control Department and they dispatched a truck. When the woman for animal control arrived it was quickly apparent that she was more terrified of potentially catching the snake than I was. The snake had by this time decided to try hiding and hid behind a decorative carving on the marble fireplace mantle. We eventually moved the obstacles off the mantle using a pool bridge to keep our distance. Then my son then used the pool bridge to pick up the snake and remove it from the house. Fortunately, my son works part-time for the city Children's Museum where he handles the reptiles putting on shows for school children, so he is trained in dealing with such things. After he got the snake outside in the sun, he identified it as a black rat snake and informed me it was harmless. He eventually released the snake in a wooded lot a few blocks from our house.

He helps care for a 3 foot alligator, a 14 foot Burmese Python and assorted other animals, so a 3 foot black snake wasn't a big deal to him. Personally, I think he's nuts, but he really enjoys it. He said that they look an awful lot alike and he couldn't be sure which it was. Since my son has no fear of snakes and I didn't want him to take unnecessary risks with a possibly venomous snake. I knew that if I was there I could keep him from doing something careless. I called animal control because I thought I would let the professionals deal with the problem. Unfortunately, the woman that responded was ill equipped both in tools (no snake pole or snake hook) and emotionally to deal with the snake. When I saw it was up to us (okay him, not me) to remove the snake, I then allowed him to proceed with the removal using the bridge to the pool table as an impromptu snake hook. Once he had the snake outside in the sun and well subdued he then told me he was sure that the snake was indeed a black snake.

I'm sure that if i had pushed the issue she would have gone in and got rid of the snake. Just as I would have had no other options existed.

Kong - "Like a shotgun, for starters." That's my chosen companion. I generally carry my 12 gauge Benelli shotgun with me when exploring in the 1200 acres of our hunt club or simply riding in the woods of a friends family land. I generally carry it in a hardshell rifle case mounted to the side of my four wheeler. I keep the chamber empty, but there are 4 or 5 shells ready to cycle through in an emergency. It comes in handy for eliminating copperhead snakes (snake + 12 gauge = small crater where snake was) and warding of coyotes, wild dogs, or other persistant animals. I once encountered a trio of snarling wild dogs while out four wheeling with a buddy. One warning shot over their heads and they took off like their tails were on fire. I hate to imagine us trying to fend those three off if we hadn't been armed for protection.

Copperheads, rattle snakes, and water moccasins are not exactly defenseless. If I have walked and stepped to close enough range that I can "vaporize" them with a shotgun, then they're too damn close for me. It's not like I go looking for them. I would just as soon not come across them at all. I did catch and release the black snake that got in my house recently.* *Okay, my son caught and released it, but at least I didn't kill it.

Re: Thread without a Purpose 2009

so my mom just decided to get a new tomtom 'cos hers stopped working. i decided to take the old one to see if i could resurrect it. well, after hooking it up to the ol' computer, updating the software, and probably resetting it in the process, suddenly it could once again see the gps satellites. then i dropped it about 5 feet onto my hardwood floors, and the screen is cracked. i'm so mad at myself right now.

[quote="cooby":1xxrezuq]Hey, Tyler Swift has a new hairdo. What big news[/quote:1xxrezuq] There are probably screaming arguements backstage at some tv shows (I use that term loosely, but you know the kind I mean) over what story gets more air time, her new hairdo or Tiger Woods. Later

Re: Thread without a Purpose 2009

Went to the mall yesterday morning. When I was leaving, I noticed a few things: 1) It had started raining. 2) The rain was freezing when it hit the cold ground. 3) People were falling on their arses on the ice. So, I went back inside until it got warmer and the ice melted. Lots of people were saying that they did the same thing. So, all they could do was wait, and shop some more. I guess it was Mother Nature's stimulus package. Later

The older I become, the more frequently I find myself attending funerals. It is a somber reminder of the brevity of this life.

Isn't that the truth? I found out last week that a guy I used to know in college passed away of a heart attack (!) last month. He was the same age as me!

TCM played Gone with the Wind to commemorate its 70 year anniversary. I'm thinking if I had to compile an all-time Top 5, Vivien Leigh would probably start off that list.

I had a couple too many decaf Irish Coffees while watching the St. Petersburg Bowl. But at least Rutgers is winning.

Re: Thread without a Purpose 2009

Going down Stevens Avenue hill in Valhala at 25 mph all of a sudden I started to slide and I just held those brakes down firmly but gently and it kept me on course. I wouldn't have been hurt but if I slid into the big ass wall on the passenger side like I briefly thought I would it would not be pretty. I'm trading the bugger in on Saturday and it would be my luck to total it and have to pay it off instead of doing the sideways trade up thingie.

tmf: That happened to my dad once <<< Totaled a car right before trade in or broadsided a big ass wall sliding down a hill or both? I shouldn't have been on that road but wasn't thinking and went that way out of habit. So, I get a little luck out of a pretty unlucky 2009!
