where do you get these lineups so early?

KC
Aug 31 2005 07:22 PM

I use the usatoday 'scores' page. The lineups are usually posted from 'the
ticker' a good hour before the game most nights.

Zvon
Aug 31 2005 07:26 PM

Beltran may be startin to heat up with the bat.
We sure could use it.

singles 1st time up.

Valadius
Aug 31 2005 07:27 PM

What?

Oh, it's 7:26 and the game is on. Didn't notice that.

Zvon
Aug 31 2005 07:30 PM

Beltran steals 2nd, and Floyd brings him home.

Nice.

1-0 Mets

Aug 31 2005 07:30 PM

i sure would like to see a bit more matsui. neither he nor cairo is doing much, but at least matsui has speed, and speed is fun to watch.

little bit of an mvp chant for wright i think i hear.

yea, and even the Phils announcers mentioned it.

Cripes, they had a perfect shift on for Jacobs.
Those bastards

Elster88
Aug 31 2005 07:40 PM

No Met pitcher will pitch a no-hitter with Beltran in the outfield. Which means we're waiting at least six more years.

Zvon
Aug 31 2005 07:42 PM

after the 1st inning leadoff double by Rollins, i thought Pedro may not have his stuff today.
But now he's lookin fine.

Phils were all off stride by his pitch selection that inning (2)

seawolf17
Aug 31 2005 07:43 PM

Mike Piazza who?

that looked like an instant replay of last nights.
yeaaaaaaaaaaaa

Mets 2-0

Valadius
Aug 31 2005 07:47 PM

Castro really wants that starter's job.

Zvon
Aug 31 2005 07:48 PM

on both he kinda walked from the batters box and went a lil to slow and looked a lil to long.
i hope they dont plunk him,cuz then Ill have to go to the next Philly homestand and get all up in their face

Zvon
Aug 31 2005 07:51 PM

i love the way that not only does Martinez make the best of what he has on any given outting (off speed stuff, so far 2nite) but how he sets the pace of the game and the other team just finds themselves going along with it.

The Phils are swingin their bats, not lookin at too many pitches, and helpin Perdo out.

Valadius
Aug 31 2005 07:53 PM

Cairo... oh boy.

seawolf17
Aug 31 2005 07:54 PM

Cairo HBP in his right hand. Maybe he's hurt! Take him out! Put him on the DL! Send him to Norfolk! Send him to Ecuador! Just get him out of there!

GYC
Aug 31 2005 07:54 PM

Probably the only way we can get this good-for-nothing scrub out of the lineup. But I do hope he is ok.

OW!

Cairo takes one for the team.

I hope that noise I heard was from the bat.

I dont wanna see Beltran bunting here.
hes swingin well
Why does he do that?

ok,ok, so your a team player..i get it.
Got it in May.

Bret Sabermetric
Aug 31 2005 07:56 PM

THIS MAY BE THE ONLY CHANCE TO GET A GOOD 2B MAN--if Cairo busts his hand four hours before the August 31 deadline, maybe they'll call up Hernandez.. No, sorry, Cairo's walking to 1B. Just your garden variety HBP.

Zvon
Aug 31 2005 07:58 PM

NO WAY---HE DIDNT LEAVE THE BASEPATH!

WHAT WAS HE SUPPOSED TO DO?
STOP?

Zvon
Aug 31 2005 07:58 PM

Utley didnt even run to the ball, he ran to cairo.
Could he have done that intentionally?

Nymr83
Aug 31 2005 08:00 PM

]THIS MAY BE THE ONLY CHANCE TO GET A GOOD 2B MAN--if Cairo busts his hand four hours before the August 31 deadline, maybe they'll call up Hernandez

hernandez could still replace one of our DL'd guys on a potential playoff roster even if he isnt on the roster before the 31st, no?

Zvon- the fielder has the right to make a play on the ball, unfortunately the baserunner must stop or go around him. it was the proper call.

Zvon
Aug 31 2005 08:01 PM

I assume you guys are watchin, if your not let me know and ill try and explain that last outrageous output by me

I understand the runner has to give the fielder room, but Utley choose to try and get around the side of cairo that was away from the direction of the ball. Fortunate for them, cuz Beltran beats out that grounder and I dont think they get Cairo at 2nd.

Bloody Howard.

Zvon
Aug 31 2005 08:27 PM

whew.
I thought that rip by Lofton was gonna go over Diaz's head.

Perdo get thru the inning and the Phils strand Lieberthal at third.
Phil announcers were hoping for a wild pitch, and thats gotta tell you something.
And pedro only has 4 a them all year, lol.

Zvon
Aug 31 2005 08:29 PM

do your stuff Reys.
singles and steals second on the 1st pitch.
And what a jump.

Zvon
Aug 31 2005 08:45 PM

YESS.
Pedro gets out of a jam.
2 HUGE Ks and a popup by Bell.

Pedro also had something to say the the Phils bench there, after the Burrell K.
I dont think they want to get Martizez angry.

They wouldnt like......(u know the rest)

ugh, what a catch by Lofton off Floyd.

seawolf17
Aug 31 2005 08:48 PM

How does Kenny Lofton make two Willie Mays catches in one inning? Dammit.

GYC
Aug 31 2005 08:48 PM

BURN IN HELL LOFTON!!!!!!!!!

Zvon
Aug 31 2005 08:50 PM

OMG
Lofton does it again!!!!!!!!!

cripes.

That was Jacobs 2nd ML double, and Lofton robs us of the run.

seawolf17

And Lieberthal hits the Phils' third solo shot. 3-2 Bad Guys. Come on, Pedro.

seawolf17
Aug 31 2005 08:56 PM

And justlikethat it all falls apart.

Zvon
Aug 31 2005 08:57 PM

Lieberthal smacks one out.
Phils have 3 runs, all on homers.
Mets are on the dwonside, 3-2.

7th inning.

Well, guess we just have to comefrombehind again 2nite.

Great play by Wright on that bunt by Lofton.

SHITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

Utley smacks his 2nd.

5-2 Phils, and they get insurance runs.

Crap--Abreu doubles.

Im stunned.

And now its raining.

If it ends now cuzza rain, this is a suspened game cuz it was tied.
Mets have to bat for it to be official.

ScarletKnight41
Aug 31 2005 08:57 PM

5-2 at the 7th inning stretch.

Fuckshit :(

a torrential downpour would be nice right now. anyone remember the time it rained so hard and fast that bobby v had to lead the team out onto the field to help with the tarp?

Zvon

The Mets have them right where they want them. False confidence is in
our corner.

This is first game in Pedro's CAREER that he gave up four home runs in
a game?? Did I hear that right?

Castro leads with a single.
Afew more and we are back in bidness

Aug 31 2005 09:03 PM

I remember a game at Fenway when the Mets hit four homers, although maybe only three of them were off Pedro. Maybe Bret remembers because he was at that game too.

Phils announcers were wondering about this and I do believe that may be the case.

And FRAKIN utley gets 2 of em.

Ya think it might help?

Its awfully quiet there.
Dugout looks like a morgue.

And now it pourin.
and its official.

And Bell almost rings Bell's bell but he gloves that liner.

Zvon
Aug 31 2005 09:20 PM

Urbina gets beltran with a middle in changeup, and Floyd looks like a fool on that outside pitch, as he seems to have all this week.

Well, this is what i didnt want to see, which is facing Wagner in the 9th.
But isnt this when wierd things happen?
When you least expect it?

Course it is...........itsAbaseball

Zvon
Aug 31 2005 09:24 PM

I hear thats the 3rd time pedro has given up 4 HRs in a game.
they say he did that twice in 1998.

Zvon
Aug 31 2005 09:37 PM

id like to give out afew awards before the game is even over.

Utley gets the player I will now love to hate the most award.

The Homeplate ump gets screw of the game award for squeezin Pedro on that one pitch, that changed his whole pace (pedro went for a little walk around the infield after that one, lol) and was the turning point of the game, in my mind.

Mets get the From High To Low award for makin me feel so hi one nite, and so low the next.

Bell gets the EMPTY OUT THE STADIUM award for allowing the Phils to score and score again and make a comeback look impossible.

The Cranpool forum gets the doldrums award, for makin less noise when the Mets r down, almost quieter that the fans actually at the game.

I get the optimist of the night award.

Bret gets the pessimist of the year award.

I don't know any specifics, but I don't think there's any question he's hurt. The disappearance of his fastball should prove that.

A healthy Pedro doesn't throw many curveballs - mostly fastball/changeup.

A news piece a few months ago said he wrenched his foot, which he did last year too. It's a bit worrying.

Zvon
Aug 31 2005 09:54 PM

tomorrow is a day game, right?
Well, lets go get em tomorrow.

Tuff loss friends....

That's why I asked. Some people on forums are watching the Mets or the
Phillies feed and likewise some are listening to one or the other. Others are
following online here or while watching play by play on a site.

Pedro's hurt sounds kinda ominous.

Sep 01 2005 01:17 AM

ugh, definately a tough one to sit through tonight. Somehow I had a feeling it would blow up in our face with the Mets up 2-0 and the Marlins trailing at the same time. It was just too good to be true, the thought of the Mets having the Wild Card lead entering September 1.

Bret Sabermetric
Sep 01 2005 04:21 AM

Pedro's done an unbelievable job for yuz all year long, and you've got to expect an off night now and then. The real problem is that you've been depending on him to supply a great game every five days, rain or shine. Well, tonight it rained.

You know, one funny thng about that night the Mets ganged up on Pedro in Fenway Park in 1998, WP, is I was gloating about the Mets' abfab performance to Theo's dad and another Red Sox Nation author in the bleachers, really giving them teasing and mocking, and they seemed to take it just fine.

Rotblatt
Sep 01 2005 10:21 AM

No, I agree with Bong. Petey's hurt. I thought he wasn't finishing his pitches--after he released, it seemed like he was pulling back a little bit, which, IIRC, affects velocity & location. Now, the home plate umpire was tight as hell last night, at least from where I was sitting (which was pretty darn far away, but Castro barely had to move his glove at all on most of the balls), but Petey's velocity in innings 2-5 was sitting at around 81-82, occasionally getting up to 84-85. In the 6th inning after giving up the HR, he ponied up to 90 mph to get through the inning. In my mind, that should have been it for Petey, despite the 82 pitches thrown. And yet Willie didn't so much as get someone throwing in the bullpen throughout the entire 7th--even after the double by Abreu.

And Peterson never made a trip to the mound, which confused the hell out of me.

Don't get me wrong, I thought it was amazing that Petey fooled them through 6 innings--it's a testament to how smart of a pitcher he is--but you just CAN'T tell me he couldn't have used an extra day here or there. 6 man rotation, Willie--DO IT. In the "I told you so" department, I believe I started a thread sometime back in June advocating a 6-man rotation built around giving Petey an extra day off every turn--and on keeping Glavine on regular rest.

Speaking of Willie, I was pissed at him for a few reasons: 1) starting Cairo. He looked like shit out there, especially on those two strikeouts, and the second one, with Reyes at second, struck me as grounds for an immediate benching. I totally had the same uncharitable thought as Bret after he got hit, immediately followed by "The only thing he's good for these days is getting hit by pitches." 2) Leaving Petey in there. IMO, he should have been pulled after the 6th, but DEFINITELY after he gave up the single to Rollins. 3) Not pinch hitting for Cairo in the eighth. He'd looked terrible all night long.

I also wanted Willie to pinch run for Castro in the bottom of the seventh. Put Matsui out there and have him steal a base or something, but Castro's been en fuego and I can see not wanting to take him out.

It looked to me like Floyd gave up on his at bat in the eighth. He looked terrible on every single pitch.

Lofton's two catches really put the nail in the coffin, but Cairo getting called out on that play in the 3rd hurt too. I had no idea of what happened and assumed Cairo had gotten tagged somehow by Utley. As Beltran sped towards first, I found myself thinking "He's hit safely six straight times in a row," then immediately blamed myself for incurring the wrath of the baseball gods, who proceeded to taketh away--Beltran was quiet the rest of the night after that call.

A hard wind was blowing intermittently out towards the left field pole, and I've no doubt that Howard's HR was aided by wind--I thought for sure Floyd would catch it as it left the bat.

The crowd was in full playoff mood last night for the first 6 innings. We loved our Mets--especially Petey, Wright & Castro--and were confident they'd roll to a victory. Once Beltran stole second in the first, we all knew Floyd would drive him home, and that Wright would do SOMETHING good to follow. The "MVP" chants raised my hackles a bit--I thought we should, you know, wait for him to complete an at bat before serenading him, and my fears were realized when Wright took a HUGE swing at a pitch in the dirt. He settled down after that and got what looked like a good-natured ribbing from the first-base coach after he drew his walk. DiamondVision showed Wright with a huge, shit-eating grin on his face as the coach jawed in his ear.

After Myers had control problems in the first, Diaz maddingly began the second by swinging at the first pitch and grounding out. When Castro stepped to the plate, the crowd gave him a standing ovation, and if Floyd made us happy with his RBI single, Castro put us into a state of delirium with his first-pitch HR. No one sat down until Castro came out for a curtain call. Nonetheless, Myers got through the inning having thrown only 7 pitches.

Once Petey gave up his second home run, however, it got eeriely quiet, and "shock" is the only word for the atmosphere after Utley's two-run jack. Bret-like bandwagoneers started jumping ship, but the rest of us hung tight despite the rain to see Bell shut down the Philies in the eighth and await our second straight comeback. Cairo hit the ball pretty sharply, but right at Utley, Beltran went down on some nice pitching, then Floyd embarassed himself.

After Bell got Utley, we thought we were home free, but Beltran couldn't get to Abreu's double, a fact which enraged a very drunk fan behind me, who launched into an explitive-laden rant against Beltran. Looked like there was no chance to me, but I DO wonder if Cam could have gotten there . . .

I viewed the ninth as an interview for Wagner, and he didn't do so well. No hits, but he looked a wild out there and Castro just scorched the ball. A great play by Bell should have ended the game--that offline throw was inexcusable. He had all day to double up Wright.

All in all, last night was tough. It's the second straight Petey-pitched game I've gone to where I've been confident we were going to win only to see it go up in flames. As dissapointing as last night's loss was, however, it was still only one game and we're still in the hunt. Time to wake our bats up and win this motherfucking series.
