Mets had 5 2 out RBIs yesterday.
A winning team has to do that chit.

That Francouer guy.
Keepin him down is big.

Ive been watching him cuz i picked him up the week after he came up on one of my fantasy baseball teams, and he has been doing nothing but hitting and driving in runs.
The kids sick.

Trachsel takes care of him to end the inning, and believe it or not , thats big.

1-1

Sep 05 2005 02:28 PM

awsum inning in the field for matsui.
Talk about range.
Almost robs that single then makes a clean pick of the shorthop linedrive and turns it into a double play.
Great play.
very niiiiiiiiiice indeed

Zvon
Sep 05 2005 02:33 PM

damn that AndrooJones.

He looked like he creeped up on that liner.
What a catch.

Robs Reyes and thats big, keepin him off 1st.

I used to love watchin Dykstra dive head 1st into linedrives, but Jones makes it look so smooth.

It looked kinda like this:

he aint livin up to his contract, but Im not the one payin him.

Diaz shoulda bowled estrada over there and removed him from the game with extreme prejiduce.

Now the Braves get the lead off double and tag up on beltran.
Beltran dont even make it look close with that throw.

Mets appeal, to no avail.

Trachel has done what he does over 90% of the games he starts (not sure if that a real or accurate stat) goes deep into a game and keeps his team in it. He has pitched well so far, but if the Braves score here it takes alot of wind out of our sails.

Big K for the 2nd out.

get out of it trashy

Zvon
Sep 05 2005 03:27 PM

whew.........he gets out of it.
No matter what happens (if trash should pitch more, and he might if he dont bat this inning,up to 95 pitches) I think Trachsel has pitched a fine game here.

You hold the Braves to 2 runs in a game like this during the stretch run, you should hit and beat em.

Damn that shift on Floyd.

a basehit is a wicked groundout.

*Z shakes his fist at the TV*

Zvon
Sep 05 2005 03:34 PM

huminahuminahuminaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Wright walks.
Mienky singles him to third.
And he just slides in safe taggin up on Castros fly to center.

If Jones threw him out I would have throw the TV out the window.

Chipper robs Diaz with a diving grab of his grounder for the 3rd out.

But the Mets tie it.

Now i dunno.....Im not a pitch count freak, so its not that, but I wonder if you run trachsel back out there. he's been gettin a lil more reachable every inning.

Im thinkin we could use a fresh arm here for the hold, but we shall see the way the ball bounces.
Trachsel stays in.

lead off single by the Braves.

I dunno,i guess you HAVE to let Trash start the inning.

But i think he's done his job for the day and now someone else should be doin theirs.

Big break for the Mets with the pop up out on the bunt.

Let's not pretend the failure to win here had anything to do with Willie Randolph.

Zvon
Sep 05 2005 04:12 PM

okay.
its official.

beltran does suck.

he looks at the fattest pitch of the day for a called strike and then swings at two untouchables.

That was painful to watch.

Another game the mets should have won and could have been played differently.

Any other team in the hunt, in the situation we were in, would have gone to an 8th inning set up man there. Esp to get a fresh arm vs. the Jones's.
Trash aint no 25 yr old pitcher, and Willie stayed with him too long.

I know it would be economical, playing a tie game, to try to make him last until his hitting slot comes up, but this aint April (and this aint EAmvpBASEBALL-the video game i play) and you have to do things at this time of the year a lil differently, and use what you have while you are in it, and pay the price tomorrow, if you must pay a price at all.

i dont understand why you bring up arms when you expand the roster, but you dont play smart and use em. And Im not talkin Shingo in the clutch. Save him for moppin up.
We had Hernandez,Bell,Hielman, Padilla,Ishii even. All experienced arms that have a job to do.
Let em do it, for good or bad.

If they succeed, we keep rolling.
if they fail we aint goin anywhere in the long run anyway.

This loss is MOST disappointing.

Im sure Bart Splunkerlagen is chuckling as I type.

Elster88
Sep 05 2005 04:15 PM

Call me pessimistic, but I don't think the choice of pitcher makes a difference here. Chipper Jones is Chipper Jones. Which means he beats the shit out of the Mets. Atlanta is Atlanta. Which means they don't lose to the Mets at home. The only hope we have of beating the Braves is after that prick retires.

you cant lay that just on beltran. If not him, someone else ,or afew would be eating up that $$$ and youd be payin the same prices.
Blame those prices on the state of the game.
Ownership/union/players as a whole.
Dont hang that on one guy who just played the existing market well.

Elster88
Sep 05 2005 04:18 PM

Ticket prices and parking prices rose before Beltran's contract was signed, I believe.

Nonsense. A couple of hits where we needed them and this game could have been a rout on our side. Not to mention Diaz doing more at the play at the plate, Trachsel realizing he had a DP if he wanted it, etc etc etc.

I think you have to place this loss, like so many others this year, on the fact that we just don't hit enough. No amount of strategy or magical players on the other team is going to change that.

OTOH, we can say something similar like that about every Met loss to the Braves. If this had happened, and this hadn't happened, etc. etc. And the Braves still seem to come out on top and Chipper still has a lot of Met-beatings to his credit.

Sep 05 2005 04:38 PM

I've grown to fucking hate Willie, but I think JD is right not to blame him here. Starting Trachs off in the 8th wasn't a bad move, although I would've yanked him after Furcal reached. Maybe the first inning wouldn't have been as ugly had Trachs not been given 9 days off, however . . .

Sending Diaz was a good movie, too.

The real quibble with Willie for me is the lineup, meaning Beltran shouldn't be hitting third, but frankly, I'm so relieved that Cairo's not in there, I'm giving him a pass on it.

As for not hitting enough, JD, what game were you watching? Our guys batted .265 today with a .342 OBP. That's pretty damn good--much better than the Braves, in fact. The problem was that we didn't score runs, mostly due to some good defense by the Braves. And, of course, that all but two of our hits were singles.

We played good, but we got beat. It'll happen. This hurts a lot less than the times when Willie just blatantly fucks up, IMO.

Beltran makes me crabby. On his wannabe-sac fly, he saw about 6 fastballs in a row and couldn't do better than a 200 ft fly ball on the 7th? Weak. Give me David Wright or Cliff Floyd in that situation every goddamn time. He's going to have a lot of catchup to play the next 6 years.

And what was with Reyes swinging at the first pitch AGAIN with a runner on and no one out in the ninth?

Matsui looked good out there today. I hope Willie keeps him in.

Anyway, we looked pretty good out there today, if you ask me. We just needed a little luck. Or Beltran, circa 2004.

Zvon
Sep 05 2005 04:53 PM

yea, i think we all are a lil crabby and pissed over this one.

The Mets could have used some 'timely' hits in this one, so i hear ya JD.

The Braves did outplay us with the glove and the arm and the clutch hit, so i hear ya Rot.

If Chippers homer was a fly to the track, everything would be different right now, and chipper never just reaches the track vs the mets. He a professional MetKiller. Its his calling.

If you dont keep up with the jones's, and you dont shut down Francouer (not a factor 2day batwise), you aint gonna beat the braves.

If your starter gives you 7 innings of 2 run ball vs the braves and your not up by 2 yet, you probly aint gonna beat the Braves.

Theres many ways this could have gone, and i wish it went, but.........yep...

Sep 05 2005 10:32 PM

I feel somewhat responsible for this defeat, not as responsible as the offense, but I didn't adequately educate the team about what awaited them in Atlanta. I will be sure to enlighten them before tomorrows duel between Pedro and Smoltz. Then, if they still don't score more than a pair of runs, it won't be on my head.

Edgy DC
Sep 05 2005 11:11 PM

I was switching during the game to a riveting Glenn Ford western called 3:10 to Yuma, and switched back in time to see Chipper Jones rounding the bases. That's on me.

IMDB says a remake is due out this year. The original (1957) was written by Elmore Leonard. Who knew he went back that far?

Rotblatt
Sep 06 2005 07:22 AM

Beltran's fly was shallow, but I think it's defensible to send Diaz there. He's got good speed and Franceour had to make at least a good throw to get him.

"Good" might be too strong a word, but I think it's defensible.

As for the movie version, it wasn't as good as Nemo, but much better than Chasing Amy. But the ending sucked.

Edgy DC
Sep 06 2005 09:01 AM

I think Francouer's arm is higher on the chart than Diaz's footspeed.

Diaz stays, and the Mets have two outs, yes, but their cleanup hitter is up with the bases loaded and the pitcher forced to throw strikes. They may lift Davies for a LOOGy like John Foster, but he's kind of wild.

The Mets were one hit away from taking control of yesterday's game about four times.

Rotblatt

Agreed. And Beltran was the main culprit two of those times.
