I figured I'd make an official thread. ]Trachsel latest target The Red Sox have discussed a deal for New York Mets right-hander Steve Trachsel , but the conversations have been casual and no deal is close, industry sources indicated last night. The Mets have a surplus of starting pitchers and might be willing to part with the 35-year-old veteran. Trachsel has been sidelined with a back injury that required surgery in March. He pitched eight shutout innings Friday in his 2005 debut. New York is in search of offense and could use help at first base. The Mets are said to have an interest in either John Olerud or Roberto Petagine. Ironically, Olerud played for the Mets between 1997-99 and Petagine was a Met in '96 and '97. But the Mets would want far more than a 30-something first baseman in return, and would likely ask for a top prospect, also. Another significant move could be coming today with the addition of Steve Trachsel. Sources from multiple teams said the Sox and New York Mets were involved in serious discussions last night about a deal that would bring veteran right-hander Trachsel to Boston for one or two minor leaguers. Trachsel returned to the mound for the first time in five months (following surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back) Friday and allowed only two hits in eight scoreless innings against the San Francisco Giants, but he learned shortly thereafter that he was being skipped the next time through the Mets' rotation. Trachsel and New York GM Omar Minaya denied Sunday that a trade was being mulled, but that apparently changed yesterday. One source said that the Sox and Mets were close enough to a deal that they were simply settling on the minor leaguer(s), but another said that the sides weren't close but were still talking. Trachsel, 34, has cleared waivers, which facilitates a deal. Players need to be in an organization by the end of August to qualify for inclusion on postseason rosters. The acquisition of Trachsel would solve the problem of who is going to start in place of suspended David Wells Friday in the series opener vs. Baltimore. If Trachsel's not around, the Sox will probably opt for calling up Lenny DiNardo for the fifth time from Triple-A Pawtucket. Jonathan Papelbon appears to be an unlikely candidate to start because the Sox are leery of overtaxing the rookie's arm by moving him back and forth between the rotation and bullpen. Harville, 28, was 0-2 with a 4.46 ERA in 37 games for the Astros this season but he had a 1.17 ERA in his last 13 appearances dating back to July 17. If we're getting two minor leaguers, I'd assume that Shoppach is one of them. No idea about the other, but SoSH thinks it might be Alzarez. I'd do that deal, I think. If we just get one, I hope it's Pedroia or Ramirez. We might have more of a hole at C than 2B, but they're both much better prospects than Shoppach . . . Sounds like a lot, but as I mentioned in the other thread, we really have the Sox over a barrell. Trachs is the best pitcher available and he would be a pretty significant upgrade for the Sox, providing some stability on a seriously fucked up rotation, and allowing them to move Arroyo back into the pen. Let's make the New Mets all about pillaging the farm systems of contenders. And, you know, making the playoffs or whatever.

If the Mets can get young prospects, make the playoffs this year, and strengthen an AL contender that doesn't play its home games in the Bronx, then it's win-win-win.

I like Abe Alvarez, because he's part of the silly hat club: The cool part is that it's not because he's some kind of punk; he's blind in his left eye, and the jaunty hat offsets the light.

I believe Youkilis was placed on waivers, claimed, then pulled back by the Sox, which makes him ineligable to be traded. Otherwise, I'd totally use him at 1B. He's also played some second base, which would be pretty sweet for us.

He's legally blind in that eye, but perhaps processes enough to aid whatever depth perception he needs to pitch well. But I've thought about this --- perhaps Rockin' Doc has a more informed opionion --- and I think that binocular vision isn't absolutely necessary to hitting, as the ball comes across your field of vision, rather than straight at you. It would be harder, I guess, to play catcher, first, or centerfield. Only way to test that hypothesis is to patch up one eye and head to the batting range.

Tried it. Can't hit with one eye. Can't hit with two. Conclusion: Second eye makes no difference.

I could be wrong, but as far as I'm aware the presence of a second eye is vital for judgement of velocity.

I would think hitting with one eye would be like hitting a baseball in a vid game. Two demensional. That is to say: easier. :wink: Just focus on the spin and angle. Depth shouldnt be such a big deal. Its a forgone conclusion that the ball is coming at you. :D In MVPbaseball I batted .380 this season. 8)

So he's a zero as a hitter. Different from no other pitcher then.. As the board's token Red Sox fan.. Shoppach = Would be your 2006 Met opening day catcher. Petagine = Would be good for RIGHT NOW as he's a 1B who actually can hit. He has, for no real good reason, been utterly buried by the Red Sox. Alvarez = Servicable starting pitcher/relief pitcher. Probably a future LOOGY, but has enough stuff to be a John Halama type.

Just adding: The Mets put Trachsel thru waivers before he pitched that gem on his comeback. Omar may have a bigger plan brewing here, more to help the Mets future. I doubt they move him now. Trash will be a very nice off season commodity since he did pitch so well. And it seems like the Mets want to freeze all other teams memory of him right there.

Well, if they're moving him before 9/1,it may be part of the reason, he's not getting back in the rotation. As Dickshot said, his trade value almost certainly plummets with subsequent use. If they've got to deal, I'd still prefer Glavine, although that's naturally more complicated, with his right to refuse. There's the advantage of Boston being a big shopper, and Glavine being a New Englander, but Fenway can be a tough adjustment for lefties coming in. And the Sox know it.

Curt is getting just POUNDED tonight. He's given up 6 hits (3 for extra bases) and 4 runs 1.2 innings. Call Theo NOW, Omar!!! on edit: make that 7 hits (4 for XB) and 5 runs in 1.2.

Trachsel doesn't want to be dealt RHP Steve Trachsel hopes the Mets don't trade him, even though he has been sent to the bullpen. Trachsel said he needs 60 to 70 pitches to warm up and doesn't expect to be used in close games. After missing all of the season because of back surgery in March, he returned to beat San Francisco last weekend, pitching two-hit ball over eight shutout innings. The Bombers were offering Felix Rodriguez in exchange for the Mets righthander, but were quickly rebuffed. Cashman has some balls.

So they were never as close as advertised on sending Trachsel to the Red Sox -- since Boston was also trying to add relievers, not subtract them. And the Dodgers -- who had the one unclaimed reliever the Mets liked (Duaner Sanchez) -- weren't interested in Trachsel. I would have taken Duaner Sanchez. He wears goggles.
