Love the pain.

When Diaz batted in the 9th I said to Ms. Shot, "I hope he gets on just to see us lose with tying run at the plate rather than on deck."

That's how we get through this. Love the pain.

This is a House of Pain...

Pack it up, pack it in,
Let me begin, I came to win, battle me that's a sin.
I won't ever slack up,
Punk you better back up.
Try and play the role, and yo the whole crew'll act up.
Get up,
Stand up, (c'mon)
C'mon throw your hands up,
If you've got the feeling,
Jump and touch the ceiling.
Muggs lets the funk flow,
Someone's talkin' junk, yo,
I'll bust him in the eye, and then I'll take the punk's ho.
Feeling funky,
Amps in the trunk,
And I got more rhymes than there's cops at a Dunkin' Donuts shop.
Sure 'nuff I got props,
From the kids on the hill plus my mom and my pops.
(chorus)
I came to get down,
I came to get down,
So get out your seat and jump around!
Jump around!
Jump around!
Jump around!
Jump up, jump up, and get down!
Jump (times 17)

I'll serve it out like John McEnroe,
If your girl steps up, I'm smacking the ho. (slap)
Words to your moms,
I came to drop bombs,
I've got more rhymes than the bible's got psalms.
And just like the prodigal son, I return.
Anyone stepping to me, you'll get burned.
'Cause I got lyrics, but you ain't got none,
If you come to battle, bring a shotgun. (shotgun)
But if you do,
You're a fool,
'Cause I duel
To the death.
Trying to step to me, you take your last breath.
'Cause I got the skill,
Come get your fill,
'Cause when I shoot to gif,
I shoot to kill.

(chorus)

I'm the cream of the crop,
I rise to the top,
I never eat a pig,
'Cause a pig is a filthy animal. (um... "cop")
Or better yet, a Terminator,
Like Arnold Schwartzenegger.
Trying to play me out,
Like as if my name were "Sega."
But I ain't goin' out like no pro, bitch.
Get used to one style, yo and I might switch.
And up up and around...
And buck buck you down.
Put out your head
And then you wake up in the dawn of the dead.
I'm coming to get ya,
I'm coming to get ya,
Spittin' out lyrics,
Homey, I'll wet ya.

(chorus)

Ah, sweet sweet pain. I'd say the Mets had perfected the art, but the Sox still probably have that market cornered.

I think Edgy has a point. Tonight could have been MUCH more excrutiating. I'm sure once The Plan has become clear, though, this game will be rightly viewed as an exquisitely painful cog in the Wheel of Misery 2005.

I'm thinking the Plan includes losing tomorrow against the Braves, then sweeping the Cardinals & Nats. Then, miracle of miracles, we take 2 of 3 against the Braves to put is into a WC tie and get us all giddy as little school girls. We go on to win 2 of 3 against Florida, the Nats & the Phillies and sit with a 3 game lead in the still tight WC race and only one game out of the division title. Each of the next four nights, a different Colorado scrub takes a different Met reliever deep in the ninth to deny us a postseason berth.

Florida makes it to the WS based on Delgado's heroic late-season performance, but in the seventh game, Leiter, Small & Chacon combine on an 18 inning, no-hit shutout that the Yankees win as a fist-pumping Jeter singles in Cano from second.

Ill take all a this.
Ill take anything the Mets give me.

When it comes to baseball and the Mets my pain is tempered by my solid foundation of great experiences and following them thru the yrs 74 to 84.(and sticking with them-even thru the Midnight Massacre when Seaver was F'd and our offensive hopes rested with Kingman and Foster)After those ten years, everything is relative.

While I think we all agree with Zvon's point that it's better to have our hearts broken in September than realize we suck in May, my question is:

Would you rather see your playoff chances die at the hands of the hated Braves (again) or at the hands of a spoiler (read: D-Rays v. Yanks and Mariners v. Oakland)?

Ahh
My leathers fit tight around me
My whip is always beside me
You want the same thing every day
I'll teach you love a different way
You'll learn to love me and my sweet pain

My love will drive you insane
Sweet pain, my love will drive you insane

And pain has got its reason
And if you don't stop your teasin', baby
I'm gonna show you now
You'll get your lovin' anyhow, anyhow
And you'll get to love me and my sweet pain

My love will drive you insane
Ahh, sweet pain, my love will drive you insane

Ahh, you get to love me any way I say
Ahh, you get to love me and my sweet pain

Oh
Pain has got it's reason
You find it pleasin', yes you do, yes you do
And I'm gonna show you now
You'll get to love it anyhow, anyhow and
You'll get to love me and my sweet pain

My love will drive you insane
Ahh, sweet pain, my love will drive you insane
Sweet pain my love will drive you insane
Sweet pain my love will drive you insane
Ahh, sweet pain (sweet pain) my love will drive you insane
Sweet pain (sweet pain) my love will drive you insane

Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girlchild in the dark
Comes in bells, your servant, don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart
Downy sins of streetlight fancies
Chase the costumes she shall wear
Ermine furs adorn the imperious
Severin, Severin awaits you there
I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears
Kiss the boot of shiny, shiny leather
Shiny leather in the dark
Tongue of thongs, the belt that does await you
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart
Severin, Severin, speak so slightly
Severin, down on your bended knee
Taste the whip, in love not given lightly
Taste the whip, now plead for me
I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears
Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girlchild in the dark
Severin, your servant comes in bells, please don't forsake him

"..roll all night and party every day

I feel uptight on a Saturday night
Nine o' clock, the radio's the only light
I hear my song and it pulls me through
Comes on strong, tells me what I got to do
I got to

Get up
Everybody's gonna move their feet
Get down
Everybody's gonna leave their seat
You gotta lose your mind in Detroit Rock City

Get up
Everybody's gonna move their feet
Get down
Everybody's gonna leave their seat

Getting late
I just can't wait
Ten o'clock and I know I gotta hit the road
First I drink, then I smoke
Start up the car, and I try to make the midnight show

Get up
Everybody's gonna move their feet
Get down
Everybody's gonna leave their seat

Movin' fast, doin' 95
Hit top speed but I'm still movin' much too slow
I feel so good, I'm so alive
I hear my song playin' on the radio
It goes

Get up
Everybody's gonna move their feet
Get down
Everybody's gonna leave their seat

Twelve o'clock, I gotta rock
There's a truck ahead, lights starin' at my eyes
Oh my God, no time to turn
I got to laugh 'cause I know I'm gonna die
Why

Get up
Everybody's gonna move their feet
Get up
Everybody's gonna leave their seat

Our Top Ten "Kick in the Groin" Losses of 2005

4/4/05
With Pedro Martinez set to pick up his first win as a Met, Braden Looper gives up back to back HR's to Adam Dunn and Joe Randa giving the Reds a come-from behind Opening Day win. Just for good measure, Reds closer Danny Graves picks up the win.

5/22/05
Pedro dominates the Yankees for seven innings but in the 8th, back to back errors by David Wright and Jose Reyes opened the door for the Yankees. They come back to win and take 2 of 3.

6/26/05
The Mets take a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth looking for a sweep of the Yankees. Looper fails to record an out and the Yanks salvage the series finale on a two-run Giambi single.

7/8/05
With the Mets leading 5-1, the Pirates score four runs in the ninth off Braden Looper. They push across the game-winner in the tenth on Humberto Cota's decisive single.

8/3/05
With the Mets leading 4-2 after 6, the Mets give up single runs in the 7th and 8th. Lyle Overbay's 2 run single in the 9th gives the Brew Crew the come from behind win.

8/4/05
With Braden Looper unavailable, Willie Randolph calls upon Roberto Hernandez in the ninth to protect a 9-7 lead. Hernandez is clearly tired, gives up 5 runs and the Brewers come from behind for the second straight day to win 12-9.

8/11/05
In a 1-1 game against the Padres, outfielders Mike Cameron and Carlos Beltran suffer a horrific crash landing both players in the hospital. Beltran would return a week later, but Cameron is lost for the season with multiple fractures in his face. David Ross, who reached when his fly ball fell between the two outfielders, eventually scores the winning run.

8/14/05
Five outs away from giving Mets fans their first no-hitter in franchise history, Pedro Martinez loses his no hitter when Antonio Perez triples with one out in the eighth. Things go from bad to worse when Jason Werth follows with a 2 run HR and the Mets suffer a gut-wrenching 2-1 loss to the Dodgers.

9/3/05
With the bases loaded, two outs in the seventh, Willie Randolph calls upon Shingo Takatsu, recently called up from Norfolk, to protect a 4-2 lead. Miguel Cabrera greets him with a bases clearing double and the Marlins go on to win 5-4.

9/7/05
Tom Glavine's gem is wasted with Braden Looper fails to protect a 2-1 lead in the ninth. The Mets rally to take the lead again in the 10th, but Looper is unable to get the job done again. After loading the bases with no one out, Randolph removes him from the game. Two batters later, Ryan Langerhans' single wins it for the Braves.

In all seriousness, this year has had an unusually high number of these gut-wrenching losses. I feel like in 99-00 all we did was win exciting games...the 10 run inning...the Matt Franco hit off Rivera...the Brad Clontz wild pitch. This year has just been painful blow after painful blow. How bad is it? The extra inning Dioner Navarro HR off Looper and Matsui's error against the Yanks don't even make this list...

House of Pain
Faster Pussycat

A little past suppertime
I'm still out on the porch step sitting on my behind,
Waiting for you.

Wondering if everything is alright.
Momma said, "Come in boy, don't waste your time." I said, "I've got time.
Well, he'll be here soon."

Five years old and talking to myself.
Where were you? Where'd you go?
Daddy, can't you tell?

I'm not trying to fake it
And I ain't the one to blame.
There's no one home
In my house of pain.
I didn't write these pages
And my script's been rearranged.
No, there's no one home
In my house of pain

Wasn't I worth the time?
A boy needs a daddy like a dance to mime and all the time
I looked up to you.

I paced my room a million times.
And all I ever got was on big line, the same old lie.
How could you?

Well, I was eighteen and still talking to myself.
Where were you? Where'd you go?
Daddy can't you tell?

I'm not trying to fake it
And I ain't the one to blame.
There's no one home
In my house of pain
I didn't write these pages
And my script's been rearranged.
No, there's no one home
In my house of pain

(REPEAT)

And I'm alone again.

(Spoken): Well, if I learned anything from this...it's how to live on my own.

No no no!--The Plan is that we sweep St. Louis, thus luring fans back into the foolish belief that we can STILL make the playoffs this year.

The rest of the WC contenders will continue to play mediocre baseball, letting us up off the mat. THEN we climb to the top of the ropes, beat our chests, and throw ourselves onto the cold, concrete floor littered with popcorn and spilt soda to finish the season with a thud.

Losing the rest of our games isn't nearly painful enough for fans of this team. We have to get back in it for it to be truly excrutiating.

Contrasting a team with another that was uniquely positioned in history to get a free pass on losing, who is forty years removed from any disappointment that they may have caused, is more than a bit of an unfair contest.

MFS62
Sep 16 2005 08:18 AM

Why was it unfair?
The topic is pain.
Pain is personal.
I used the '62 team as an internal measuring point against which I compared my feelings about the degree of pain I associate with the current team.

I saw the '62 Mets, so it is my perrogative.

What qualifies you to tell me how I should measure my own pain?
Or what metaphor I should use to describe it?
Are you a certified pain therapist?
Or a Psychologist?
Or a Psychiatrist?

I see 62's point, but I disagree that this team isn't lovable. It's another post, but I do love these guys -- Reyes, Wright, Floyd, Pedro, a handful of others. I know they're not caricatures the way the '62 team was, but I think they're more lovable than this club has been in recent years.

Sep 16 2005 08:28 AM

You make a good point wolf. Like the '62 team, this team has individuals that you (and I ) can "love". And it certainly is more loveable then in recent years. But that '62 Mets were characterized, as a team, as loveable bumblers. I wouldn't say that about this group as a whole.

]The topic is pain.

I thought it was loveability.

]Pain is personal.

Then why air it?

]I used the '62 team as an internal measuring point against which I compared my feelings about the degree of pain I associate with the current team.

Which I see as obviously unfair comparison to measure any team against whatsoever. It's a cheap shot and you know it.

]I saw the '62 Mets, so it is my perrogative.

And I read your post, and it's my perogative to respond.

]What qualifies you to tell me how I should measure my own pain?

I didn't

]Or what metaphor I should use to describe it?

You didn't really use a metaphor. A metaphor would have changed the terms. Another baseball team is more of a literal comparison.

]Are you a certified pain therapist? Or a Psychologist?
Or a Psychiatrist?

These are irrelevant. And no, I'm not inside your head either.

Listen, you don't want responses, don't post. You don't want frustrated responses, don't take cheap shots.

If this team were made of Dudley-more types with Ogee voices, they would still lose the comparison.

Sorry, nonetheless that I chose to respond at all. Post to your heart's content and I'll get over myself.

No you haven't;
here are the run deficits for our losses in the 4-15 streak:

1, 3, 6, 2, 2, 1, 2, 2, 1, 5, 1, 2, 2, 3, 1

The wins were, of course, by a more comfortable 2, 6, 5 & 4 runs.

Even reasonable luck could have turned that stretch into a much less embarrasing 7-12 instead and a couple hits here and there (and a few not here & there) and it could be even better.
