Rooting for Matsui. So far, though, it seems every two- or three-hit game of his has been accompanied by a boner.

Sep 08 2005 07:59 AM

I thought you loved Wright that way, not Matsui.

JD is Durham. My man-crush is still on Piazza. (And Elster, of course).

I'm giving Matsui six points for every game the rest of the season, just so we can look back in a few years and say something like "How the hell was Matsui the third-most productive Met in 2005?!?"

As we'll see, Glavine responded quite well, but that's not yet included in the tally. Meanwhile, Floyd's been hot again lately. The next time we see totals, will Wright still be on top of the season standings?

Stay tuned.

]Can Glavine hang on and become the first pitcher to
be Schaefer Mets Player of the Month?

If he does, it'll be a nice commentary on how well the Mets have hit this month. Years from now they'll be looking back and say, "It's a testament to how badly the Mets hit in the final month of 2005 that the CPF Schaefer player of the month award was given to a pitcher."

Wow, I guess he has.

For Player of the Year, in addition to Floyd and Wright, only Reyes, Beltran, and Piazza still have a mathematical chance.

Most likely. But Beltran can still put up three 6's.

Reyes could still pass Pedro for third. Pedro very very foolish taking those last two starts off.

So... um... when do we start debating the Schaefer totals for entry into our rankings?

Benjamin Grimm
Oct 02 2005 06:24 PM

Final totals will be announced on Wednesday.

Benjamin Grimm
Oct 03 2005 02:08 PM

I won't update the season totals just yet; instead I'll wait for the last two games to be tallied.

Tom Glavine does indeed become the first pitcher to win the Schaefer Mets Player of the Month award. (Previous winners: April, Cliff Floyd; May, Mike Cameron; June, Cliff Floyd; July, David Wright; August, Jose Reyes.)

We've traditionally had a sub-category Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Month. Glavine, obviously, wins that as well. The Schaefer Mets Non-Pitcher of the Month, if such a thing should exist, would be Carlos Beltran. Carlos' only Schaefer award for 2005 is a rather dubious one.

Previous pitchers of the month have always been either Pedro Martinez or Tom Glavine.

Should the September totals also include October? They could be called September and October totals.

Benjamin Grimm
Oct 03 2005 02:18 PM

Nah. I thought of it, but September is September.

Maybe next year the Mets will play a bunch of October games, and we can have an October winner, too.

Valadius
Oct 03 2005 02:25 PM

That makes sense. Quite a good deal of sense, actually.

Now that we've finished this season, and will have some time on our hands come winter, maybe we ought to go through the All-Time Mets Rankings all over again and Schaefer-ize them.

I'm not sure what that means. If you're thinking we should do POTG voting on every game from 1962 through 2004, then count me out!

Valadius
Oct 03 2005 02:45 PM

It would be a massive project, to be sure, but it would at least offer a far more comprehensive ranking system and would allow our Schaefer totals from this year to fully integrate with the rest of Mets history. We could do them quite quickly if we set our minds to it.

So someone busts it up for two games and gets declared a Schaefer PotM? Doesn't seem fair to the guy who has a great 28 games in April or whatever.

If postseason series happen, it could be broken up by series. So after we paste the Dodgers next year and David Wright hits .412 with 4 homers and 15 RBI, he could be Schaefer 2006 NLDS Player of the Series
or Schafer Player of the 2006 NLDS.

No way. All the intangibles and defensive statisics are lost doing it that way, because you're not going to know those things from looking at a box score. IMO, the way these guys have done each year is as close to fully comprehensive as you're going to get. If you're really into it, I would suggest you go ahead and give Schaefer points for each game in one year, and see how your totals match up to the CPF rankings for that year. I'm guessing they'll be pretty close. I figure you'll get through about two months of games before becoming exhausted and calling it quits.

Besides, the Schaefer system has some flaws as currently implemented, and my final rankings for 2005 will not be a mirror of the Schaefer results.
