Keith’s Mustache

It wasn't very large
It was just enough to coat the lip
And the corners of his mouth
It was a shade of black
He got from the back
Of a tiny little can
With a sign on the front that said
"Just for Men"
And it covered his cigar
Sending smoke signals from a Met All-Star

And I’d stare at Keith’s mustache
The girls were screamin’
“He’s so damn hot!”
He was leadin’ the whole Met team
In ’83, and sometimes he
Did crosswords all day long
Gave great quotes too, he was so cool
And very masculine
And all I wanted was a ‘stache like that

I thought he was pretty good
They talked about keepin' the team together
And I figured that they should
'Cause about this time they were gettin' some guys
Who could really swing the wood
Fans’d come from all over n' dance around like...

LET’S-GO, LET’S-GO-METS!
LET’S-GO, LET’S-GO-METS!

And Keith played such an awesome game
Had some Gold Gloves won and a couple of years
He could go to the Hall of Fame
With his facial hair
And his clubhouse chair
And a book about the Civil War
He could score with Elaine in a West Side bar

ONE TWO THREE FOUR!
CAN I GROW MY WHISKERS MORE?

People seemed to love our team
They got up and danced and made a lotta noise
But it wasn't 'fore very long
We started struggling and we couldn’t repeat
Then in eighty eight
We won once again but this was when
The Dodgers did us in
These good times became somethin'
That were no longer happenin’
So the team broke up
And it looks like
Keith is off to Cleveland...

I guess you only get one chance in life
To grow an awesome mustache...

(trim it down!)
(trim it DOWN!)

Well the years went rollin' by
And Keith retired, wrote a book
And made some ads with Clyde
Where Graybeard got rejected and
He’s now on SNY
And he’s still got that pushbroom thing
With Gary and with Ron
And all of a sudden I thought the time
Had come for me to try
To grow my whiskers like Keith’s mustache
And if I am not wrong
You will soon be lovin’ me too...

Yeah, the years go rollin by…

There seems to be multiple versions of this tune, tho my song is based on the version heard here:

(edit -- so delayed the vid was removed!) Here's a poor substitute:

TEDDY MARTINEZ
(An Ode to Non-Starters)

Ahh ... they are u-til-i-ty players
Ahh ... ten-u-ous as roster stayers

Teddy Martinez
Picks up a glove
To play short
Or wherever's there's need

He has some speed

Pays close attention
Plays now and then
And again he will ride
The Met pine

Biding his time

They're u-til-ity players
They don't get much chance
Rarely in the lineup
Never to advance

Hot Rod Ka-ne-ehl
He would get nicked
With a pitch
At Casey's behest

Withstood the test

Like Joe McEwing
Doing enough
To maintain
His Super sub role

The one Woodward stole

Dee-fensive replacements
Who bunt or might pinch-run
Used in case of inj'ry
Or a long slump by someone

Ahh ... they are cursed as vers-a-ti-le
Àhh ... la Bogar and Bobby Pfeil

Teddy Martinez
Fills in in left
And in right
And sometimes at third

A real Relaford

Yet after a while
Swapped to the Cards
For Jack Heidemann
And for Mike Vail

Please forward Ted's mail

Scrubeen'es like Martinez
They'll do anything
Miller, Bailor, Newhan...
Anticipating spring

Hard.

Yeah, hard. JCL picked a more obscure and more difficult song to use so I went that way, plus he stuck to his subject more.

Tremendous. Went with G's Beatles ode giving points for quantity of players referenced.

Great stuff by both competitors!

Wowee-wee-wow.

Teddy Martinez-as-EveryMet mirroring Eleanor-Rigby-as-EveryWoman tipped the scales for me... who put that poignance in my parody contest?

Poignant means pregnant with feeling.
And since the ode to Keith left me feeling only five months poignant, the Teddy parody did it for me.

These are both awesome. That Keith's stache writing was especially brilliant. My vote narrowly went to JCL.

TIME!

The rules-mandated 48 hours have passed since this round began and I do believe I've hung on, once more, by the skin of my 17-seed teeth. I'm not surprised it was close given the absolutely splendid competition; I'm also not waiting one more minute than legally necessary to watch yet another of my once-comfortable leads almost completely melt like MacArthur Park did in the rain, all its sweet green icing flowing down, et al.

Teddy 12
Keith 10

Cap tip to JCL for another in a series of gripping parody battles. Looking forward to seeing Soup or Seo in the finals.

Wonderful parody, G. A very well deserved victory.

I was wondering why there was no new entry over at Faith & Fear , G-Fafif has been sitting around all morning clock watching.

My slowness on the blog today owes more to persistent queasiness the likes I haven't felt since the last time Jerry signaled for the bullpen door to open than parody fever. But fever is definitely a part of the delay.

Feel better G. And congratulations.

It was a battle of greatness!

Thanks TMF. I've been in four battles of greatness to date and my reward will be holding up end of a fifth.

Yes, congrats. There is no shame in having gone down to Eleanor Rigby or Teddy Martinez.

I thought I had a good first verse but didn't go anywhere afterward. I had a story-song with no story, I sorta knew that would be my downfall.

Congrats!

Thank you, sir. Zappa never had it so good.
