w/Francesa

- trying different lineups to "get guys going". Not necessarily married to any of these changes yet.

- prefers an extra bat as opposed to a 12th pitcher

- not concerned about the lack of LHPs in the pen since the late-inning/closer types are, virtually by definition, cross-over guys who shouldn't need constant matchup shuffling.

I like it, especially the last note...

- 5th starter will be a question to be answered in ST.
Doesn't feel pressured to bring along a younger guy there since most of the rest of the staff is already young.

- too early to get a read on Fartinez. Needs to stay healthy and get more reps at minors

- thinks Murphy will eventually hit for more power

Omar was on XM's baseball station this morning. When asked about Reyes hitting third he chuckled and then indicated that he feels Manuel is mostly just trying some things out here in February.

He also revealed that in all of his conversations with Scott Boras this winter regarding Derek Lowe and Ollie that Manny's name did not come up even once in conversation. I found that interesting.

] WFAN's Mike Francesa is in Port St. Lucie today and Friday, but word is that neither David Wright nor Ryan Church will appear as guests. Actually, there may not be any face-to-face interviews since Francesa will remain upstairs in the stadium and chat with the players by phone or equivalent technology.

Supposedly Wright is pissed at him because Francesa harshly criticized him during the stretch run last year.

Church's issue is that Francesa has constantly reported that Church is very unhappy in New York. Francesa says he got this information from a very reliable source. Church has denied that from the first day Francesa reported it.

The best reason for not talking to him is that he's an idiot.

There is that.

The furor over Jerry's lineup experimentation is about the dumbest stuff I've heard in months (granted, I don't listen to the Fan in non-baseball season) but Omar joining in makes me want to tie his shoes together or something.

1) Lineup order barely registers as a meaningful strategy as long as the players seem OK with it

2) Moving Castillo up and Reyes down makes perfect sense when the goal is to exploit Castillo's strength at getting on base and Reyes' skill at hitting a shitload of extra-base hits. Not exploring this is the supid thing.

I've always wondered whether radio-show hosts were really as stupid as they come across, or if they realize that smart radio show hosts would get no ratings so they create this persona.

But Mike Francesa is the smartest person he knows.

In regards to the lineup Manuel said that when all is said and done Reyes may well be hitting number 1...

Manuel

"That's very possible," Manuel said. "Whatever we feel will fit to win. All we're doing is creating options."

Fron the thread title I thought this was about Jerry Seinfeld. He had been calling to speak to Steve Somers for many years. He just calls himself "Jerry from Queens" and is very knowledgeable.

I don't like Francessa.

We now return control of this thread back to the original topic.

1) I hope Jerry has full autonomy to decide the lineup on his own

2) I hope he decides to put Castillo up top

The Francesa/Wright controversy (if there is one) most likely stems from the fact that Mike is one of the myriad of media folk who believe the clutch fairy, the theory that all players can be divided into either the clutch or unclutch variety and Wright's RISP numbers last year puts him in the UN category and therefore the Mets need players who are or they won't win.
If that is indeed what Wright is mad at I can't really blame him although, in the long run, he'd be better off ignoring it.

could Fatty be more passive aggressive? he kept saying how Reyes was gonna hit 80 homers and that the Mets got 450 hits in the game (yesterday).

and keep mentioning the Yankees when you talk to the Mets players. I'm sure when he goes to Yankee Spring training he'll ask them about the Mets.

and the Mets can't speak good English, "let's face it, that's a problem for the Mets".

Is there another NY-centric sports talk on the internet? please let me know.

Beltran on FAN re his lineup slot: "I don't care where I hit brother"

soupcan

I was listening to Francesa a little while ago and it turned out that Wright ultimately did not go on the air with him today.

One guy calls in to debate Wright's real or imagined un-clutchityness and brings up 2-3 specific instances where Wright did in fact get important hits in big spots late in a game and season. Francesa basically dismissed him.

A lady calls in saying that Wright early in his career stated that he would love to pattern himself after Jeter and that he has failed miserably in that attempt. Not because of his lack of clutch, but because he refused to acknowledge that Francesa's critiques were not personal! Of course Francesa loved this and went on to say that the Wright-not-talking-to-him story had gotten way out of hand and everybody should just let it go.

He then proceeds - immediately after making that last statement mind you - to recap the entire 'controversy'.

Then - and this part made me laugh - he says that last year after Wright got miffed at him, Jay Horowitz tried to play peacemaker and came to Francesa and told him that he would get Wright on the air with him. Francesa said fine. But then Horowitz came back to him and told him that 'Wright said no'. Yesterday, Horowitz did the same thing, came to Francesa and told him that he would try to get Wright for him. Again Wright said no.

Francesa said 'that was two times. There won't be a third.'

If you didn't think that Francesa was an asshole before...

Radio/TV hosts (not just the likes of Francesa-Russo but their huge egos made them prime candidates) L-O-V-E saying how 'X' is avoiding them, turning any turn-down into a badge of honor: "Oh that guy wants no part of THIS show" .

I heard about 5 minutes this afternoon and he was going on about the same clutch/not factor I was talking about above and I just didn't have the stomach.

Francesa is a loud, fat, obnoxious idiot. Wright is a perenial MVP contender. End of conversation.

Francesa wouldn't even go to the field or clubhouse for the interviews--he sat in the pressbox and wanted to conduct the interviews over the phone.

FAN management blew it when they let Russo go and kept Francesa. Russo knows how to run a talk show, Francesa does not.

Wouldn't that make Francesca a hermaphrodite? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

No. I think there is something wrong with that. I was thinking of the Seinfeld line that applied to gays, but not necessarily hermaphrodites.

Something about the image of him going down to friggin' Mets camp and chatting with players only via phone from a confined booth, fiddling his Diet Coke-filled gunt, seems very fitting.

As for Mike and the Mad Dog, they're both idiots, but only Mike is contemptible.

I find Derek or Jeter much more offensive and Fman is just funny.

I like it, it's worthy of a cartoon. Alas I have no artistic talents, aside from spinning a tapestry of profanity and juvenile laughs.

Now is the "gunt" refer to his gut or his cunt? Or is it that fat roll above the nethers that some heftier folks have?

I've also heard that referred to as the FUPA (Fat Upper Pubic Area), pronounced "foo-pah", and the AIF (Ass-in-front) which rhymes with "chafe." (ironically)
