Planning a trip to see the Mets in Cincinnati...anyone who's been there have any specific thoughts/advice on things to not miss or things to avoid?

Haven't been there, but check out the Reds HOF and museum.

Didn't MGIM end his Mets losing streak in Cincy last season? I vaguely remember a discussion about Skyline Chili on this forum last season.

themetfairy
Mar 01 2009 04:27 PM

We were there in 2003. It's a nice place, but it suffered from comparison because the night before we made it to Cincy we saw a game at PNC in Pittsburgh. I remember $2.50 grilled cheese sandwiches at the Great American Ballpark, which the kids enjoyed. And the hot dogs with chili are worth a try.

Not too much about Cincinnati stands out in my memory, other than it's very hilly (I ran a 4 miler there July 4th, which was brutal). There are several hotels downtown within walking distance of the stadium, which is nice. But aside from hanging out with friends, I can't think of anything memorable that we did there.

Mmmm, Skyline Chili.

In fact, Great American Ballpark will always hold a special place in my heart for being the site of the Streak of Shame's demise.

It's a nice park, and you'll enjoy it.

Parking isn't an issue. There are plenty of lots around the stadium, and if you drive around downtown you'll see many. Get more than a couple blocks from the stadium and the prices drop.

Get there early if you can, because there is much to see. As Steve said, the Hall of Fame and museum is just outstanding. All kinds of interactive things to do. You could spend half the day there, even if you're not a huge Reds fan.

There are all kinds of things to do on a plaza beyond the first base side. There's a band stand, interactive activities, food court.

You can't go wrong with the Montgomery Inn stand, with ribs and pulled pork. Get extra sauce to dip the fries and chips.

Skyline is, well, and acquired taste. Think White Castle, but with chili and spaghetti.

The Reds do a great job recognizing the team's history. Walk around the concourse and look for the mosaics, one of the first Reds team and another of the Big Red Machine. You'll also see a ring of quotes, including one from Seaver.

After the game, you can walk across the bridge into Kentucky, and there's a festival marketplace type of place with clubs. Near the stadium there's a full Montgomery Inn restaurant, full of memorabilia.

Enjoy!

I'd be outraged if I went to the Reds ballpark and didn't see a 40 foot high statue of Jackie Robinson. They do have a Jackie Robinson statue? Yes?

Stubhub's not terrible, and since they work with MLB, pickup's a lot easier than other e-vendors if you're buying on day-of-game or shortly before.

That said, E-Bay's been dirt-cheap this year. I've picked up 5 games' (2 seats per) worth of seats on E-Bay-- all infield promenade-- for a shade over 200 total. Average cost-- a little over 20 a seat-- is actually below box office rates (even further below once you include the per-game charges tacked on by Team Citifield).

As long as you're not looking for stuff like Yanks-Mets or Opening Day seats, there still plenty of reasonable options on the auction "floor".

My friend that came to the game in May with me had a great time. The trip to Shea was the first MLB game he had attended. With that one visit, he went from having only a casual interest in MLB, to being a fan that checks the sports page for Mets game results and boxscores. He told me this morning at church, that he has been watching some of the WBC games on ESPN because several of the Mets were playing. He wanted to know when we could head back to New York to take in a game at Citi Field this season.

I guess I will definitely have to look at getting tickets for a Saturday or Sunday game this summer. Hopefully, the two of us can get together for lunch in the near future and pick a possible date for a trip before single game tickets become too scarce.

Promenade row 11 between home and third for $24/ticket. I think it is slightly higher than face.

Going off-Mets-site gives you more flexibility in choosing your section/price.

Enjoyed a Cheese Coney at Great American Ball Park in July 2003. Alas, I was still feeling it in August 2003. (No kidding.)

My favorite aspect of GABP was the view beyond the river. It's Kentucky -- how often do you get to sit in one state at a ballgame and stare out at another state?

Hmmm....

If you climb as high as you can, can you see New Jersey from Citizens Bank Park?

And on a clear day, with binoculars, can you see Connecticut from either Shea (or Citi, grrrr) or Yankee Stadium?

Those are the only other parks I can think of offhand that are close to a state line.

I dug walking across the bridge from Ohio to Kentucky on that trip, just like I dig a certain corporate headquarters I've visited that is about six inches inside the Connecticut border from New York. Whenever I go there, I do a Frank Burns "I can step in, I can step out" kind of thing.

I am wondering when single game tickets for the summer will go on sale. What are they waiting for?

The StubHub site is good in that they have tickets for many games later in the season (season/package ticket holders selling off part of their tickets for games they cannot attend). The problem is the markup and fees compared to buying them direct from the Mets' web site is significant... say, 25-30% higher than the face value of the tickets.

They want people to buy the April and May seats that are unsold.

StubHub sucks. They take a 15% fee from the seller's share, plus add a 10% fee to the buyer's price.

I have a pair of extra tickets to the June 9 game against the Phillies. Face is $30 each. (I think I mentioned this before, but they are available at $5 off face as a CPF discount if anyone here wants 'em).

Anyway, if I list them on Stubhub, I have to price them at $36 each to break even. If somebody buys them, they'll have to pay $79.20 plus shipping fees. What a rip-off.

For less-desirable dates-- I've been hunting for Mondays and Tuesdays mostly, since that's when my fiancee/game partner is free-- E-Bay has worked swimmingly.

I've gotten 5 sets of Promenade Infield tickets for just about $200 (sub-Stubhub prices)-- it's been like a self-created mini-plan.

Ironically, for the game in late May I was looking at, all of the better seats in the upper deck, the $30 ones, have already sold out, where there are still tons of $120 seats available further down.

No thanks. I shall wait for summer tickets and continue to troll eBay. I am looking at one of the 4 PM game of the week Saturday matinees, maybe June 20 vs. the Rays.

Booooooooooooooooo! I'm now 0-2 this season. 0-3 if you count the exhibition game against the Red Sox.

Oh - one thing to add - At Citi Field if you get there early enough for batting practice you are allowed to walk down to the front rows in left, center and right fields. A good spot to fight for batting practice homeruns and banter with the players.

Yesterday I was out there with my kids and the balls were routinely hitting the wall. Every 3 or so times that a guy would catch or retrieve a ball he'd throw it up to the stands. My kids were having no luck but a security guard gave a bp hr that landed out of reach of the fans to my daughter.

I noticed a Nats coach with 'LISTACH' stitched on his back in the outfield with a fungo bat generally ignoring everyone yelling at him for balls. I told my son to try yelling 'Hey Pat' and see if that worked. He did, Listach turned and my blue-eyed, 12 year-old held up his glove and flashed his braces. Listach flipped him a ball.

Dad's awesome.

By the way - the bp balls have a stamp on them that says 'PRACTICE' underneath the mlb logo. Never seen that before. Assuming its new and used as a way to deter counterfeiting memorabilia.

I bought four tickets to the April 16 game on StubHub. I paid $24 per ticket, plus I think additional charges brought it up to $107 total. When I got the tickets, I saw they were listed as $30 tickets. So I saved money going through StubHub. Maybe I am the exception to the rule though.

Hey I'm Scott Strickland, Every time I hear his name I think of this game, which fits in this thread as well as any.

In a game against the Expos on April 13, 2002 (thanks, UMDB), probably in the seventh inning, Edgardo Alfonzo hit a screaming foul line drive into the Loge. Right at me. I had it all the way until I didn't, and in about five seconds my left hand was visibly swelling. Turns out I broke two bones in my left pinky. I hung in there until I couldn't stop my hand from twitching, and watched Strickland give up the go-ahead run in the 11th on the TV in the LIJ emergency room waiting area.

And, since everyone asks, I didn't get the ball.

Benjamin Grimm
May 08 2009 06:21 PM

I once had seats in the front row right above the area where the left field auxiliary scoreboards was. (You know, by the Newsday sign.) Mike Fitzgerald hit a ball that slammed into the wall right below me. I was reaching down to try to catch it with my bare hand, but at the last second I realized that the ball would smash my hand against the wall, so I jerked my hand away. I don't know if the ball would have actually hit my hand, but I'm glad I pulled away.

Swan Swan H
May 08 2009 07:39 PM

Good call. History has proven that the ball is harder than our bones, yet some choose wisely (you) and some end up in a splint for six weeks and have a finger that points about 30 degrees NNW from the rest of his hand (moi).

But for me, technically, I could leave work after lunch and be at the park in time for the first pitch. But I wouldn't get home until 5 AM, and my wife would have no one at home to help with the kids at dinner and bedtime, and I'd have to take time off from work, and blah blah blah.

I thought the standard way to get to the East Coast from Australia was via Los Angeles.

Is Europe quicker? About the same? Or are you going through Europe because you're planning to stop there too?

Any CPF'ers in Pittsburgh?

I am seriously considering taking a half day on Wednesday and driving Fboy and I out there for the series finale. It's only a five hour trip from the Cuse and he can sleep on the way home...

Plus it looks like plenty of good seats available.

I actually made my first visit to Citi Field this past Sunday. I had gone back and forth about it, fearing bad weather and not liking the ticket prices I was seeing. But we got last minute tickets on StubHub at a good price: $25 per seat for Promenade tickets above the infield. (Section 509, for those of you who already know Citi Field.)

Nice place. There's an outdoor food court on the roof of the rotunda. My son and I got turkey and mozzarella heroes from Mama's of Corona. (I love being in New York and not having to call them "hoagies!")

The business about being able to watch the game while you're at the concession stand wasn't as good as advertised. (Unless you count the SNY feed playing on the TV monitors.) For some strange reason, you can't buy ice cream on the 300 level. It's only (at least as far as I could tell) on Field Level, where the lines were ridiculous, or on 400, where only the prices are ridiculous.

We posed for pictures in front of the Shea apple. That's also where the "flags" for the Mets past titles (including the NLCS losses) are displayed. They look like they're printed on bent cardboard. There's an unsightly crease about two thirds of the way down each of the flags. It's like the cardboard signs got accidentally folded at some point. I'm sure they're on corrugated steel or something instead of cardboard, but geez, they sure don't look too good from close up.

We entered through the Jackie Robinson rotunda. I felt like I was in a famous place, because I had seen the sketches, and later, the photos, for so long, but I wasn't at all tempted to linger. I caught the silly blue 42 out of the corner of my eye. My daughter wants to check it out next time we go, so I'm sure we will.

The kids participated in the Mr. Met Dash after the game, so we got to re-enter the stadium through the bullpen gate and walked past the actual bullpens as we went out onto the field. They then had us exit through a tunnel on the third base side. (I think that's the tunnel from whence umpires emerge twirling their fingers after home runs.)

Going to see a batch of mini-MFYs, the Charleston Riverdogs, nip at the heels of the Rome Braves on Monday. We're down in SC for a family thing from tomorrow thru Tuesday and thought we'd take in a game as part of the local color. My in-laws have gone to a number of their games and say the park is pretty nice.

Hopefully we'll get to see the freak show known as Pat Venditte, the ambidextrous reliever that has been written about quite a bit lately, here and elsewhere. Otherwise all we can really hope for is to see a bunch of future storm troopers, both home and away, getting their careers cruelly cut short.

Plenty of good seats available for Yanks-Mets ... at a price

BY NEIL BEST | neil.best@newsday.com

A year ago, it would have sounded absurd: blocks of tickets to the first Subway Series at new Yankee Stadium, available at face value on the Yankees' Web site, a mere five days in advance.

But there they were as of Monday afternoon, and plenty of them.

Feel like taking nine very, very good friends to Friday night's game against the Mets? The tickets were yours - 10 in Section 24B, Row 7 for a mere $900 apiece, plus a $23.45 "convenience charge.''

Ten in 24B also turned up at $900 per for Sunday. How about 10 in Section 28 at $525 apiece for Saturday?

All three games offered groups of 10 seats at $375 per ticket, plus $12.45 for "convenience.''

Seats at cheaper levels were more difficult to find on the Yankees' site, but as always, StubHub and other secondary outlets had plenty of availability. Still, below-face-value bargains were far fewer than for most games this season.

On StubHub, which has a partnership with the Yankees, tickets for Sunday in Section 24B, Row 6 were going for $850, plus the site's $85 fee. That made the total price almost identical to what the Yankees are charging for that section.

Stubhub taking the convenience charge to the extreme.

I'd say the convenience charge is awfully similar to the "taking it in the pooper" charge. Which is decidedly less convenient (unless you're into that sort of thing, and NTTAWWT).

Sorry no in-depth review... busy all week, then... well... not so much in the mood for an in-depth assessment.

1) Get there WAY early if you're checking Monument Park-- I got in two hours before gametime, and only barely got in.

2) Do enter through the Great Hall at Gate 6 (River and 161st, near the subway)-- it's worth seeing (if only to disdain). Resist the urge to purchase Acela tickets and/or apply for a loan. Once in, ask one of the folks with the "Ask Me" cardboard circles if you can get a Fan Guide-- much more useful in navigating the place, which is plenty recursive/deja-vu inducing, than anything I've seen online.

3) I have no interest in seeing those lurid this-is-how-I-committed-the-murder MSNBC specials, nor in seeing what a Nazi WWII museum would have been like. Similarly, I skipped the Yankee Museum.

4) If you're a meat-eater, you need one of the Lobel's steak sandwiches before you head up to your seats (Field Level, past the food court in LF)... it's dry-aged beef on a asiago-cheese accented roll, with olive tapenade and/or garlicky horseradish sides. It's $15. It's worth a try (if only one, split three ways). You can also gawk at the swells in the glassfront Legends Lounge-- we made faces at a dyspeptic-looking Tommy Lasorda when we went.

If you're feeling slightly little more downmarket, Carl's Philly Steaks (Field 107) are decent, and there's a wide range of mediocre stuff at the food court near Lobel's.

5) Beers selection is generally limited, unless you're hitting Beers of the World ("Main" Level at 3rd base, Grandstand just left of home plate and near 1st), where you can pay 11 bucks for a piss-poor Guinness pour. Prost!

I can't stand watching Carlin and Ojeda . I think Ojeda can get better with time but as an expert you need to do better than pull out the old " gut feeling" when asked if he like Manuel would have pulled the starter .

When asked a general question about "how Jerry's doing," he proceeded to praise to the high heavens Jerry's "go-with-gut" approach... and then took a good minute going off on the by-the-book approach, which he proceeded to equate with "going by stats and figures." He continued, suggesting that the BTB approach was a somewhat cowardly way to go... going so far as to hint that stats and figures are entirely useless themselves. As I said, my exposure to Lefty has been somewhat limited, but this was by far the most passionate I've ever seen him about something.

I am startled and confused to find that I feel the same way as you do about Maz, Irish.

[quote="GWreck"]No, always wanted to. Have heard they run it kinda-cheesy though.

Kinda. Kranepool and Harrelson showed, and, owing to the opponent, the entire thing had more '69 to it than a '70s bathhouse (trivia contests, eg). Also, a lotta free shirts. And visors. And movie tickets. (AL games are rather lengthy.)

The theater's still a beaut, though.

That's the earliest you can get in. And it should give you enough time to get a feel for the place.

If your heart is set on the Shake Shack, go right there as soon as you get in. The lines for that concession are insane. If you don't care about that particular concession, then the lines should be fairly reasonable. One note - regular concession stands sell Carvel, so don't stand in a long line at the Carvel concession unnecessarily.

Make sure you visit the Bullpen Gate area (there are stairwells on either side of the bridge in the outfield) so you can take pix with the old Home Run Apple from Shea.

I'll be there tonight, with Vic jr. We'll try to avoid our crappy seats in LF upper deck for as long as possible. We'll try and stake out seats in the CF bleachers, near the concessions. He's looking forward to seeing Pujols, who is carrying my son's fantasy team to a 35 point lead.

1 1/2-2 hours before an evening game should give you plenty of stumble-around time. Going counter-clockwise from the Rotunda at Field Level gives you a nice, leisurely look-see there-- the Daruma/Mama's/old-timey gear shop in RF, Catch of the Day, along with the bridge/scoreboard/bullpens/Home Run Apple in Right-Center, and the Kids' Area/Food Court in Center.

Shake Shack is about 15 minutes of line time. If you don't plan to be back for a while, it's worth it. (Grab a beer/soda and some box fries to share before getting in line, and it flies by.)

The wiffle-ball field is kinda fun-- it's out past the Food Court, in the back corner of the Kids Area.

My friend has never been to NYC other than our trip to Shea last summer. Any suggestions as to where we might grab something to eat or have a beer or two?

Sunday we plan to meet up with KC & KB for some tailgating before the game. I hope to renew old acquaintances and hopefully make a few new ones. We'll be in Promenade Section 426 Row 4 for the game. Of course, we'll likely wander around at some point since it is our first time at CitiField.

Funny story: At some game in June (I think it was vs. Tampa) there was this YLDB sitting in that exact row who was trying to antagonize the crowd, turning around to the section and pointing at his Alex Rodriguez jersey t-shirt, etc.

I figured that this was the exact moment I'd been waiting for to test out the "fan assistance" hotline and sent them a text message about the guy pointing out that his language was "inappropriate." Two minutes later, there were no fewer than four security guys, plus a supervisor (must've been a slow night) telling this guy to keep his yap shut for the rest of the game or they were going to ask him to leave.

Took the words out of my mouth.

The Big Apple's the area surrounding the homer bowl... and right by the CF food court for Shake Shack, BBQ and dippin' fries runs and fancy beerin'. I'm not sure there's a finer place in the park to spend a late-summer sunset happy hour just before gametime.
