And, in a semi-related story, Denver's 'Rocky Mountain News' will cease publication as of tomorrow.

Well, congratulations to them for killing themselves.

Sad news from Denver.

As for Newsday, I guess I'll soon delete my bookmark to their Mets page.

They seriously think that people will pay for Newsday online...no matter how they rebrand it I just can't see me paying to read Wally and co.

I like David Lennon's blog but it's no better than the one Adam Rubin writes for the Daily News and I'd have no problem dropping it like a bad habit.

I heard on the radio today that the San Francisco and Hartford papers are also in financial trouble.

But, Newsday will charge for readin it on-line but the New York Times doesn't. What's wrong with this picture.

Yes, the SF Chronicle--like much of the rest of hte Golden State-- is in deep distress.

NY Times is apparently considering going back to a paid model. I think newspapers are kind of pissed off at sites like Google News. Papers hire reporters, do all the work and then Google gloms their stuff.

I don't see Google News as a problem at all. There are days when I visit
25 newspapers sites because Google News makes it easier. They don't
glom anything really, they have a sentence and a link nicely placed under
a category of interest.

On the plus side, this means that Wally Matthews is one step closer to unemployment.

Sadly, it will be true for many others.

I check ESPN.com alot less now (ever since they turned half the site into pay-to-read). Now I'm sure ESPN can survive that way (most of their revenue is TV anyway), but Newsday? someone oughta tell them that The Daily News and NY Post provide equal or better sports coverage for free and theres nothing special about their news coverage either.
I'm guessing this is a terrible move for them.

I'm kind of disappointed that the RMN wasn't able to stay ahead of the times enough to at least try switching to an online-only model.
