Wonder if Billy Wagner is on hand to tell the Wolverines how to conduct themselves.

Well, um, the Wolverines are really tough, you know.

Extra whammy is that Fred Wilpon is a Wolverine alum, and was on hand to see Redding get his head handed to him.

And rooting for the Wolverines.

It's early yet; spring training is for pitchers. (He says optimistically.)

Keep hating our fifth-starter options, and all that hate's gonna burn you up, kid.

Our fifth starter candidates all suck.

Gotta love the NYPost inventing a story where none exists.

They start with a headline of: 5TH-STARTER FIASCO SPARKS PEDRO TALK
and then state a few sentences into the piece that no one on the Mets has expressed any interest in Pedro.

IOW, even though they're not talking about it the fact that we're talking about the fact that they're not talking about it means there's talk about it.

Edgy DC
Mar 09 2009 06:52 AM

And now you're talking about it. See? Talk has been spurred. Stirred. Um, sparked. There you go.

TheOldMole
Mar 09 2009 08:00 AM

It's relatively rare that your fifth starter is going to be your ace. On most teams he'll be not quite as good as your first four starters, and you may have to audition a few candidates even during the course of the season.

metsguyinmichigan
Mar 09 2009 08:42 AM

Plus, we generally don't need these guys for most of April because of the off-days. Let Neise get some starts with the Bisons, and Garcia and Livan stay behind in extended spring training. That gives all of them some more time to prove themselves.

Mar 09 2009 08:58 AM

I agree. If our biggest problem is who our fifth starter is then we're in pretty good shape. I think between Redding, Hernandez, Garcia and Niese somebody will break through by the time we need a fifth starter.

there's always last year's 5th starter out of camp. Figueroa. I pick him as the dark horse to win it again this year.

wbc stats so far: 2 2/3 innings 1k 3w 0hits.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Mar 09 2009 09:16 AM

Um, I'm a little more worried about the first 4 starters.

Maine -- I don't like to make too much of remarks to the press but his comments after his last outing were exactly what I didn't wanna hear. Really discouraged regarding his state of mind and CAHNfidence, and this after a really frustrating year with little progress.

Pelfrey -- He's missed a turn now with a leg strain. Doesn't seem serious but just the same I'd prefer he wasn't in pain.

Ollie -- Ollie. He looks like the most reliable so far, and he got beat up some in the WBC.

Johan -- Not worried about his ability or the schedule too much, but he is sorta stiff.

Redding is the only one of the #5 candidates who is on a guaranteed contract.
Yeah his pitching line looked like crap but it's also his first outing in a while following the off-season toe surgery (or whatever he had). He should still get regular turns and will probably have to pitch his way off that spot.

Most of Garcia's money is tied up in incentives - but if he doesn't get his velocity up it's never going to reach that point or maybe even opening day. As per the standard agreement they owe him about 1/6 of whatever is guaranteed if he's dropped by mid-March at some point or about 1/4 of that total if dropped by April 1st. And, despite my suspicions, I read where there is NOT some clause that dictates he be released if he isn't on the 25-man by a certain date.

Livan I don't think was in the plans for anything other than roster filler for a WBC-challenged spring training and a hail-Mary if all the others fell on their faces. If he's the guy it either means that he's pitching really well (not so far) or that things are going really wrong elsewhere.

Pedro to Mets: "Call me"

Newsday:
Pedro Martinez said Monday he'd like to be the Mets' fifth starter, but "I'm not going to go chasing the Mets. I'm not in that bad of shape." However, Martinez said he would love to pitch in Citi Field, which he called "the new Shea," making no secret that the Mets are on his wish list of teams. And he certainly knows they need pitching. "If they want a fifth starter, I've been there. I don't know how much they want me but I'm available," Martinez said. "That's all I can say. But at the same time, I'm available for every team out there." Martinez, who threw three scoreless innings against the Netherlands on Saturday, also said he's open to being a reliever, though it's not his preference.

He also said the other day that he wasn't going to stoop to a "Glavine contract", one where he signs for a small amount with incentives.

But, still, there appears to be no talk coming from Met camp.
Just from Pedro ... and the Post.

Pedro with 3 more scoreless innings as the DR gets bounced from the WBC.

6IP, 0ER, 1H, 0BB, 6K. Fastball apparently clocked at 92 mph.

Hmmm.

I notched 68 points and something like three dozen steals last weekend in a game of pickup Nerf basketball with my 5-year-old nephew. The Knicks-- even these Knicks-- have yet to send my 10-day contract offer.

Maybe you should lower your asking price and hint that you wouldn't mind a heavily incentive-based contract and would accept a bench role if neccesary.

Or you could offer to sign a $22 million deal, and they can just let you dress in street clothes and sit home. I understand they do that sometimes.

On a completely unrelated note... family men/women: which brand of light-truck is best in terms of room/comfort for "truck parties" with interns?

(The shocks on my Mini are being worn clean through at this point, and the lack of headroom has left many a tattoo-obscuring bump on the ol' noggin.)
