Perhaps You'd Like to Come Work for Me, Young Lady

The Mets have hired a new communications director named Danielle Sessa Parillo. Merely 34-ish and from Queens, I hope she can help marginalize Jay Horwitz, who has usually seemed nice enough, but also seems like the game has passed him by.

I check her track record at Bloomberg News (I wonder if John Stewart has ranted about her?) and she seems to have been notable for getting quotes out of the Wilpons and being willing to tell their side of the story.

This sort of comment got into a few articles this year, while other news sources speculated the economy and the Madoff scandal might force the team onto the block:

“Categorically, unequivocally, we are not selling, and we don’t have to sell,” he said.

I'm surprised you didn't mention her big wedding to Wayne. It was a big deal in LIC.

Uses a lot of exclamation points! For a reporter!

We met playing softball for Bloomberg. I was on the softball team for two years by the time Wayne joined. He chatted me up at the bar after the game (because that’s why you play softball really, to go drinking). I WAS surprised he had a girlfriend because he was such a flirt! He was always so chatty, too. And surprisingly, I liked the bald head. It worked. And he did lend me his socks. What he failed to mention was that I didn’t return them until the next season. They were washed though!

I need some pictures if I'm going to give you anything juvenile. Throw me a bone (figuratively speaking).

For a big shot young reporter, that's some poorly lit photograhy.

Somebody needs to introduce Danny and Wayne to Iubitul.

Danielle was the fourth member of my legendary (to me) partial season ticket quartet in 2001: me, Jason of FAFIF, Emily (Mrs. Jason) and Danielle. She and Jace worked together at the WSJ. In 2002, we split our seat, so to speak: I took Fridays, she took Tuesdays. Very big Mets fan, very fine reporter, very nice person. Happy she has landed in this role.

I was not. Jason and Emily were and they met...Danny Sessa, he of the Citi Field tours with Kevin Burkhardt. They're related through somebody's second marriage, half-siblings, something, I forget. Nice guy, I'm told.

Well this is all very encouraging.

Have her get to work on undermining that guy they brought in from the USTA and who is causing all those problems. I'm pretty sure he's the one in charge of uniform sleeve patches and Yankee-fan come-ons and stuff.

I hope she's pretty good at her job-- the team needs a better communicator, stat.

To paraphrase Caryn's review, I don't know how they weren't able to sell something as beautiful as CitiField to people who love the Mets and baseball.

Who's the USTA guy?

John Cougar Lunchbucket

I couldn't think of his name and now I have to try and find it... Hello, Newman.

Her boss, according to the press release.

Anyway, he's the guy I blame for the Mets' institutional deafness and relentless push to become artificial.

]Mets hire marketing executive David Newman 10/02/2005 5:35 PM ET New York Mets Media Relations Dept. FLUSHING, N.Y. -- The New York Mets today named David Newman to the newly-created position of Senior Vice President, Marketing and Communications. The announcement was made by Jeff Wilpon, the Mets' COO. Newman will join the Mets next month from the United States Tennis Association, where he was Managing Director, Marketing & Communications. He will report to Dave Howard, Executive Vice President, Business Operations. "We are excited to have David join us in this newly created position," said Howard. "David has extensive experience in marketing and business communications for first-rate sports and media entertainment organizations. His background will help our organization maximize the exciting opportunities presented by an up-and-coming team with a new regional sports network partner and a new stadium on the immediate horizon." Newman will be responsible for the strategic development and management of the Mets' branding, image-building, marketing and business communications initiatives to drive and support ticket sales, sponsorship activation, and fan value -- including advertising, promotion, advanced media, publishing, research, broadcasting, events, and in-game entertainment. "The Mets as a young and competitive club, and as a brand, are on the rise -- with a new network partner and stadium on deck," said Newman. "Joining the team at this juncture is truly a once-in-lifetime opportunity to play a role in diversifying and growing the connection of the Mets to current fans, new fans and partners." Newman was a key member of the US Open senior management team, leading the promotion and publicity effort that attracted 2.5 million fans to the National Tennis Center in the past four years, and earlier this month set a new attendance record as the highest annually attended event in sports. Newman brings to the Mets more than 20 years of sports and entertainment marketing experience. Before moving to the USTA, he spent nearly nine seasons with NFL Properties, rising to the position of Vice President, Marketing & Events, where he oversaw the League's integrated strategic marketing initiatives involving sponsors, licensees, and retailers. Prior to joining the NFL in 1992, Newman held several marketing positions in seven years at MTV. Newman also has held production, public relations and promotions positions with Madison Square Garden Network and Ogilvy & Mather. The Mets also announced today the promotions of two other senior executives. David Cohen has been promoted to Executive Vice President & General Counsel. "David plays a vital role in legal, human resources and corporate governance issues at the Mets and related companies and on the new stadium project," said Wilpon. "He is a key member of senior management." Cohen had been Senior Vice President & General Counsel and has been with the Mets organization since 1995. Paul Danforth has been promoted to Senior Vice President, Corporate Sales & Services. "Paul has proven himself to be an extraordinary corporate sales executive and an invaluable member of our team," said Howard, to whom Danforth has reported since 2001. Danforth had been Vice President, Corporate Sales & Services, and has also been with the organization since 1994. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.

MG nailed that point but good.

They have indeed been plagued by disconnect through the years. Long ago, Frank Cashen (from whom every GM since has been corporately descended) described with a sense of dismay that there were Mets fans and there were Mets customers. I don't think the organization, as a rule, has ever quite understood that while not every Mets fan is a Mets customer (that is, a ticket buyer), that the great majority of Mets customers who came to Shea without nameplates on a season box, were your most loyal fans. Thus, there has never been, I feel, a concerted effort to understand their fan base. They may cater to their higher-end customer base great, but it's not necessarily the same thing.

(Nods head in sad agreement.)

Speaking more to the diehards, young families and actual Met lovers-- the base of the customer base-- might have increased said base, to the point where it would have meant a lot less empty seats (and a lot more good will) during the doldrums of Grant's Tomb, Worst Team Ever, and Festival de Alomar... or the next, less economically-healthy downtime.

More than sad or angry, though... I'm mostly just confused. I took Intro to Marketing at Wharton during my undergrad years (was a liberal arts guy); understanding your customer base-- or at least attempting to-- is LITERALLY at the front of the book.
