Track of the Day

"It's All Too Much": George track from Yellow Submarine just blew my mind.

- A hybrid of George's Eastern and Western tastes

- Instrumentation that you can't really identify unless you pay close attention over a few listens --- guitars processed and occasionally backtracked, Indian horns, western horns, winds. I can't tell what's coming out of keyboards

- Can't distinguish Lennon's guitar work from George's

- Ringo contstantly filling but keeping the pulse --- this may be up there with "Rain" among his best tracks.

- Heavy (but pointed) use of feedback.

- Except for a beat or so on the hook, it's all on one chord, the Indian way.

Awesome track, too easy to overlook.

The 8 minute version (which I've only heard once) gives you even two more minutes of phantasmagoria. Here's the Wikipedia entry:

"It's All Too Much" is a song by The Beatles which first appeared on the 1969 Yellow Submarine film soundtrack album. It was written and sung by George Harrison. It was originally recorded in 1967, shortly before the release of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and had been slated to appear on the next album, Magical Mystery Tour, but it was pushed back.

The song was recorded at De Lane Lea Studios, making it one of only a very few Beatles tracks not recorded at Abbey Road Studios. Harrison and John Lennon played lead guitars on the song, and Harrison played organ and bass harmonica. Other than their earlier hit "I Feel Fine", this was the only other Beatles track to extensively use feedback. The track had the working title of "Too Much".

A mono mix, over eight minutes long and containing all of the lyrics plus a much longer ending than the eventual released versions, has never been released officially, but has been found on bootleg recordings.

The most well-known version of the song was further edited to over six minutes long and appears on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack album. The version of the song that appeared in the film itself is slightly different and contained a lyric that was cut from the album version: "Nice to have the time to take this opportunity/Time for me to look at you and you to look at me." However, this lyric remains in the eight minute mono mix.

The song contains several lines taken from other works; the "With your long blonde hair and your eyes of blue" line was from The Merseys' "Sorrow", and the trumpets at many points emulate Jeremiah Clarke's "Prince of Denmark's March", also known as Trumpet Voluntary.

Lunchbucket argues compellingly that, when you vote the song, and not the brand, that, well, you can't vote against this baby. In honesty, if there was a brand for this, it would be Smokey Robinson. The 6/8 time, the vocal dynamics, the harmonies --- they all bring to mind early sixties R&B. It could be the followup to "You've Really Got a Hold on Me."

Ms. Edgy also adds that you really can't vote against the singer's pants. It's, like, impossible.

It won't be long, yeah-eh

I stumbled upon a video of them performing it with the new singer in Chile. He nails it and the Santiagianos go wild.

The good news is that he's totally re-invogoratated Journey.

I guess it's a good day, because I go to sleep with the Ramones in my head.

It's amazing how the Ramones, while presenting themselves as a farce at so many levels, could unironcally capture what was great about the early sixties sound. Between Elvis and the Beatles, the spirit of rock 'n' roll may have been aslumber, but the art of songcraft was not. The Beatles, to their credit, drew from both. While the Ramones had the spirit of rock 'n' roll like almost nobody else, they would never be masters of songcraft. But they knew where to mine the craftsmanship when they needed it.

This tune is by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, and Phil Spector. Spector, of course, produces, as he did the original. The orginal featured Darlene Love and Cher, among others, backing Ronnie Spector.

I feel like I'm on a codeine high, and I mean that in the best possible way.

I think I'd sing along in full throat with the 7th-inning business if it were a Ramones song. (A rotation based on opponent/situation-- "Beat on the Brat" for the Phils, e.g.-- would be especially nice.)

I know-- weighed that in the decision.

I figure, hell-- they are from Queens, and more of the underdog Met spirit than, say, Diamond or the Monkees. and hell, Sharp-- we let Billy Joel close down the place, and he's the very model of a Yankee guy.

I would also be tickled with a singalong to PE's "Bring the Noise" or "Fight the Power"-- Chuck D is a huge Met fan-- or Nas' "Halftime."

I know, right? I might have gone the rest of my days and not given another thought to this song. Thank you, "Pandora"!

Back to "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'." I'm now realizing that I didn't dig deep enough into the song's soul sources, and the melody is a pretty close imitation (lawsuitingly close, the first two lines may be dead on) to Sam Cooke's "Nothing's Gonna Change This Love" --- a song that may be the father of all 6/8 R&B classics with country piano licks. Other fratenity members include "You've Really Got a Hold on Me," "Try a Little Tenderness," and "Never Tear Us Apart." Journey would later return to 6/8 soul vein with "Lights."

Even the lyrics seem to be cribbed from a Shaun Cassady* album.

Still kind of funny how they do the switcheroo on verse three.

Woah-woah!
Woah-woah!
Woah-woah!
Woah-woah!

She's the kind of a girl you can't get enough of
She's the kind of girl you need to feel the touch of
She's the kind of a girl that can really shake up your whole world
The kind of a girl you kinda never wanna let go!

Uh oh!
Uh oh!
Uh oh!
Woah, woah, woah!

I had some time to kill, I had a lot to learn, yeah
She said I heard you got a little money to burn, yeah
She said she knew some things to do, some places we could go
The way she looked I guess I kinda couldn't say 'no'!

Uh oh!
Uh oh!
Uh oh!
Woah, woah, woah!

And she took me by the hand
And she said she had some plans
And I tried so hard but I didn't quite understand
But she knows just what to say
And she always gets her way
And before too long it was clear as day
This girl was here to stay
She's the kind of a girl you can't take too much of
She's the kind of a girl you kinda had enough of
She's the kind of a girl that can really take up your whole world
The kind of a girl you kinda wish you didn't know!

Uh oh!
Uh oh!
Uh oh!
Woah, woah, woah!
* Yeah, my second Cassady family reference in two days. What of it?

I've got mixed feelings so far on the Hoffs/Sweet album. It's much more produced than the first, with both of them (Sweet in particular) drenched in echo. It's much more electric also, and rather than rely on the beauty of the song and their lovely voices, on the electric tracks, they really respect the original arrangements. And if you grew up when I did, those arrangements are really tired and played out, even as I continue to respect the songs and singers.

My favorite track from the first album, for instance was "Alone Again Or," when he takes a Spanish-Mexican guitar and re-invents a great song. They seem more willing to do that on the more acoustic-y ones, and the 70s gives them fewer of those than the 60s did, maybe. You listen to "Seen All Good People" there and the acoustic parts are revelatory and the electric parts are begging for a fast-forward.

My favorite so far is "You're So Vain," although nobody can make me sick of "Here Comes My Girl."

2 minutes of mellow grooviness, brought to you by the Ohio Express:

Fun Fact: The fellows in this video aren't actually the singers or players or writers of this recording. The writer/singer was Graham Gouldman, and the his band later to be known as 10-cc. The Ohio Express were one of those bands recruited to play "bubblegum" pop songs written by pros like Gouldman.

Did you know Gouldman also wrote Bus Stop (Hollies), For Your Love & Heart Full of Soul (Yardbirds), No Milk Today (Herman's Hermits), etc etc etc

sharpie
Aug 20 2009 07:57 AM

"Carrie Anne" was an original Hollies tune. Graham Nash wrote it about Marianne Faithfull but was too shy to use "Marianne" so it became "Carrie Anne."

I was a 10cc fan back in the day. "The Original Soundtrack" featuring "I'm Not In Love" and their next album (cant' remember the name) got lots of spins. I think they broke up shortly after that.

Nah, I facebooked it. But yeah.

The true story was that, as an 8th grader or whatever, I conflated Nile's "Vagabond Moon" and Steve Forbert's "Romeo's Tune" since they were both songs by scratchy-voiced New York-based Young Dylans about meeting girls at their windows.

Around a decade later Steve Forbert came out with the "American in Me" comeback album and went and filled in with his old records, and I kind of forgot Willie Nile ever existed until coming across (not literally) that video on some blog and it seeming familiar to me. I followed that back to his web site, and found a "Vagabond Moon" mp3 that punched me in the face.

They're performing in Japan in 1964 where they were and would remain huge --- one of the biggest western acts in Japanese history. They finally made it into the R'n'R Hall of Fame last year well too late for drummer Mel Taylor, but he cooked.

Masters of the tone arm, they're playing Mosrites here, which I associate with Johnny Ramone. I wonder if Mosrite sponsored their Japanese tour or something, because most footage from the sixties shows them with Fenders, and the lead guy would later switch to an SG.

Re: Track of the Day

While we're in the early years of rock 'n' roll, I haven't been able to get this thing out of my head all week.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgJwm9erBaQ

And this has the magic of early rock 'n' roll all over it. Gary Troxel and Gretchen Christopher, two Centralia, Washington teenagers, are waiting for Gretchen's mom to pick them up after school. Gary starts humming to a looping rhythm and Gretchen starts ad-libbing lyrics over it. They like it, can't stop singing it, and enlist Gretchen's friend Barbara Wilson to harmonize on it.

They finish it, and perform it two school functions. Their classmates demand recordings, so they go into the studio to cut a record, but they do it all wrong. Instead of laying down the instruments and dubbing the vocals over it, they record it a capella, as they've performed it, and lay the instruments over that. But it works, because the only instruments they decide to use are an acoustic guitar and the jangle of Gary's keys.

At this point a record company gets wind of this small phenomenon. These days, the label would buy them up, re-cut the thing with professional instruments, gated drums and a trip-hop interlude, fire one of the girls, take them out of the prom clothes, and slut everybody up. But the label only convinces them to change their name to the Fleetwoods (from their off-the-cuff original name of Two Girls and a Guy), taken from their telephone exchange FLeetwood-2, and change the name of the song from "Come Softly" to "Come Softly to Me," because "Come Softly" sounded too risque.

Anyhow, the song goes to number one on the pop charts and number five on the R&B charts, and still creeps into my dreams to this day. That is why "Come Softly to Me" is my track of the day.

Not a lot of feedback on that one, though.

Here we go. One of the top power pop songs you'll find:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cEvEUKN4Fw

Cool thing is that Paul Collins earlier band was the Nerves. He played drums, and would go on to found the Beat. He was joined by Peter Case, who would go on to found the Plimsouls, and Jack Lee, who wrote their best song "Hanging on the Telephone," and get rich when Blondie covered it.

Re: Track of the Day

Hitmaking duo Daryl Hall and John Oates announced Wednesday that they will release a four-CD box set that spans their remarkable 43-year career. Entitled 'Do What You Want, Be What You Are: The Music of Daryl Hall and John Oates,' the retrospective shows how they went from Philadelphia teens to the biggest selling duo of all time.

"This box set will be a treasure for the die hard Daryl Hall and John Oates fan and a creative surprise to the casual fan," Oates tells Spinner. " All the hits are there but the real gems are the unreleased tracks and live performances that showcase the true depth of our life's work as professional songwriters, producers and artists."

On top of their six No. 1 singles -- such as 'Rich Girl,' 'Private Eyes' and 'Out of Touch,' and their 10 Top 10 tracks, 'including 'You Make My Dreams,' 'She's Gone' and 'Everything Your Heart Desires' -- the 74-song collection includes 16 previously unreleased recordings. Of the 10 live tracks, five are from their first show in England while the most recent, a cover of the Mad Lads' 'I Want Someone,' comes from Hall's Internet series, 'Live From Daryl's House.' The six remaining studio tracks include outtakes, a remix of 'Gino (the Manager)' and a new recording of a lost 1972 demo, 'Dreamer.'

In addition, the liner notes for each song will be included in a 60-page booklet that also features never-before-seen photographs and a brand new band biography. Throughout the book, there are also testimonials about the duo and their music by notable musicians such as Mick Jagger, Carly Simon, Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen, Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard, Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump and many more.

The set will be released Oct. 6, just before the duo plays one of the final shows at the Philadelphia Spectrum Oct. 23.

How a H&O box set cannot include "Portable Radio" is beyond me.

I'm with Edgy that you can download the dozen or so "hits" and skip the 76 song saga that this seems to be.

I can live through a Hall & Oates song now and thought they were the bee's knees when I was in 3rd grade, but I can't see myself buying this.

Re: Track of the Day

The Temptones were Darryl's teenage vocal soul band

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIY7K4EcNbY

It seems he wanted to make it with a harmony and dance step outfit but the market was drying up for such acts and so he switched to the arty rock band presentation, even if he still considered himself a soul survivor.

If you beleve the legend they tell, a sock-hop --- in which Darryl's band and John's were each playing their new single --- broke up into a brawl between rival gangs with which Darryl and John were loosely affilitated. They met in freight elevator, and Darryl invited John to join his band --- and has been dominating the poor guy ever since.

I'm actually against Monk. I wouldn't download the MTV era hits, but rather fish through the other tracks, and take what works for me.

On edit: basically, disc three can bite me.

Re: Track of the Day

Yeah, I didn't recognize that explicitly, but it's there.

I like them a lot too. It's easy to dismiss them as a ripoff act. But to me, instead of trying to imitate their influences and do songs that would hide nicely on side two of their influences' albums, they use a very specific point in Beatles history as leaping off point and end up somewhere completely different.

They appear to be finished, as one of the Gallaghers walked out, basically acknowledging that he was gonna kill his brother if he remained in the band.

I really liked Ronstadt when I was an adolescent. She had a great set of pipes. It was interesting to see Patrick Simmons of the Doobie Brothers playing the conga drums on that clip. Andrew Gold (Lonely Boy and Thank You For Being a Friend which eventually became the theme song for the show Golden Girls) was on guitar instead of Waddy Wachtel. Waddy Wachtel, who seemed to play with everyone during the 70's and 80's, is forever linked in my mind with the Ronstadt albums of my teenage years. I remember him, because of his name more than anything.

Before You Go
Richard Shindell

Love, just a word before you go
Just a few things you should know
Come and sit here by my side
Love, how I wish that you could stay
There can be no other way
I must send you on your own

Love, here's a place and here's a name
Love, she will hold you in her arms
And show you who you are

Love, you'll be hungry, you'll be weak
You'll be tempted, you'll be free
To turn away from me
Love, dressed in rags and far from home
You will wander all alone
You will wonder where I am

Love, you will laugh and you will cry
Love, you will live and you will die
But only for a while

There's a world that you must bear
They're waiting for you there
To lead them from the night
And bring them to the light

Love, here's a place and here's a name
Love, she will hold you in her arms
And show you who you are
She will show you who you are
She'll show you who you are

Watched a great Austin City Limits this weekend (Nick Lowe & the Swell Season). The last Swell Season song was a Daniel Johnston number and the man himself came out to perform it with a group of Austin school kids doing backup vocals. Weird, weird, pretty awesome "collab" there.

I have just one Johnston album, "The Late Great Daniel Johnston Discovered Uncovered", where disc 1 is a collection of hip indie stars covering DJ songs and disc 2 are the originals performed by DJ.

I don't participate much here, but today's track 'o the day is "True Love Will Find You In the End", by Johnston. Beck's version on the album is incredible, btw.

Wikipedia sez:

The Semantics, a power-pop band formed by Millard Powers and Will Owsley, featured Jody Spence and Ringo Starr's son, Zak Starkey. Ben Folds appeared on drums on two demos which were not released and on keyboard at a few live performances. Folds was not involved with the creative aspects of the group. The band was signed to Geffen Records, and their album Powerbill, initially slated for release through Geffen Records in 1993, was released in Japan through Alfa International on December 21, 1996.

As an A&R guy, without listening to the demo, I'd be tempted to sign any band fronted by two guys named Millard Powers and Will Owsley.

Zak Starkey: big bonus.

What's the rule or accepted practice for rhyming the same word? What about rhyming homonyms? I'd say that rhyming homonyms are OK. What do you think?

Re: Track of the Day

A couple of examples where good songwriters have gone that route and survived

From Tom Waits:
Tell me is the crack of the poolballs, neon buzzin?
Telephone's ringin'; it's your second cousin
Is it the barmaid that's smilin' from the corner of her eye?
Magic of the melancholy tear in your eye.

to Tim Harden, who even went their twice in consecutive verses:
Lady came from Baltimore,
Her daddy read the law.
She didn't know that I was poor,
And lived outside the law.

Her daddy said, I was a thief
And didn't marry her for love.
I was Susan's true belief,
Married her for love.

Foreigner, on the other hand, just sound like they ran out of ideas or, maybe more accurately, never had any to start with.

Here's the Track of the Day for all you late Sunday night hipsters. But you'll hafta put on your platform shoes if you wanna groove to this one. Anthony Hamilton channels Nixon era soul funk for the period piece gangsta flick, American Gangster. That's right. The Nixon era. When Tom Seaver, The Rolling Stones, All in the Family and Mad magazine ruled. When the funk was sung instead of screamed. So sing it to me. Then sock it to me.

James Brown vibes, Bootsy Collins bass lines and tasteful dollops of psychedelicized wah-wah riffin'. Pay attention: the first note is worth the price of admission. This is how to use horns, Mr. Springstein. Enjoy. And keep on truckin'.

Comes in under two minutes too.

I discovered it by accident last night and when ABNS commented I replayed it this morning as I put on my shoes. Ms. E. comes into the room to urge me to get ready and ask what I'm doing, and I say "Watching a video of this sad pretty song."

So I let it play out and I she's sitting behind me and not responding. I figure she's eyerolling and wishing I would get a move-on already. The song finishes up and I turn around and she's an absolute puddle of tears.

I hate myself and apologize for bringing this song/video into your lives. Click it now.

Exactly, and that's precisely what I was expecting when I turned around. But no, THIS SONG BROKE THROUGH HER FA?ADE OF REPSONSIBLE EFFICIENCY.

Friends, are you bullied by an impatient wife? No fun and all we're-late-for-this, don't-waste-your-time-on-that? Where's that warm-blooded chickie that you first fell in love with? Well, click the link above and melt her stone cold heart in two minutes.

Stumbled across this nineteen-track live Butch Walker performance from last summer. Similar to the setlist I saw at Webster Hall in May, although missing a few of his better new songs, strangely.

I don't know if I've offered this one, so I'm offering it now to beat the rush tomorrow. It's a seventies country ballad from a seventies country balladeer. Yeah, Don Williams a signature performer of that genre, but --- dear little thing that it is --- it may still not stand out to you. A little interesting guitar couterpoint, maybe.

But just when it's about to fade into background noise on you, the refrain comes and it's like Brian Wilson walked into the room.

My wife and I discussed this this morning and determined that the bassline is very R.E.M.-ish but the other qualities of the song are distinctively Decemberistic.

Ozzy is a very classy guy. Best Lennon? tribute EVER!

Not sure what was worse, the song or watching a seemingly lost Ozzy walking around the city like a he is suffering from Alzheimer's. All the people ogling him are the not sophisticated New Yorkers I guess.

Are they getting work visas? I get going there, but it's pretty damn expensive to live there, too. What are you friends doing for work, besides dominating the Sydney rap/rock scene?? I know an English guy who went to Sydney for a while and could only get different day labor jobs on his visa. Think he's in Perth now.

It used to be that the lack of professional opportunity in Ireland meant they simply couldn't put out bad music --- nobody in the entire country. Then came the Celtic Tiger and the Coors. And, well, you might want to look for a silver lining in the ecomic decline as perhaps a return to musical awesomeness.

Nope.

That little guitar jangle is lifted directly from 'The One I Love.' It could be a sample for all I know. Don't get me wrong I like it.

Thats how ABBA got started. Amixture of Scandavian folk and any rock and roll vinyl they could find.

Glen Matlock of the Pistols claims he clipped "Pretty Vacant" from "Dancing Queen."

Well, so many popular artists from that era were doing the raggae thing, so I think of it more as one example of a prevailing trend, even if was better than most.

Edgy DC

Re: Track of the Day

I'm totally behind its classick status. It's maybe not true but seems to be true that every reggae song that has gone to number one in the US has been sung by a white guy. This came the closest to breaking that trend and it's reggae through and through, even praising Jah. Stevie was a fan and friend of Marley's and that's why "Jammin'" is the parenthetical title, so as not to steal a title from the guy (and song) he's using as an inspiration. I'd never heard anything like it because nobody played any actual real reggae on the pop radio and AOR radio stations I listened to back then. As Bucket recalled, when Marley died, Carol Miller played Clapton's cover of "I Shot the Sherriff."

When he drops from his tenor range to baritone at the end to do those double-time vocal maneuvers, I'm smitten.
