Lunchbucket argues compellingly that, when you vote the song, and not the brand, that, well, you can't vote against this baby. In honesty, if there was a brand for this, it would be Smokey Robinson. The 6/8 time, the vocal dynamics, the harmonies --- they all bring to mind early sixties R&B. It could be the followup to "You've Really Got a Hold on Me."

Sadly, even though he was from Queens, Joey Ramone was a big Yankee fan.
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Mar 24 2009 11:52 AM |
|
I know-- weighed that in the decision. I figure, hell-- they are from Queens, and more of the underdog Met spirit than, say, Diamond or the Monkees. and hell, Sharp-- we let Billy Joel close down the place, and he's the very model of a Yankee guy. I would also be tickled with a singalong to PE's "Bring the Noise" or "Fight the Power"-- Chuck D is a huge Met fan-- or Nas' "Halftime."
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Mar 24 2009 11:56 AM |
Or, maybe better yet-- Yo La Tengo's "Meet the Mets" at the 7th, instead of "Lazy Mary"?

I know, right? I might have gone the rest of my days and not given another thought to this song. Thank you, "Pandora"! Back to "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'." I'm now realizing that I didn't dig deep enough into the song's soul sources, and the melody is a pretty close imitation (lawsuitingly close, the first two lines may be dead on) to Sam Cooke's "Nothing's Gonna Change This Love" --- a song that may be the father of all 6/8 R&B classics with country piano licks. Other fratenity members include "You've Really Got a Hold on Me," "Try a Little Tenderness," and "Never Tear Us Apart." Journey would later return to 6/8 soul vein with "Lights."

I've got mixed feelings so far on the Hoffs/Sweet album. It's much more produced than the first, with both of them (Sweet in particular) drenched in echo. It's much more electric also, and rather than rely on the beauty of the song and their lovely voices, on the electric tracks, they really respect the original arrangements. And if you grew up when I did, those arrangements are really tired and played out, even as I continue to respect the songs and singers.

I really liked Ronstadt when I was an adolescent. She had a great set of pipes. It was interesting to see Patrick Simmons of the Doobie Brothers playing the conga drums on that clip. Andrew Gold (Lonely Boy and Thank You For Being a Friend which eventually became the theme song for the show Golden Girls) was on guitar instead of Waddy Wachtel. Waddy Wachtel, who seemed to play with everyone during the 70's and 80's, is forever linked in my mind with the Ronstadt albums of my teenage years. I remember him, because of his name more than anything.

I see your old-skool rap and raise you one. This song was on a compilation cassette tape I found for 1.99 at kmart in 1990. Loved every song on it, but I can only remember a few anymore. I know I'm impossibly old and all, but I think maybe hipping and hopping went backwards in the last 20 years.

Awesome. LOVE the old hip hop. As far as I am concerned the entire genre was buried with Biggie and Tupac, everything that has come out since they died has been shit.

Nice little guitar solo, good vocals, KILLER bass line, and a baffling change-up. The song of theirs I knew was the ska-flavored "Second Choice" but "Bogart" is really more representative of their junk.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Oct 15 2010 09:35 AM Re: Track of the Day |
The standout from the new Nick Hornby (words)/Ben Folds (more than words) collaboration: "Belinda." (Featuring a nice imaginary-hit-song-within-a-song conjuring from Mr. Folds.)

Funny - at the moment I have Picture Window playing in my head. I consider that one to be the standout.

Funny - because at the moment I have Picture Window playing on the 'puter. It's a medal contender for my favorite, and I like the losing-the-fight-against-optimism sentiment, but I think "Belinda" is just a little bit more fully-realized.

I'm not quite where JCL is, but... well... I'm a little disappointed (with the above exceptions). So far. I'll give it a little more time.
|
themetfairy Oct 15 2010 10:17 AM Re: Track of the Day |
Well, it's not his voice in the songs; it's Hornby's. Thus, it doesn't have the same kind of resonance as his other albums.

The Angels were formed in Adelaide sometime in the 70's (and recently re-formed). They tried to distance their sound from AC/DC as much as they could, which is sorta ironic cos Bon Scott frequently cited them as his fave band.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Nov 16 2010 08:13 PM Re: Track of the Day |
I was just listening to their American lineup, Angel City, playing "Shadow Boxer" (1979). That song brings the Thundah from Down Undah, and ranked No. 48 on the Top 121 of 1979 on rdio.com
|
Rockin' Doc Nov 16 2010 08:14 PM Re: Track of the Day |
I must admit that I had never heard of the Angels, but I like both songs. The guitarist is funny with his detached, disinterested appearance while all the time laying down some blistering solos. It's a shame that so many talented bands never seem to break through and make it big.
|
The Second Spitter Nov 17 2010 04:44 AM Re: Track of the Day |

I wasn't sure what you meant by this, so I did some research -- I had no idea they were only known as "Angel City" in the US. Huh. Gonna see them down in Melbourne in 2 weeks.
Their best known song is "Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again?" (as featured in the "K-Rod Arrested" thread -- was actually writing a parody at the time, which I didn't quite finish. Alas, the moment has now passed)....

Edgy DC Nov 17 2010 08:50 AM Re: Track of the Day |
The Angels sound like they fit in nicely with the surge of a nu wave/metal hybids that were coming out at exactly that time, maybe like the nu wave flip side to Judas Priest. Switch the levels on two sliders on the mixing room and the bands would sound pretty similar.

Hahaha. My sister was told me about ages ago. Said they stopped playing the song at school dances for that reason. The song also spawned a hilarious parody of its own which made it into the Top 10 a couple of years ago.

This came out just this week, or in 1987 when REM released 'Document' But if you liked that...
|
Edgy DC Nov 18 2010 07:22 PM Re: Track of the Day |
Good call. But there's an insistence (or similar quality) from Document-era REM tha't missing though, don't you think? I think it's in the intervals on the harmony vocal. Something about Mike Mills harmonies had him always attacking even when Michael Stipe was ready to surrender.

JCL turned me on to this dude at rdio & this is my fav song by him. Sounds a bit older & more mature than mid-20's. kinda looks like seth guy from '40-year old virgin' (a little chub + goofy + beard). Really like this album. Every time he says "far as the eye can................... see", I think my stereo or computer or phone broke and stopped playing the song.

Here's the Track of the Day for all you late Sunday night hipsters. But you'll hafta put on your platform shoes if you wanna groove to this one. Anthony Hamilton channels Nixon era soul funk for the period piece gangsta flick, American Gangster. That's right. The Nixon era. When Tom Seaver, The Rolling Stones, All in the Family and Mad magazine ruled. When the funk was sung instead of screamed. So sing it to me. Then sock it to me.

I don't know if I've offered this one, so I'm offering it now to beat the rush tomorrow. It's a seventies country ballad from a seventies country balladeer. Yeah, Don Williams a signature performer of that genre, but --- dear little thing that it is --- it may still not stand out to you. A little interesting guitar couterpoint, maybe.

Are they getting work visas? I get going there, but it's pretty damn expensive to live there, too. What are you friends doing for work, besides dominating the Sydney rap/rock scene?? I know an English guy who went to Sydney for a while and could only get different day labor jobs on his visa. Think he's in Perth now.

It used to be that the lack of professional opportunity in Ireland meant they simply couldn't put out bad music --- nobody in the entire country. Then came the Celtic Tiger and the Coors. And, well, you might want to look for a silver lining in the ecomic decline as perhaps a return to musical awesomeness.

Scandanavians seem to dig on-- and do as well with-- spinning bubblegum-catchy clatter out of garage as they do with the death metal. The latter makes some sense, given the long winters and all... but what gives with the former? Is this all the Hives' doing?

John Cougar Lunchbucket Dec 28 2010 07:46 AM Re: Track of the Day |
Well, so many popular artists from that era were doing the raggae thing, so I think of it more as one example of a prevailing trend, even if was better than most.
|
Edgy DC Dec 28 2010 08:48 AM Re: Track of the Day |
I'm totally behind its classick status. It's maybe not true but seems to be true that every reggae song that has gone to number one in the US has been sung by a white guy. This came the closest to breaking that trend and it's reggae through and through, even praising Jah. Stevie was a fan and friend of Marley's and that's why "Jammin'" is the parenthetical title, so as not to steal a title from the guy (and song) he's using as an inspiration. I'd never heard anything like it because nobody played any actual real reggae on the pop radio and AOR radio stations I listened to back then. As Bucket recalled, when Marley died, Carol Miller played Clapton's cover of "I Shot the Sherriff."
