Happy Saint Patrick's day.

the Irish delegation getting a lot of time today with President Obama , Taoiseach Brian Cowen will meet with him this morning for 40 minutes then it's Martin McGuinness and Peter Robinson in for a meeting. Later in the day Cowen will be hosted by Nancy Pelosi for dinner with Oresident Obama.

Pittsburgh Steelers Dan Rooney is expected to be named ambassador to Ireland today. Rooney founded "The Ireland Funds" back in 1976 to raise funds and awareness for Irish causes , to promote peace and things like community development throughout Ireland. Few have done more over the years.

Another reason may be that you need at least one full week of industrial strength drinking to be able to even look at a green bagel.

I must admit that I miss the Fifth Avenue puke fest less and less as I grow older. I do, however, miss the bagpipes.

Happy St. Patrick's Day to all.

'Is feidir linn'

Brian Cowen taught Barack Obama this saying yesterday and dammit if he didn't sound Irish when he said it several times.

Any clues as to what Gaelic saying that is?

seawolf17

It's Gaelic for "Don't pick Binghamton."

I know what it means, but the president should know better than to repeat a phrase whose meaning he doesn't know. He could have really been set up.

Maybe he was with the reset button, now that I think about it.

A few years ago, (2001 or 2?) Binghamton lost to North Carolina (yes, THAT North Carolina) by one point.
Hey, this year North Carolina was better than Duke.
This is the NCAA's.
Anything's possible.

This was a public service message from the dad of a Binghamton grad.

I don't speak Gay Lick.

That's it.

Two funny things. The Irish languash has no "yes," or "no," often leaving one to substitute Ta ("It is") or "Nil" ("It isn't") instead.

There are also several important verbs that Irish doesn't use, and are forced into using very poetic prepositional construcitons. Instead of "I like it," they say, literally, "It's good with me."

One of those missing verbs is "can," so that sentence literally translates as "It is possible with us" or "It is envisionable with us."
