Mets Obsessed

In this moning's <a href="http://www.philly.com/philly/hp/sports/20090330_Tigers_put_Willis_on_DL_due_to_anxiety_disorder.html" target="_blank"><i>Philadelphia Daily News</i></a>:

<blockquote>New York Mets manager Joe Girardi announced that Brett Gardner beat out Melky Cabrera for the starting centerfielder spot on Opening Day.

"Both of them played great," Girardi said. "Right now I think Gardie has a little bit of the edge. He brings a little more speed to the lineup."</blockquote>I'm sure Carlos Beltran would be surprised to learn that not only is Joe Girardi his manager, but Joe's starting some scrub instead of him.

The snippet is credited to the AP, but the error doesn't appear in any other wire reports, so clearly it happened at editorial level, where sweaty men are apparently waking up looking for Mets news to stoke a heated rivalry and paper sales. Looking so deeply, in fact, that they are seeing it where it is not.

It's comforting to know that --- somewhere --- the Yankees are the team that plays in the Mets shadow.

That main piece of that AP story, by the way, Dontrelle Willis being put on the 15-day DL for an undisclosed "anxiety disorder." You don't have to read too deeply between the lines to see this as a potentially long-term issue, though, when Dave Dombrowski, trying to sound optimistic, says, "But they feel, if treated in the proper fashion, that he has a chance to pitch again this year."

Gardie.....who the hell makes up the nicknames over there?.....lame

Poor Dontrelle , he was a joy to watch when on.

The quotes are out of the Snooze story, tho Joe could have been talking to several people at once.

I read somewhere the Tigers were considering releasing Willis.

That's universal baseball nicknaming construction.

Two of the more cringeworthy names to come out in Davey Johnson press conferences: "Millsy" (Keith Miller) and "Nailsy" (Len Dykstra).

Yeah it's a very British/Irish soccer style thing too....every player gets a O or a SY added to their name....

Which reminds me...
Does Daniel Murphy need a nickname?

Murph is taken, and should be retired.
I've heard "The Irish Hammer", but I don't think he has exhibited enough power to earn that one. B'sides, isn't that Bushmills?

Sooo, what would you nickname him?

Inquiring minds, etc....

EDIT: Mods, please feel free to split this into a separate thread if you feel it warrants it.

We need somebody to outline a proper nickname methodology.

Anyway, he's not "Irish." He's from Florida.

How about no nickname for him , I just couldn't see myself typing out" The Irish Hammer" or whatever the Florida equivalent would be .

How about 'Dan'?

Nicknames are better if they just come up spontaneously. They shouldn't be determined by committee.

Based on what you just read, and what you already know, there is no doubt that he will be called "Murphsie."

I thought I read somewhere last year he doesn't like "Dan," which is why he goes by "Daniel."

HA!

Along the same vein, there is a guy on a NYC sports talk show that is pushing a nickname on Murphy that was the name of some piece of equipment used by firefighters.

I don't remember what it was, but he was saying that it is a versatile piece of equipment, the way Murphy is a versatile player. And it ties into the NYFD's Irish heritage.

Heh, sadly it falls into the "its not good if you need to explain it in more than 5 words" category.

I think you're thinking of "halligan"-- used for prying/punching/twisting/doorbreaking... no word on whether it's from Germany. Not bad.

Howzabout "Hacksaw"-- he's a bit of more of a wood-chopper than a "hammer", offensively speaking.

It's huge in hockey, too. I could practically go down the whole Rangers roster like that. Bettsy, Orrsy, Korps, Staalsy, Gomer, Cally, Nazzy.

It's a shame that nobody on the team actually uses Lauri Korpikoski's fan-adaopted nickname, Korpedo.

Nightcrawler brings back fun memories, Val at his best I think. I would hope the archives have that old nicknames thread.

Black Mamba was the nickname given to himself by Kobe Bryant.

Say what you want about other nicknames, the height of douchebaggery is trying to give yourself a cool sounding nickname and being the only one to use it.

See "Bitch to the Admins."

I hope to get it fixed tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I had forgotten that Valadius was using "Creator of Nightcrawler and the Jake Monster" as his automatic signature line.

Sheesh.

Best post ever by Val. Not everyone would share like that.

Someone should tell the Seattle fans who Mr. Cellophane is.
