Mets by the Numbers is reporting that Sean Green is a dickhead and a coward for caving into fan pressure to change his uni number for fear of Heilman cooties.

What a huge disrespecting of Ed Glynn.

I hope Green shows more balls on the mound than he has with this act , imagine the conversation if he ever meets up with Heilman.

"I'm glad I didn't have to wear your crappy old number!"

"I'm glad I didn't have to play for your crappy old team!"

"I don't think the roof could handle it!"

"Ooh, good one! What, are you gonna punch me underhanded now?"

So... we're booing him on Opening Day, then, right?

Tate...Myers...Coach Niemann...it's a very Randy number.

Perhaps Green is just a prude.

]Sean Green loses that number (48), the same one Aaron Heilman wore BY Adam Rubin DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Wednesday, April 1st 2009, 4:00 AM JUPITER, Fla. - Reliever Sean Green was assigned No. 48 by the Mets after arriving in a trade from the Mariners, since his former No. 54 was already worn by bullpen catcher Dave Racaniello. But Green has learned that Aaron Heilman wore No. 48 as a Met. So resolved to swap his number for anything else by Opening Day, rather than place an added bull's-eye on his back with comparisons to Heilman if he has any early struggles. Coincidentally, Mets players watched Tuesday afternoon throughout their clubhouse as the MLB Network replayed Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS between the Mets and Cardinals. That epic included Endy Chavez's highlight-reel catch as well as Heilman serving up the game-deciding homer in the ninth to Yadier Molina.

The MbtN staff should call and request a brief interview to see if Green will offer some clarification or elaboration.

As someone who bought JCL's book, and reads it on the toilet all the time, I have to say that I am fine with Green changing his number.

Not sure why it makes him such a bad guy. Maybe I'm missing something.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Apr 02 2009 09:13 AM

Geez. It's about irony and ridiculousness and stuff.

The fans booed the last guy out of town, supposedly for being unable to stand up to the pressure, but they'll applaud the next guy when his first act is to surrender to fan pressure immediately. For Green, it's another unnecessary unkindness to Heilman whose success to this point in his career he ought to be striving for and not mocking.

Now, if Green wanted to change his number I got no problem with that, but he ought to concoct some story about his Mom's birthday or something.

Green could go the Carter route and say he spoke to Heilman and assured him he was joking and doesn't want his job....

Maybe Green is less concerned about the fans than he is about his own preparation.

Baseball players are generally a superstitious group. If somehow having Heilman's number is messing with Green's mental preparation for the season, then it's better for all of us to give him a new number and let him have a fresh start.

If he's a head case, then let him be a productive head case for us.

This is a nice lil bit of P.R. to start his stint with.
By "nice lil bit" I mean ridiculous.

Welcome to NY Green.

My first thought was that it wasn't as if Duaner exactly distinguished himself last year, either.

Yeah think about that;

- Sanchez has 1/2 of 1 good year as a Met. He then gets injured in a late-night taxi accident (just had to get Dominican food at that hour, huh?) and spends the remainder of 2+ seasons either injured, out of shape, ineffective, or some combination of the above.

- Heilman, on the other hand, turns in 3 seasons of 3.00-3.50 ERAs and sub-1.20 WHiPs before having a lousy season and HE's the one with cooties?!?

I know Green is reacting more the the fans' reaction to Heilman/Sanchez but it kind of shows how the thinking is messed up all around.

The SNY booth actually broached the subject when Green came in. The reasoning they gave was that Green had always worn a number "in the 50s" before and wanted to switch back into that range.

They made no mention of Heilman or Fortyeightgate as I will now call it.
