Run-DMC, who foreshadowed their election to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1985 when they shot their "King of Rock" video, around a plot of them bumrushing a rock museum actually refuses to perform at their election ceremony, keeping a promise to never again perform as Run-DMC since the murder of DJ Jam Master Jay.

"They tell me I could get Grandmaster Flash [to fill in]," DMC said. "But I can get any DJ in the world if I want. It wouldn't be right. I can't replace my drummer."

That's big.

Lotta guts, when he cuts
Girls move their butts
His name is Jay, hear him play
He must be nuts
And the mix real quick and I'd like to say
He's not Flash, but he's fast, and his name is Jay

'Cuz Calvin Klein's no friend of mine
Don't want nobody's name on my behind
Lee's on my legs, sneakers on my feet
Dee by my side and Jay with the beat

Down With the King, tremendous late-stage Run DMC record. On my list of albums that no one has but everyone needs.

Cop, you can't stop or drop, you shop wrecker
The mic checker, I take my pilgramage to Mecca
Jay with the records still a dose of double-decker
Me and Run'll come and have some fun, and we'll wreck a

shop on down, to the last stop, ha
We're givin rhythm to the Wisdoms on the block, ha
And ain't no business be a witness to the shot, ha

"Peter Piper" as 7th inning Citi-singalong would be the baddest... or a "Mary Mary Why You Buggin" following "Lazy Mary"...

Really would.

On a semi-related note, I can certainly see the argument for Run-DMC's enshrinement: They were hugely influential in important ways and all.

But let's just say they came along after the rap-and-rock connection had been made (sort of like how Madonna came along after Cindi Lauper built the rock-and-wrestling bridge). Would Run-DMC's catalog be worthy?

I'm looking at a few very strong efforts at the beginning but almost no sustained success after them. I thought Tougher than Leather was only OK, even allowing for the post Raising Hell letdown I knew we'd get. And "Back from Hell" (yes, I owned a copy) sounded like they knew they'd been licked by the Gangstas and were just copying them. The Beasties, to use one contemporary, followed their 1986 Rick Rubin-produced smash with better and better stuff, for example. RDMC didn't, I don't think.

FMan puts in a good word above for Down with the King, which I think was a Chrsitian record.

What do you think?

Probably not, but you simply can't take Run-DMC out of their context.

Do music genres change too quickly now? Or, should I say, have they done so in the past twenty years? Look at a band like Poison, or Def Leppard. Both had what you could consider HoF tracks, but what of the last twelve or fifteen years? Or Korn with rap-rock? Or a band like Soundgarden for the grunge scene? (There must be a better example, but I can't think of one. Nirvana obviously ended with Cobain, and Pearl Jam has still been productive.)

A case could be made for Leppard who were in a way genre setters to the bands that came to prominence in the 80's. Early Leppard stuff was very influentional .

That's part of the appeal of 'Down With the King.' It makes some Christian references, including the title, but it is really just a bad ass hip hop album.

Now I will admit that I don't have a problem with Back from Hell, but I am partial to the West coast G-Funk sound anyway.

They are pioneers. They rewrote the genre, tossed out the glammed up and disco-ish shit that preceded them, and stepped up with a style that no one had seen before, but everyone copied immediately following.

I agree with Seawolf, you can't separate the artist from the era. No one exists in a vacuum. It's about the music, sure, but that's just a part of it if you ask me.

They re-asserted rock as a valid form when few in the established rock family cared to and none of their earlier rap contemporaries could give a shit.

Yeah, they couldn't maintain their run. Few rappers could. We can't all be Salt 'n' Pepa. But sustained success is only part of the story. Advancing the form is another.

It'd take one hand to count the number of rap figures who did that, and I'd still be able to pick my nose.

Depends on which finger was left. Kinda hard to be precise with the pinky.
