Arroyo has traditionally done well against the Mets but has had health issues this spring, carpal tunnel syndrome mixed with crappy-pitcher-itis.
Edgy DC Apr 09 2009 10:41 AM |
Opening the game with a bad-call strikeout, and it seems Bill Welke is trying to take the heat off of his crewmate Angel Hernandez.

Important appearance for O'Day. With the starters not being able to go deep into games, he needs to prove himself more valuable than Marlon before the impending Livan roster move needs to be made.

Not exactly Jerry's best inning here...over-emphasizing the lefty-righty matchups and using two pinch hitters who are not as good at the plate as the guys they replaced.

Sheff!
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Apr 09 2009 01:32 PM |
For someone who seemed to emphasize how much he wanted to get away from l-r matchup-playing-- "guys who can just pitch," etc.-- he's done a LOT of it in this game.
seawolf17 Apr 09 2009 01:33 PM |
ESPN can get Gary Sheffield, who was signed fifteen minutes ago, photoshopped into a Mets hat, but when I clicked onto the Cubs game the other day, Aaron Heilman, now TWO teams removed from his Metsdom, is still in a Mets hat.
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Apr 09 2009 01:33 PM |
More like, "Sheff (shrug)."
Edgy DC Apr 09 2009 01:34 PM |
On the other hand, seems to me that was Castillo's at-bat he just gave to Sheffield.
John Cougar Lunchbucket Apr 09 2009 01:34 PM |
ugh
seawolf17 Apr 09 2009 01:35 PM |

Absolutely. What does Sheffield give you there? Even a home run doesn't help you. You needed a baserunner. Fuckin' hell, Jose.

Not watching-- question for anyone watching: is Cordero as dominant as the play-by-play is making him sound/look?
seawolf17 Apr 09 2009 01:36 PM |
Ugly.
Frayed Knot Apr 09 2009 01:36 PM |
Except that the top of the lineup was coming up and no other logical place to PH Sheff. Don't matter: K - K - K and we're not going 162-0 after all.
TransMonk Apr 09 2009 01:36 PM |
Well, I think Ollie will now officially have the fan-ire-target on his back.
Edgy DC Apr 09 2009 01:41 PM |
So, Sheff don't play. Or he gets used in extra innings. Big whoop.
Centerfield Apr 09 2009 02:20 PM |
First loss of the season is always the toughest. I'm glad it came after two wins though. All I ever ask is that the first loss not be before an off-day.
Frayed Knot Apr 09 2009 03:04 PM |
But he's been a better OBP man than Castillo over the years (and even recently) so it's not like he's an all-or-nothing guy who Jerry would be wasting by not saving him for a power spot that'll probably never come up. I'd rather go down using him and sitting Castillo than the other way around.
Gwreck Apr 09 2009 05:34 PM |
Actually, I'm pretty sure that recent history tells us otherwise.
Edgy DC Apr 09 2009 09:28 PM |
Luis Castillo reached at a .362 clip against righties last year, Gary Sheffield at .330. The best argument for Sheff is that Cordero is a rightie who is more effective against lefties than righties. But Sheffield is rusty and admittedly not in shape. He saw nothing but fastballs and looked at three strikes without taking a single cut. I'm dubbing it the most depressing at-bat of the year.

Good IGT, peeps. I taped the games both last night and the night before and didn't start them til about 8:30. The game w/ Pelfrey the night before felt like it was being played in drying cement and I was really hoping for a crisp, 2 hour and 20 minute game last night. A couple hours and 5 walks later, I was asleep on the couch like a baby.
