IGT, 4/16, vs. San Diego

Edgy DC
Apr 16 2009 08:57 AM

The Mets take on All Star and bad American Jake Peavy tonight, and counter with John Maine, a pitcher who loves the United States so much that he is named after one of them.

They sit three games off the blistering pace of the Marlins, and hope to get above .500 for the second time this season, and above .500 at CitiField for the first time ever.

PV was excellent his last time out, while Maine was hitting the nineties and striking Fish out, so this game could be as good a watermark as anything, if you're looking for that sort of thing.

For those of you delighting in young Hundley's clumsley defense, it looks like the Pads are planning to use Henry Blanco as PV's personal catcher, his PVC, as it were.

I'm 1-0 in IGTs, even after a disastrous start yesterday. Extend my streak.

Gary says that the Murphy cut off throw to Reyes last night was by design , it's a play they worked on all Spring Training. Manuel said he saw it before with an ageing Greg Vaughn in Tampa.

On the radio they weren't sure if Reyes would've scored how did it look on tv?

It probably would have had to have taken (conditional present perfect imperative present?) a funky hot. If the outfielder fields it more or less clean, Reyes holds.

Delgado gets a reprieve in that the foul ball he hit would have been caught if the 3rd baseman wasn't in over-shift playing the SS position.

and then he strikes out on a very questionable call.

Edgy DC
Apr 16 2009 08:13 PM

Somehow, deriding the Padres unworthiness after they just beat the Mets two out of three games in their new ballpark doesn't make me feel any better.

I know the season is very young, but this team has succeeded in dampening my excitement for this season. I'm sure winning two games in a row would greatly improve my mood.

it was outside. and although it was letter high, and letter high is a strike in the rulebook, its not a strike that was being called all game (heck, it hasnt been called consistently for as long as i've been following baseball)

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Apr 16 2009 09:18 PM

Yeah, the Mets lost this one in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th, every bit as much as the 9th.

Yeah, sounds goofy but Maine's 2 bad innings came directly after having bad sac bunt attempts.

Very nice new stadium I say, but awfully cold weather.

It might if you catch any of the Heath Bell interview on ESPN. He's extremely pleased with himself. Which I guess he has a right to be but a childish part of me is very happy that he's going to play for a losing team this year.

duan
Apr 17 2009 04:42 AM

what's troubling is really that the mets 3,4,5 & 6 hitters have got off to pretty torrid starts. I know David Wright hasn't looked in sync
but the OPS' of them go like
.872
1.072
.905
1.099

that should be a sign of winning team, not a losing one.

Rockin' Doc
Apr 17 2009 05:23 AM

I had the same thought during the game last night. This team is strugling to win, even though Delgado, Church, Beltran and Wright are all off to good starts. Hell, even Castillo is hitting, yet the team is struggling to win. The Mets just can't seem to hand a lead to Putz and Rodriguez with any regularity. Hopefully, the starting pitching will get more consistent in the near future.

Apr 17 2009 06:12 AM

I agree with Greg's descriptions and accounts of the game.

I'll add a picture. This is in the kiddie Mets store in the Fanfest area. It's a Mr. Met made out of jellybeans -

Without doubt the most disappointing loss of this young season for me , facing their ace and getting to him early but failing to put the hammer down as it were.

TransMonk
Apr 17 2009 06:57 AM

I had to leave the house early last night, but caught the first inning and the Delgado HR. I thought with a 3 run lead against Peavy we would be set. Thoroughly disappointing to see later that they lost by a run.

Really everyone except Schneider is hitting at least decently if not better.
Reyes has been just so-so while getting his walks (though several outs made on the basepaths haven't helped) but Castillo's got a .450-ish OBA making one wonder about the proposed lineup with him up top.

Non-regulars aren't helping with their 3-for-33 clip and there have certainly been those 1-for-12 w/RiSP nights.

Edgy DC
Apr 17 2009 07:15 AM

Souring Point of the Game has to be a Met rally against a Duaner Sanchez that is clearly faking it at this point --- such that he wanted nothing to do with Gary Sheffield --- evaporating as Jose Reyes GiDP'd on a 2-1 87-MPH fastball up out of the zone. Uggo.

Wright is looking a lot like he did early last year --- not yet having his mechanics down to drive the ball to right center, but still getting a hit per night by pulling the low pitch.

It really looks like this park could eat up Wright's power away, at least early in the season, but none of that matters if he continues K-ing at this rate.

Gary Darling was punching Mets out on outside pitches off the plate was a frustrating thing, and it may have gotten in the Mets' heads. Delgado already had fouled off two outside pitches in that last at-bat.

Had this been at Shea, I would have walked out a bit more grumpy. No offense to speak of after inning 1. "One Bad Inning" coming over to visit with our starter again. I guess the whole new ballpark honeymoon thing had me feeling less mad than I would normally.

Highlights were getting to meet MetFairy and Kace, and watching the little Solos blast 4 HRs combined at Kiddie Field. (if you have young kids, take them there...even if you have to wait on line it is worth it; it doesn't take too long, and the kids love it).

TransMonk

I'm still not worried either...disappointed, but not worried. Like batmags said, a bunch of 1 run losses. And, not for nothing, but the Mets have also played some of the best (overacheiving) teams early in 2009.

We need to spank the Brewers, though.

I'm not sure they have to. I like going for a stockpile of good starters, and not killing ourselves for greatness.

Eventually, more great may emerge from the goodness.
