We don't bend the rules for no one

I don't think this has come up in another thread, if it is someone feel free to
nuke this. Tomorrow nights game in FLA will be JOINED IN PROGRESS? The
game is starting at 6 to accommodate some post game concert or something
and of course that falls into the FOX Dynasty blackout time.

Now you may say, Kong, why do you get yourself all worked up over stupid
shit? It's what I do, stuff like this make my inner mental patient surface. They
can't wave an hour of blackout so that we can watch a game in it's entirety?
What if Bozo hits his 500th home run? What if it's the first three innings of
the Mets first no-no? What if Keith says something so off the wall funny that
it would be quoted for the next three weeks and no one will hear it?

At least it's not the Yankee game that's in the way. Surprising, how did the
Skanks escape the reaches on FOX Dynasty and The Two Blow Holes on the
first telecast of the season? Oh, they're playing the Royals ... nevermind.

And first one to say FOX Dynasty pays big money for that time slot is gonna
get a wet noodle slappin' upside the coconut.

Between crap like this and the arcane MLB.tv blackout rules, MLB does a fine job of preventing their customers from having access to the product. What a genius business model.

Don't sit on your ass! Pick up the phone and give them a piece of your mind.

MLB: (212) 931-7800. Ask for public relations.

Person I spoke to had no idea of the conflict and promised a call back after looking into it.

FOX has exclusive rights to the 4PM to 7PM time slot . I think this is outrageous . We could miss two or three innings.

Notice how he didn't ask who The Two Blow Holes were though.

Lemme guess, they're doing the Cardinals game.

Fox Sports (212) 556-2500 (all I get is a busy signal) -- if I do get through they're getting a piece of my mind as well.

What an under-reported story. <strike>Where's Mushnick when we need him?</strike> [url=http://www.nypost.com/seven/04102009/sports/mets/mets_fans_taken_for_a_rida_163809.htm:19rp3tt8]Right here[/url:19rp3tt8], it turns out, although he fails to place the blame on Fox and MLB and instead gives us inanity about the post-game concert that the Marlins are having that led to the early start time.

The Marlins DO deserve a fair share of the blame here. The Marlins are part of MLB and they knew of MLB's contractual commitments to FOX which presumably pre-dated the scheduling of this concert, they should have started the game at the normal time, which is what the Mets do when they have a post-game concert.

themetfairy
Apr 10 2009 11:49 AM

If they were so worried about having a concert, they could have scheduled a pre-game show.

Sheesh....

Gwreck
Apr 10 2009 11:51 AM

Any "blame" that the Marlins have is MLB's fault. MLB needs to get the clubs in line, and if it means forcing teams to schedule their games outside the Fox broadcast window -- well, then they need to do it.

I also forgot that News Corporation owns both the NY Post (Musnick's paper) and Fox Sports (one of the parties directly involved here) so there's also the whole conflict-of-interest problem if Mushnick is addressing this.

It was also mentioned in the Snooze.

Maybe I'm losing my edge but being forced to listen to the radio for an hour is stupid and unnecessary but probably not the worst thing in the world.

Wow, I didn't even know about this. Agreed w/ NYMR about the Marlins being equally idiotic w/ the scheduling. But not wholly surprising that they don't give a shit about people not being able to see their product.

I still don't get why FOX "owns" airspace on regular season game, but think MLB should get the brunt of the noise for negotiating such a stupid deal w/ them.

I'm having this whole thread nuked. I bought exclusive posting rights on the CPF during 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays.

And I'm charging each of you for infringing on my exclusive. Certified checks or money orders please.

That ain't the "Mets on TV" Johnny Dickshot who phoned, emailed, and faxed politicians into submission during the Dolan TV squabble.

Spitzer turned to that chick because you made his job too stressful.

Is tomorrow a Fox or Ch. 11 game? It would be really odd for SNY to be doing a pregame from 6:30-7 while the actual game is going on.

Simple answer is that they paid for it. MLB, as most sports (except for The Masters) do, lets TV dictate the terms and FOX is going to voluntarily give up the NYC market for their expensive game right after politicians start voluntarily giving up votes and campaign contributions.

The Marlins, meanwhile, aren't televising that game locally at all so it's not like they care that SNY is blocked out for the first 55 minutes.

It's Miami at 6 PM. I wouldn't bet against a rain delay.

I remember reading this earlier in the week. Isn't their local contract to a regional FSN affiliate-- what gives for skipping a Saturday telecast? I remember Loria giving game broadcasts the same short shrift in Montreal-- no English-language radio deal for the last season under his control, eg.-- but that was on the way out the door, and "lack of fan interest" dovetailed neatly with his/MLB's joint screwjob.

Answers = Yes and I don't know (I don't think there's a Heat conflict).
But not all teams televise every game (we New Yorkers have long been a bit spoiled on this topic) and Saturday nights are traditionally the worst TV slot of the week. Maybe they think it boosts weekend attendance to shun TV every once in a while.

btw, first pitch in now scheduled for 6:25 so, at most, TV will miss 2 innings (and, at the rate these early games have been played, maybe less than 1)

Locals cable channels (but not over-the-air channels) can show the local teams. However, the broadcasts cannot begin after 1 PM eastern and before 7 eastern as FOX has exclusive TV rights to baseball during those hours.

EI and mlb.tv cannot show any game that starts during the above hours, even if it is on FOX but not available locally (so tonight's game isn't on the EI schedule). The rules differ for EI and mlb.tv for 1 starts (I don't know why).

As a result, as a Mets fan in the DC area: if the Mets have a 1 PM Saturday game, it is on mlb.tv but not EI. If the game starts after 1 and before 7, it is not available in either venue. (One year, the Mets had a Saturday DH against SF. The second game started after the FOX game finished but before 7 so it wasn't available outside of NY and SF.) If the Mets are on a FOX game but it is not shown in DC, it is not available on EI or mlb.tv (as if I'm going to say "hey, the Mets aren't on but the Orioles are so at least I have baseball).

The blackout rules are overlybroad and unfair. E.g., EI and mlb.tv subscribers in Las Vegas are blacked out from 6 different teams broadcasts. This has been talked about for years and Selig talks about fixing it but never does. Maybe with today's absurdity, something will be done (although I wish it happened to a MFY broadcast).

But... but... that means less vocal warm-up time for Flo Rida... and a subpar version of that "Shawty got low, low, low, low" song. Oh, most pyrrhic victory!
