MetsGrrl on...

MetsGrrl (referencing two other Mets bloggers, because information is a team sport) on the the outline of Shea:

HISTORY NEVER REPEATS.
Steve of the legendary Kranepool Society linked to this post over at The Mets Police, regarding the Wilpons’ promise to commemorate the previous location of Shea Stadium in the parking lot.

I linked to it on the new MetsGrrl.com Tumblr (more on that below) and added a few of my own thoughts --- but then I started to go a little crazy once I started thinking harder about it. I had been wondering about this, when we went to the St. John’s game, looking at the parking lot and how 70-80% of it was already completed and couldn’t see them being all that willing to repaint in order to paint the foul lines or the other markers that were originally promised.

And, within weeks, the Mets will mark the locations of Shea’s home plate, bases and pitching rubber with bronze plaques in what is now the Citi Field parking lot.
and

But a Mets spokesman said the club doesn’t plan to mark additional spots.
I was going to start to say that I got it, and I understand that you can’t mark everything --- and then I stopped.

Actually, I don’t understand. Why can’t they mark everything? I realize that in the annals of baseball history some of these events may not be earthshaking, but in the annals of Mets history, and New York baseball history, these events are important to us. This is OUR HISTORY. This is the Mets history. ...

What spots would you like to see designated?

There are several I'd like to see.

I'd like to see a life-size image of Ron Swoboda's diving catch embedded into the parking lot in the spot where it occurred.

Edgy DC
Apr 14 2009 09:49 AM

I'd like the entire outline of the external façade painted out there.

I'd like the entire outline of the internal walls painted out there.

I'd like the basepaths painted out there.

I'd like the arch of the infield dirt painted out there.

I'd like a raised pile of tarmac connoting the mound.

It seems to me that we don't need to wait for the Mets to do these things.

For we are the people. And paint is available at your local Sherwin-Williams. Tarmac is only a little tougher to come by and transport.

Why the hell not mark these things? I hate to go all StevieJeets, but it smells like the Mets not wanting to acknowledge their history. To me, the uninformed layperson, it would be a fun, low-cost way to have some fun with the fans. But what do I know?

Mine is simple really:

A scale replica of a stage around second base with three gutiarists up front, a drum kit in the back center, and a keyboard off to the first base side.

In other words:

And my dream would be for this to blare out, within reason, a continous loop of the set from that night, sprinkled in with some era specific tunes.

I would love to see this. It would make the papers, the fans would love it, and the Mets might even just let it be as a kind of folk art commemoration. What difference would it make to them what is painted on the parking lot, as long as it's respectful?

I like this idea.

So it's a dark-of-night, spraypaint brigade. If it's planned properly beforehand, like really well-planned, a team of us could pull it off.

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 15 2009 08:17 AM

I'd be willing to design a Ron Swoboda stencil.

Along with some blue, orange, and while spray paint I think a stylized diving Ron could be applied fairly quickly.

There will be cars in the way

Edgy DC
Apr 15 2009 08:25 AM

The odd tire, true, but the cars would provide cover.

Many fans will move their cars.

But I'm not opposed to a dead of night commando raid, though I'm sure security is tighter than it was at Shea.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Apr 15 2009 09:39 AM

Your plan is untenable. People won't move their cars. Plus in order for it to be seen as a true work of art and not public properly destruction, it has to be authentic and to scale and well-planned and stuff.

I suppose we could also do it in sidewalk chalk in broad daylight. Maybe that would work.

Are you so sure about that? Hell, we get enough scratch together, we just might be able to pay Schiraldi to do the paint job.

Great. We'll go in as catburglars.

Are the bases and plate down yet? we need them as reference ponts.

Is the lot still open for commuter parking on non-event days? I remember a few times years ago I'd park my car at Shea and then take the subway into Manhattan.

And if that option is still available, what are the hours? If it's staffed and patrolled 24 hours, it might be harder to find an opportunity.

But if the gates close at some point, it might be hard to get out of there when the task is complete.

JCL has a chalk contact on facebook so that's a help.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Apr 15 2009 10:08 AM

Yeah I'm kinda liking the non-criminality of using chalk. Plus its less expensive. It will last until the next rain -- hopefully time enough for the Mets to have gotten the point.

What we need to do now is agree on a list of things to be included, make sure we can draw them, and scout the security situation. Also, hire a team of chalk artists and videographer.

Then set a date/time (plus a rain date).

Finally we do it, alert the media, and then do all the morning shows.

A dry run the day before at some other lot somewhere in the boonies.

At the risk of doing an SJR and quoting from other boards, somebody on baseball-fever suggested chalking, with the proper colors, the seating diagram from Shea, with the bases, in the parking lot, kind of a Christo-type project that could be seen from the air and be the talk of the town. Everybody could see exactly where everything was and where they once sat, stood and rejoiced. I'd throw in a marker for each of the Ten Greatest Moments as voted on by you, the fans, last year.

I like that idea, but I'd prefer the monochrome, old-school seating diagram, the one that looks like it's made out of piano keys:

What the Mets should do:

What we could do, theoretically, if prepared with a good stencil:

Best part of that catch is that his knee is down, his hand is down, and the ball isn't anywhere within the perimeter of his glove yet. How many "diving" catches occur where the man actually toches down before leather hits leather. I swear he slid a foot or two before the ball hit the glove.

I'd like for the Mets to build an exact size replica model of Shea Stadium over the exact same spot where the real Shea Stadium formerly stood.
