Okay all you official scorers out there

Armchair Howie Karpins, I mentioned this in the IGT, and wonder if you guys have any clarification:

Why is Reyes only credited with a single on the play at second? He clearly touched the base before the tag, and was only tagged out after sliding past the base. Shouldn't it be a double?

Subquestion, why then does Gerut get an assist, when his throw did not beat Reyes to the base?

All I could think is perhaps the ump never gave a safe sign at second, and the runner does not get credit for reaching the base until a safe sign?

That's a good theory.

The assist is more or less proper, because the scoring starts from the top of the play.

Over-sliding is treated differently than gaining possession of the base and then wandering off. It's looked at as if he was never really safe (ergo: no double) even though he did reach prior to the tag.

Gerut gets the assist because his throw led to Reyes being out. Whether it was six inches before the bag or six inches beyond it is considered irrelevant.

My buddy is an offical scorer. I'll ask him these questions.

I believe Frayed Knot pretty well nailed it.

The overslide and subsequent tag are simply a continuation of the initial play at the bag.

OK, I bounced this off Will, who scored the Columbus Clippers for several years while researching for a book about the minors.

1) Jose Reyes hits one to the outfield, goes for a double, gets to the base, but slides through it and is tagged out.

He's credited with a single and the bastard Jody Gerut got an assist.

Our questions:

1) Since Reyes did in fact reach second safely and was tagged after coming off the base, shouldn't he get a double and not a single?

A: Yes.

2) Why does the bastard Gerut get an assist when his throw didn't beat Reyes to the base? Shouldn't it be given to the second baseman who applied the tag?

A: Gerut gets an assist, because an assist goes to every player who makes a throw that leads to an out, regardless of whether the throw preceded the play or not. The second baseman gets the putout.

Official scorer should change the call unless Reyes never did in fact touch the base. If he "clearly" touched it as you say (didn't see it) that should be a double.

Man, and I thought you were going to give me a tough one. ;-)
