As we mark the 15th year since the suicide of Kurt Cobain, I wonder if his early passing compressed their catalog into a small enough heart-shape box that it can be looked at in the context of one of our custom polls.

Probably not, as I'm sure many prefer Nirvana's album tracks, covers, and flip sides, but it's a notion I got while wondering if Carly Simon would make a good subject.

In arranging this poll I'm not particularly proud to report that I've submitted my first YouTube post. I saw below one of the videos, "RIP, Kurt. Simply the smartest, sexiest, coolest rock start ever. We worship him here in the UK. Sadly, only pockets do in the States." I had to respond, "Oh, shut up." I think I'm done posting at YouTube.

Almost none of the posters believe he actually killed himself.

Anyhow, pick a track, as you contemplate just how successful Krist Novaselic might have been in the NBA.

Wow, the Really Important Poll lives!

I discovered recently that Nirvana covered a Devo song, "Turn Around," which initially was the flip-side of the "Whip It" single. It's pretty good! and on YouTube somewhere too. Devo's throwaways were better than a lot of group's trying hard.

It's a shame Cobain died because it had to give rise to the Foo Fighters.

Just kidding.

I prolly like "Heart Shaped Box" of those above, or even if its become sort of a parody of itself, "Teen Spirit," based as it was on "More Than a Feeling."

Will vote later.

"Teen Spirit" is what it is.

Torn between "In Bloom" and "All Apologies," both of which had significant impact on my high school years. One of my favorite things we've ever done was to bring my friend Paul on stage with us during our band days to play cello on that one and "Disarm" by the Smashing Pumpkins. Still have that tape; I wish I had an easy, free way to convert tapes to mp3s.

It's a shame Cobain died because it made him a martyr, which in retrospect, is really crap. The Foo Fighters would blow Nirvana off the stage any day of the week.

The more you llive, the more you realize how many riffs they ripped off. Not only "More Than..." but "Come As You Are" seems to come from "Eighties" by Killing Joke, and "In Bloom" from a Bad Brains song called "Re-Ignition." I'm sure there are others I've picked up accidentally.

Poor seawolf. The Bleach Mafia will surely have him killed for his blasphemy --- if they haven't already.

I'll vote later as the song I have stuck in my head I can't put a name to yet....I have the riff but can't watch youtube here at work....

Not a big Nirvana fan, though I do respect them.

I voted for Heart Shaped Box but there are any of a dozen that I could pick. I enjoyed their work.

I do think anyone with a little baby child who kills themself is the ultimate self-centered ass. But I can separate the music from the man.

Could go with any one of the above... but I won't. "In the Pines/Where Did You Sleep Last Night," ftw-- the anguished yowling works better in that than in any actual Nirvana composition.

[In high school, I found myself putting the Leadbelly cover on far too many actual mix tapes.]

Can change depending on the day. Today's voting day however so "Sliver" wins.

Not a big Kurt fan...pretty overrated IMO. He wasn't even the best singer/songwriter/guitarist in his band, much less of the movement.

That being said, his influence on music at the time cannot be overlooked.

That would've been my alternate vote.

The vast majority of the Unplugged album is terrific, specifically the covers done (the Bowie song, the Meat Puppets, Leadbelly, etc.).

I love the Meat Puppets.

The song I have stuck in my head and that I can't remember the bane off opens up with hard driving guitars ......dadadadada...dadadada.....anyone know what that is?...certain it's on Nevermind.

sample lyrics are....remembering that I could never decipher what Cobain was singing

"Breed"?

Yeah I think you are right about "Breed" , looking at the lyrics and they match what's in my head but what wouldn't come out.

Good call edgy.

I'm going "Sliver." More of a sense of humor might have saved him.

Torn between "In Bloom" and "Sliver" and, like, 4 others. Loved that "Incesticide" album.

Going "Sliver" by a hair.

I've tried really hard to like the Foo Fighters, but I always end up not.

I'm with Seo on the not-liking-the-Foo-Fighters front.

Go, Sliver.

I guess perspective makes a difference, because I tried hard to not like them, but find myself doing so. Sort of like the "I like this. Who is it? Them?! Shit, I guess I like them."

Not that I've ever bought a record of theirs. Maybe I've downloaded a single track.
