I'm not sure if internet petitions do anything, but I guess they're more appropriate when directed against an online entity like Amazon.

I just woke up from a long ugly nap and amn't sure I follow the policy very clearly, but it took a dive and surprised myself by "signing." A handful of Irish novelists that I've studied (and at least one that I've hosted) are on that list.

If that is truly their policy, it doesn't sound like a policy that can be fairly applied. It seems like if the same standard is applied broadly, such a large chunk of popular fiction and popular music would be elimnated that it would make the lists meaningless.

From Mark Doty, a great contemporary poet (de-listed by Amazon) and the person who brought this to my attention on Facebook --

]Okay, this is the most amazing thing. If you go on Amazon and type in "butt plug" in the search window, you'll see a number of them for sale, with sales ranking attached! So, it's okay to rank butt plugs but not books? Umm...

I thought that also and is sort of what I'm getting at. "Adult" merchandise, but not books?

I don't want to know now, you can answer on Tuesday, but what's

Wake up.

Pee.

Think you're done napping.

Collapse again.

Repeat.

From today's Publisher's Weekly:

A groundswell of outrage, concern and confusion sprang up over the weekend, largely via Twitter, in response to what authors and others believed was a decision by Amazon to remove "adult" titles from its sales rankings. On Sunday evening, however, an Amazon spokesperson said that a "glitch" had occurred in its sales ranking feature that was in the process of being fixed. The spokesperson added that there was no new policy regarding "adult" titles. As of Monday morning, a number of titles affected by the glitch were still without sales rankings. No one at Amazon was available this morning to discuss when the problem might be fixed or what caused the glitch.
