Jerry puts Murphy back on the horse, trying to build up the kid's cahn-fidence.

I want more Santos.

It doesn't mean much but after listening to Razor talk before the game I feel like Murphy will be OK and so will the Mets.

LETS

Nice running catch against the wall by Duncan, that son of a pitching coach.

Oh yeah, I'm borrowing that one.

Sorry, Irish.

Murphy smacks a single up the middle to tie it up. 1-1, middle 3rd.

Did he navigate his way to first base ok?

Swan Swan H
Apr 22 2009 07:04 PM

That he did. I think Reyes held on second so Murphy wouldn't get any ideas.

Apr 22 2009 07:06 PM

I'd like to see Castro block the plate more, like whats-his-nuts does for St. Louis.

RBI FC, 3-1 Cards. Lame.

I hat Ankiel's moustache.

You don't deserve to get out of an inning unscathed when you start it by walking the pitcher. And he got scathed.

Especially with, say, the pitcher coming at you. For Chrissakes, Ramon. He's not going to hit you. Stop being such a candyass.

Number 6

Single for the candyass.

I liked our chances with Castillo up there and he hit it hard, but right at the guy. And so it goes.

Maine sucks.

Fman99
Apr 22 2009 07:29 PM

Boo again.

I'm beginning to think that the key to scoring runs is getting hits when there's a guy on 3rd base. But what the hell do I know.

Now where is my gin?

Fman99
Apr 22 2009 07:38 PM

Oh, I do enjoy the latest "don't smoke" commercial on SNY. A woman with a bunch of nubby fingers due to poor circulation. It's kind of hot, actually. I also have a hankering for Jimmy Dean breakfast sausages.

Rockin' Doc
Apr 22 2009 07:38 PM

How hard is it for the Mets staff to learn that walks kill? Maine apparently didn't pay attention during lastnight's debacle. He has walked 4 hitters in his 4 innings of work and each of them has come around to score. Throw some strikes. Hell, if you feel so inclined to walk people, walk Pujols rather than the hitters in front of him.

Fman99
Apr 22 2009 07:39 PM

Enjoyed Kevin Burkhart's testimony on how much better Busch stadium is than Citi Field. Then they showed Ozzie's walk off postseason dinger.

What the fuck? Why are they doing this to me?

Fman99

Hey Doc, you got any breakfast sausages?

This Rasmus fits right in wearing a Cardinal uniform with the rest of the smug-looking pricks they've had over the years - Edmonds, Herr, Drew, Ankiel, Van Slyke. Just the look of them gets to me.

Holy hell. Again, Fossum coming in with the bases loaded and two out.

I feel like this happened before.

seawolf17
Apr 22 2009 07:56 PM

Seriously? One more batter for Maine, even though he just gave up a hit to a guy who's spent his entire career in the AL?

And that backfired.

And here comes Fossum to walk in more runs. Seriously, Jerry?

Church was doing fine and the Jerry decided to sit him for Sheffield. Maybe one game didn't matter but I doubt that it helped.

Please..not Another year of crappy uninspired baseball..Wouldn't you think after 2 Septembers to misremeber and the new Stadium..oops.park..we would have started with a new manager if for no other reason than to clean the slate.

From Manuel on down, with the exception of Johan I see lethargy. Even David Wright is getting on my nerves.

Maybe losing is a disease.

Gwreck
Apr 22 2009 08:50 PM

Wow this was bad.

What happened to our starting pitching?

Rockin' Doc
Apr 23 2009 05:28 AM

Johan had the day off.

Seriously, I'm least worried about Pelfrey. I think he'll be okay as a #3 or #4 if he can get an effective second pitch to go with his fastball. Perez is a head case that I'm convinced will forever be maddeningly inconsistent due to his failure to throw strikes. I'm worried that Maine may not recover from his are problems to regain his prior form. I do however hold out more hope for his coming through to fill the #2 slot than I do Perez. I think Omar over estimated the quality and depth of the starting rotation and funneled so much energy into vastly improving the bullpen that he neglected to upgrade the starting rotation at all. What good is the improved bullpen if the team can seldom hand them a lead to protect?

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Apr 23 2009 05:48 AM

IMO, Maine is the real issue. He suffers every bit as much as Perez in terms of being too inefficient and/or ineffective to work late into games, only unlike Perez, he's stopped mixing in the occasional gem.

It's been this way since Petersen was whacked, more or less.

Right now I feel better about L Hernandez going today than I do about the rest of them, after Johan that is.

Edgy DC
Apr 23 2009 07:18 AM
Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Apr 23 2009 07:34 AM

I think none of them are the issue. Two runs wins few games.

Frayed Knot
Apr 23 2009 07:31 AM

Yes, but the starting pitching has been more consistently lacking than the offense (last night not-withstanding).
3 starters have ERAs over 7.00

Maine last night
1st inning: leadoff walk - 1 run scores
2nd inning: one-out walk - none scored
3rd inning: leadoff walk (pitcher) - 2 runs score
4th inning: one-out walk - 2 runs score
5th inning: 1-2-3 inning
6th inning: leadoff single - leaves w/2 out & bases loaded

It's positively Oliver-esque !!

And, in answer to my own question somewhere in this thread:
No, Piniero did not have any strikeouts the entire game.

Edgy DC
Apr 23 2009 07:43 AM

They'll all have good stretches and bad stretches, and three of them aren't starting well. It's rare to have all five firing on all cylanders at once.

I know they'll finish better than seven, just like I know Santana, Stokes, and Rodriguez will finish worse than where they are.

We take the notion that some guys will be up while others are down on offense better than we do with pitching, because with eight guys out there on offense every day, it's easier to see it evening out. While I'd love to see Maine/Perez/Pelfrey get straight, what will help to see the balance is more O.

The big problem of the pitching failures to me is the strain it puts on the pen. That's compounded, I think, by the modern propensity to still pull starters after seven innings even if they are dominating. It used to be that a 15-inning game would cook the pen for 2-3 days running. Now, any extra-innng game does.

Putz and Feliciano have gone out there way too often already. Putz has fried his arm from overuse before.
