IGT, 4/27 Fish Fry: Sanchez v. Maine

HahnSolo

Anibal Sanchez and John Maine face off in a rematch of the game on April 10, won by the Marlins 5-4.

Here's a vote for a day off for David Wright.

Have at it.

Wright can have Thursday off , wish I was going tonight , it's just about as perfect a day as you can get for a game.

Except that Santana's not pitching.

Maine's going to put it all together tonight.

Here's to 7 in a row for the Fishies.

No Johan shouldn't be a problem... for tonight, at least; Maine generally handles the Fish (3 wins/1 loss, 2.85 ERA/0.95 WHIP, 11.41 K/9 over 7 career starts). Tomorrow is the matchup-- Nolasco versus Livan-- about which to worry... and, coincidentally, the one April game I'm attending.

Here's to 9 in a row for the Fishies!

Per Metsblog:

Fernando Tatis will bat second and start at second base tonight, while Gary Sheffield will bat sixth and start in left field for Daniel Murphy.

Omir Santos will once again start at catcher and bat eighth.

I fear the Fish. Mostly because of that six-game losing streak. Statistically, they're not likely to keep that going because I don't think they're as bad as that seems.

WTF is it with Ramon Castro , three games in a row that Santos is starting, is Castro injured ?

I think he just sucks. I don't think he's very valued in the organization and they are giving Santos every opportunity to win the backup catcher position for when Schneid comes back this weekend.

Apr 27 2009 02:14 PM

Oh yeah I'm with you , my question was rhetorical in nature . This was once again an opportunity for Castro to lay claim to the starting job but once again he's rooted to the bench . Guys a loser.

clearly, and much to my dismay, his inability to start regularly is being proven.

Mets must be desperate to get Tatis' bat in the lineup.
I don't think Tatis and Murphy have started on the same day yet, but if they did which one would play 2B? and if the Mets are willing to put Tatis at 2B why wouldnt they be willing to play Murphy there (hes played there in the minors and is clearly not ready yet in left field). Of course Castillo has been hot so far this year so I wouldn't be looking to steal his ABs just yet, but its something to think about when he cools off.

My sense is that Tatis is ahead of Murphy on the second base depth chart.

Update per Metsblog:

Carlos Delgado is a late scratch from tonight’s lineup with pain in his hip.

Instead, Tatis will start at first base, with Luis Castillo starting at second.

I guess Sheff bats cleanup now? Oh, Maine...you best be at your best tonight.

Maybe, but if they're both in the lineup, the question becomes forced.

I think they wanted to avoid Muffy at second because of, right or wrong, controversy that might generate. With Castillo excelling, hopefully that wouldn't be an issue.

I'd play Murphy all over at this point in his career --- first, second, third, and left.

Just as big as the grand slam so far was Maine going out there and shutting the door this inning.

Sad/funny thing? I was fully expecting-- calmly, not annoyed-- a lazy fly or ground out from Santos right there. The grand slam felt good... but almost alien, like something we just don't do here.

Suddenly, all the Mets pitchers are turning it around. Well, almost...

Edgy DC

That's what we need to do with the right center alley --- line triples into it rather than flying to the track.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Apr 27 2009 07:02 PM

i'd have liked to have seen them tear up Sanchez a little more once they'd wounded him. Little to lose by getting into the bullpen in Game 1 of a series.

Edgy DC
Apr 27 2009 07:03 PM

By the way, I'm ag'in' lifting Maine there. I'd at least let him give up a baserunner in the seventh before lifting him. Cut the pen some slack.

metsguyinmichigan

Maine to Ollie: Dumbass. THIS is how you're supposed to pick up your team.

Edgy DC

I like triples.

I don't think Maine is in a position to call anybody a dumbass.

As Gary keeps reminding us....that's eight triples and eleven home runs for the Mets this season.....I love how CF is playing so far.

Took the family out for ice cream, after the first, and came back in the 6th without missing anything major. Sweet deal for me.

I don't mean to be Bobby Bringdown here, but even when this team wins going away it can be hard to watch. A four-pitcher 2-hitter? An opposing starter getting tagged for 6 in the first and then getting away with 5 scoreless?

Sheesh. I wanted to kill myself seeing Putz and Rodriguez throw those 10-minute innings.

Not only going to your pen there when you don't have to ("to get a guy out on a positive") but going to your top three relievers.

Rodriguez hadn't pitched since Friday , if that means anything. I thought jerry should have sent Maine out for the seventh.

Edgy DC
Apr 28 2009 06:56 AM

So he "needed to get his work in." Did all three of their top bullpen options so need?

I hope so because the alternative reason(getting the guy a positive) makes little sense to me. I f he wanted to get Johnny some good vibes then send him back out there.

="metirish"]Rodriguez hadn't pitched since Friday , if that means anything. I thought jerry should have sent Maine out for the seventh.

Not only that, but we'll be seeing it a bit more-- apparently, Jerry's got a gotta-work-the-gaskets guy re: the endgame guys (not in high-leverage/non-save situations, mind you, but "just because"). From Friday's press conf:

"For not having been on the mound for the number of days (Rodriguez) missed, his velocity was higher than I have seen before. When a guy feels that strong, he’s not as commanding as he would like to be."

Is it possible to include a bullpen-management aptitude test when this club next hires a manager?

Edgy DC
Apr 28 2009 07:09 AM

Well, the idea is to get him out while the positive is still a positive. There's a benefit to that, but I think well too much of is made of it when you won't send a guy out there with a five run lead. Let him give up a runner or so before pulling him and letting him exit to applause.

Six innings and 94 pitches is not a workday. Pitching well but exiting with a third of the game to play is scarcely getting your job done.

He lasted no longer than the guy who gave up a hex in the first inning.

I also think that's defensible. It's not like every other manager won't throw a low-leverage inning to his closer if he's had three days off, but, again, I just think Manuel wll overdid it here.
