IGT, May 1: Mets @ Phils

John Cougar Lunchbucket
May 01 2009 01:58 PM

Just as I suspected, Delgado is not in the starting lineup. Neither is Castillo or Castro.

Reyes, ss
Cora, 2b
Murphy, lf
Beltran, cf
Wright, 3b
Church, rf
Tatis, 1b
Santos, c
Pelfrey, rhp

I'm going to come out and advocate for some retroactive DL placements. Short benches suck.

Benjamin Grimm
May 01 2009 02:02 PM

I'll renew my call for the 27-man roster.

Hopefully Delgado and/or Castillo will at least be available to pinch hit.

Chan Ho Park pitching for the bad guys.

Is Delgado on the DL or " day to day" and in a weeks time when he is still not right he then will go on the DL.

I don't disagree strongly, but you said the same thing the other day yet Cora went out and had a very good day at the plate.

... which makes it likelier than usual that Cora will suck today. Not a good thing because Cora usually sucks, anyway.

The writers are tweeting that Delgado might go on the DL. I looked at the Buffalo roster to see who might get called up. Yeesh--no wonder they are 2-16. Nick Evans is hitting .102 (3 HR out of his 6 hits).

So what are the odds Cora gets on base in his next at-bat, being that he walked his first time up? He's due for some out-making.

Zvon
May 01 2009 05:21 PM

We should have scored more here in the 1st.
Chan Ho Park looked like he wanted to be anywhere but Citizens Band Park.
Then he gets the DP from Church.
Dagnabbitt.

I'll Take the 2.

Lets see some pitching Pelf.

Beltran to me looks impossibly slow, Jeez.

Nice tag by Carlos on a short fly to right makes it 5-0.

Its just he looks slow to the human eye.

I thought Beltran looked slow there too. But I was glad to see him using proper sliding form.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
May 01 2009 06:05 PM

I know he's one of those guys who doesn;t appear like he's moving hard when he's moving a lot, but watch that replay and see how long it takes him to really accelerate. His 0-to-60 looked sluggish, let;s put it that way.

metsguyinmichigan

Zvon
May 01 2009 06:13 PM

Gotta get out of this Pelf.

Gwreck
May 01 2009 06:14 PM

Tough spot with Ibanez up and bases loaded. If Pelfrey wants to put some guys on, ok, but man up and get the out here, thanks.

John Cougar Lunchbucket

If it was Burrell he'd have hit it over the fence.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
May 01 2009 06:19 PM

Top of the order coming up. Gotta keep scoring.

Zvon
May 01 2009 06:19 PM

A frakin broken bat single plates 2.

I was just jokin about Beltran. He always looks slow as shit to me...or, not in high gear. Like he feels 100% is not needed. Very rarely do I think he's goin all out, in the field and on the bases.

Look at that.
The runner goes and Feliz hits it in the vacated hole.
ugh.

Zvon

Yep.
Gotta answer right back.

I get the Phils feed here.

Re: Beltran running home, I thought at the time to myself, "why isn't he in
more of a hurry?" He's lost a step a little, I don't think he's slow yet. It's like
in the outfield, he seems to know how fast and how much energy to use to
get where he has to be to get whatever done. I'm not forgetting the nice
bounce so otherwise he mighta been out. Ahh, never mind.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
May 01 2009 06:36 PM

HUGE pickoff there.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
May 01 2009 06:37 PM

Plef helping himself with the bat and the pickoff. That really wrecked what I was sure was about to be the game-tying rally we all know is coming.

If you couple the ginger running to the lack of sliding you might think he's more concerned with
not getting hurt than he is with playing the game, and that's a bad place for a player with his tools to be.

Its like with Perez, in a way.
I think some players consider some games more important than others, and I don't agree with that.
I think every game is important, whether it be april, sept, vs the Phils or the worst team in the league.

Nice pick off as Pelf erases J-Roll.

And Beltran doubles to open the Mets 5th

I hope Pelfrey has an easy inning here. He's already thrown 81 pitches. I can imagine Jerry leaving a struggling Pelfrey in too long in order to get the five innings.

One. Two. Three. And then try to get him to pitch the sixth, too.

That's not for me to say. Ask him.

I can only speculate, as I have.

But if you play the game and the balls arriving
at a base when you are, you slide.
And he slid that time.

Yay!

Benjamin Grimm
May 01 2009 07:09 PM

Through 5 innings, Pelfrey's thrown 95 pitches.

Six is the most we'll get out of him. He'll get more Schaefer from me if he finishes six.

(He'll get something for the hitting regardless.)

That so?
Or a FC?

That was quick thinking by Reyes to try at third after the bobble.

seawolf17
May 01 2009 07:27 PM

Nice. A goose egg on the scoreboard for Pedro.

Gary: "If Coste breaks for the plate right away, I think he makes it."

Yes, he does, because I don't think there was anyone covering home plate, unless Feliciano was there. Stuttering gave Santos time to get back into position, and Dobbs' bad decision exacerbated the situation.

Absolutely. Lots of ways for the Mets to screw that up, but the Phillies just screwed it up worse.

And yes, that's definitely an error on Reyes, because it allowed Coste to reach third.

THOUGHTS ON THE GAME!!!!

(only kidding)

- I can't believe Utley's HR left the park. Looked like a jam-job pop fly to me.

- That Chinese fire-drill of a play was obviously huge. Someone said that the throw was a foot from sailing over Reyes's leap and two runs insta-Philly runs but did you notice that both Beltran & either Church or Cora were backing up and in perfect position for any overthrow?
Nice group effort there.

- Re: Beltran tagging and his slow start: I think he was sort of reading how Werth fielded that ball and was ready to slam on the brakes if he didn't like how it was developing.
But going all out was the right move there. I sometimes wonder about Beltran's instincts. He'll make 10 smart plays and then throw in a real klunker.

I'll tellya what. He's not gonna make anyone forget Edgardo Alfonzo but I like him as a reserve so far.

He's made plays in the field in these past few games that Damian Easley could only dream of making. And he's not much more than a singles hitter offensively but he appears to have an idea of what he's doing up there, unlike, say, David Newhan or something.

That was Cora who made the leap. He was heads-up the whole play and did everything right.

That's right, it was Cora cuz Reyes was in the hole.
But Beltran was directly in line for an overthrow and Church was right behind him. Nice sign even if it never came into play.

From various player-written or ghosted books and interviews over the yeats, being called "professional" by another can mean any or all of:
Works hard
Hustles
Doesn't complain or call out his manager
Doesn't make mental mistakes - at bat, in the field or on the basepaths
In the field, wants the ball to be hit at him
Wouldn't say "Shit" if he had a mouthful (direct quote - Bouton or Brosnan books)
