I Have a Theory

Perhaps it's beacuse your pitching SUCKS.

When they decided to build the new Yankee Stadium, the Bombers wanted everything to be picture-perfect. From pristine clubhouses to wide concourses to the new Monument Park, the Bombers' new palace was designed to put every other ballpark to shame. Most important, the dimensions of the field were the same as they were at the remodeled Stadium, from the deep walls in left-center and center to the short porch in right. So why is the new Yankee Stadium already being called Coors Field East? The first four games at the Yankees' new cathedral saw 20 home runs hit by the Yankees and Indians, a total matched in just four of 84 seasons at the old park. According to a Yankees official, engineers performed a wind study during construction of the new ballpark that showed there would be no noticeable difference between the two fields, so this weekend's numbers clearly caught the team by surprise. The team is planning another study, but it remains to be seen whether the results will clear things up.

Coors Field East it's being called.

Cashman on the study that was done.

] "They didn't indicate anything about rightfield the way they're talking, the way it's playing right now," Cashman said. "I can tell you that." "There was nothing in the study that indicated the ball would be jumping to rightfield," Cashman said. "There was a curiosity about leftfield, to be honest, over time, once the old stadium came down, whether that would have an effect or not on the balls carrying to left. But nothing to rightfield. There was no indication that this [stadium] would play any different than the other ballpark."

My theory is that the MFYs have been skidding into a slow-motion wreck for years.

They've screwed up almost everything they've touched for two years now, and they're just gonna live with it while Santana pitches for the Mets, Torre manages the Dodgers, their association as the destination for steroid users grows, their new stadium becomes a national joke not only for its dimensions but its unsold seats, their vaunted prospects turn out to be alcoholics and minor leaguers, the old guard who won't let anyone forget 1998 gets older and more humorless all the time, their asskiss network loses all their best talent and are left only with sycophant loudmouths like Kay and clowns like Sterling, and a new generation of Steinbrenners prove every bit the pompous embarrassing blowhards as the last one.

Amen.

Was in SF for a bachelor-party weekend, and caught the Randy Johnson game on Sunday. Great day, great park... but the Doc thing was eating at my insides like a million orders of Gilroy fries. The only thing that helped was the fact that the MFYS II freakout seemed to resonate nationally, to the delight of all the (Giants/'Zona) fans with whom I chatted. It was like schadenfreude herbal tea.

People seem to forget that their '90s dynasty was built while Steinbrenner was suspended from baseball and unable to trade guys like Jeter and Rivera. He gets all the credit for building that team but the reality is that it was Gene Michael who grew those guys and brought them up.

By the time King George was back in power, the 'core' of those teams was well on its way to establishing itself and any moron would've known enough to keep them together.

In short it was the opposite of the Streinbrenner era Yankee philosophy that got them to that point. As a Mets fan its been nice to see them revert to their pre-Howie Spira tendencies.

A little respect for Bob Watson is also due.

The idea that a 50-year-old George clone could suddenly appear and promise two more generations of humilation for any remaining entitled narciscist Yankee fans just seemed too much to hope for. but Hanky has turned into the gift that keeps giving.

That they set the stage for their new home to be declared the greatest erection ever achieved, and had enough media pull to completely control the angle, only to find the story undermined from within, well, that's a month of Christmases right there.

You mean there's more to the Yankees sucking than the Yankees sucking?

Music to my ears. Best post of the season so far, I'd think.

Not at all disconnected. Think they wouldn't give up Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy at this very moment for Johan? Think they wouldn't wash their hands of Joba Chamberlain, the only setup man inducted into the Hall of Fame after a week in the bigs?

We may overestimate our prospects, but we knew enough to not hold to four of them when Johan was available. Come to think of it, Alomar may have sucked, but we didn't let Alex Escobar stand in our way.

(Mind you I won't let these examples get in the way of bitching at the next Met prospect who blossomed upon being traded, but JCL's MFY point stands: they suck.)

When I saw this thread I immediately thought of the musical episode of Buffy. That's about as non-baseball as it gets.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Yankee bashing.

I wonder if they made the same mistake judging the wind that they did when they planned Candlestick Park.
