Should the Mets send Murphy to Buffalo?

Apparently, one scout thinks so--from Adam Rubin's blog:

A National League scout who watched the Mets this weekend against the Nationals said the consesus among his brethren is that Daniel Murphy belongs at Triple-A Buffalo. The scout quickly noted that Murphy should head to the minors for a defined period of time, no more than two or three weeks, and that it should be explained that it isn't a punishment. It merely would be a period of time to learn the outfield in a pressure-free environment. The scout suggested Murphy's hitting (one homer) isn't enough to offset his fielding liabilities right now.

The scout applauded all the early work Murphy is doing in the outfield, but he also observed that coach Razor Shines wasn't hitting the balls from home plate. The practice flies were just lofting, and didn't have the same movement that in-game liners have. Murphy's instinct is to turn to the gap on fly balls, and he's been falling trying to spin when the balls cut or slice toward the line, depending on if it's a righty or lefty batting.

Jerry Manuel and Murphy acknowledged that Murphy is chasing balls above the strike zone, but the scout described it in a little deeper detail. He said the word is out that the way to attack Murphy is to throw cutters and other fastballs in on Murphy's hands, since Murphy has a wide, closed stance. The scout noted that Jordan Zimmermann did it with precision Sunday.

"The New York Mets deserve better," the scout said. "They have a big outfield and a big payroll. That's not a knock on Daniel Murphy. I love the kid. It's not like he's a home run threat every time he comes up. He's a doubles guy. It's not like they're getting the offense to overcome it."

It might not be a bad idea. We could live with Tatis or Sheffield out there for a few weeks.

I'd be fine with it

I don't know that he would learn anything down there that he couldn't learn up here , if Razor can't simulate good hard line drives at Murphy then they need to buy a machine that will churn them out all day from home plate. I'm sure they can be had and if not then find someone to make it.

True, but the difference is he'd be learning in Buffalo, not in the major leagues.

I wouldn't be opposed to it, but I prefer Edgy's idea of playing him all over the place and keeping him in the big leagues. Sending Murphy down would probably mean more Gary Sheffield, and I don't see a whole lot of upside in that. Sure, more power potential, but not a whole lot of improvement (if any) in the defense.

Was saying "Buffalo" last night while at the game when Murphy and LF came up. This is no place to learn his craft. I could deal with some combination of Sheffield (who's stinging the ball) and Reed in left while Daniel gets the hang of fly balls that don't count in the NL standings.

You know, .313 / .366 / .422 // .788 isn't bad in my book. It's better than they're getting out of Reyes or Wright right now.

As far as it getting around that he's vulnerable to hard stuff in on his hands, he tripled on an inside slider in his only at-bat last night.

It's hard to get through this, but any degree of perspective suggests he's not going to commit a catastrophic error every night. He certainly didn't last year.

I certainly think there might be something to the idea that fungoes don't imitate game hits well enough to school him, but I don't see Buffalo as the solution to that.

I'm in favor of sending the kid down to learn how to properly field his new position.

I personally think he is what he is and 2 weeks at AAA is not going to further his development any further. He played 50-some games last year in the outfield without making a huge ass of himself. Additionally, is he really going to be the long-term solution in left field for us?

IMO, either he will vie with Evans for first base next season or he will be traded and his defense (3B, OF, elsewhere) will be someone else's problem.

Can we hire this scout while we're at it?

I'm in favor of giving him 150 at-bats and if he's hitting respectably, let him learn here. He's about the O so you gotta see what you can expect offensively first.

You have to consider it, I think, but I'd give him some more time up here first before I'd decide it's necessary.

Yeah..more for the idea of learning 2B if possible...Sheff in left & Murphy at 2B for the rest of his life

The odds of Murphy "learning" 2nd base are very slim.
