Know Thy Defending Champs

Time for the first three games against the 2-time defending NL East champs, and the defending World Champs, in their house.

1B Ryan Howard
Not to be confused with the character played by B.J. Novak on NBC’s The Office.
Batting .288 with 4 homers and 15 RBI on the season.

2B Chase Utley
Having another strong season, .342 average, 7 homeruns and 20 RBI

3B Pedro Feliz
Batting .323 so far, 2 homers and 14 RBI

SS Jimmie Rollins
Not getting off to a great start at all, and was benched for Wednesday’s game against Washington, .207 average with 1 homer and 6 RBI

LF Raul Ibanez
Signed a three year contract with the Phillies after putting up three straight 100 RBI seasons in Seattle, and essentially replaces Met Killer Pat Burrell on the Phillie roster. Currently sporting a .359 average, 7 homers and 17 RBI

CF Shane Victorino
The Flying Hawaiian, hitting .286 so far, with 3 homers and 15 RBI

RF Jayson Werth
Batting .260 with 2 homers and 10 RBI

C Chris Coste
Will be starting in the place of injured Carlos Ruiz. Hitting .175 with 0 homers and 4 RBI

The Probable Pitchers:

Friday Night, Mike Pelfrey against Chan Ho Park who is 0-0 through 4 games and 3 starts with a 7.16 ERA.

Saturday in the Fox Friendly 3:40 slot, Oliver Perez will get another shot against the ageless Jamie Moyer, who is in his 23rd season of MLB and sports a 3-1 record with a 5.09 ERA

Sunday afternoon, traditional 1:35 start will see John Maine take the hill against Joe Blantonwho is 0-2 with an 8.41 ERA.

Starters that the Mets should miss will be Cole Hamels, who rolled his ankle on Wednesday against the Nationals, but is hopeful to make the start against the Cardinals in St. Louis on Monday. Hamels is actually scheduled to do a bullpen session before Friday’s game in fact. This year has not been a good one for the World Series MVP, as he is 0-2 with a 7.27 ERA. The Mets also miss Brett Myers this series, who is 1-2 with a 4.83 ERA so far.

On the Bench the Phillies have:
INF Eric Bruntlett
INF Miguel Cairo
INF Greg Dobbs
OF Matt Stairs
C Lou Marson

And in the pen behind Brad Lidge, who like Hamels is also coming down to earth somewhat this year, 0-1 with a 7.27 ERA and also hampered by inflammation in his right knee, are;

Clay Condrey Chad Durbin Scott Eyre J.A. Happ Ryan Madson Jack Taschner

Ex Mets are Park and Cairo, as well as former Met coach Sam Perlozzo will be manning the coaching lines at third on Charlie Manuel’s staff.

Mets who were Phillies
Well ex-Met Marlon Anderson, and recently designated and resigned to Buffalo Nelson Figueroa spent time with the Phillies. Anderson from 1998-2002 and Figueroa in 2001.

Well played Mr. Rogers.

I like the idea of missing Myers and Hamels, and getting a whack at Blanton, Moyer and Park all of whom have been very hittable this year so far.

Should be a slugfest weekend.

Keep in mind that the Mets haven't beaten Moyer since 1972.

Perhaps, but they were 22-9 against him before that.

Why I was looking for pictures of Moyer is anyones guess , but I came across this.....some guys blog

Tuesday, 01/24/06 I don't write about baseball much, but I'm a great admirer of 43-year-old Mariner pitcher Jamie Moyer. His ability to make hitters barely half his age look silly with the slowest average fastball in all of baseball is an athletic achievement so unusual that it provokes astonished laughter. His 21-win season in 2003 was beautifully automatic -- I'd make time to watch his games with a serene confidence that he'd figure out a way to prevail, serene confidence being a wholly foreign concept in baseball. His local philanthropy and total lack of observable assholery are just icing on the cake. I bring this up because, though Moyer is widely acknowledged to be an unusually old man for an active pitcher, it wasn't until I saw the 1933 King Kong last month that I realized just how old he really is. In the first scene after returning from Skull Island, Ann Darrow and Driscoll are being peppered with questions. You can't tell me the reporter standing between them isn't Jamie Moyer. Conservatively estimating that he was 35 when the movie was made, he is inescapably not 43 today, but 108 years old.

IMDB does list a Ray Moyer for uncredited set design on King Kong, but he has no actor credits across his whole long career, while King Kong's entry is already stuffed with uncredited appearances. So, I'm sticking with my theory that Jamie is the oldest professional athlete in the history of the world. He'll still be pitching for the Mariners when the great Felix Hernandez starts leaving his teeth in a glass of water at night.

I've made two not so difficult predictions this year that have come true -

I said that the Mets would not win the third game against Nats rookie Jordan Zimmerman and I predicted that the Met bats would come to life and John Maine would pitch well against the Marlins. Both were stated on the pages of this forum (you could look 'em up).

My third prediction for this young season is that the band box-like confines of Citizens Bank Park will be the cure for what's ailing the Mets. They will rock the park (and the Park) tonight while Pelfrey coaxes groundball out after groundball out from the Phillies.
