IGT, May 2: Mets @ Phils

John Cougar Lunchbucket
May 01 2009 09:04 PM

Sorry, starting this one early since I gotta be on the road Saturday.

With Moyer going, I'd expect Castillo and Delgado continue to take the days off. Hopefully Ollie is adequate, that's all I ask.

In the event my winning streak continues I nominate MetIrish to pick up the IGT mojo for Sunday's IGT, since I'll prolly miss the game start on that one too.

Is it Ollie today? For some reason I was thinking it would be Maine.

I'll gladly start the IGT Sunday....

Cone on Ollie

I wish Cone would get off of Ollie. He has a game to pitch.

Who's doing color for FOX?

Dammit. I got all my yard work done by 3:30 so I could come in and watch the Mets. And instead we get the Tigers and Indians.

GYC

Damnit, Ollie.

Two first basemen?

metsguyinmichigan
May 02 2009 02:00 PM

I hope Ollie's new bride will adjust well as she moves from Manhattan to BUFFALO! Get his butt out of there! Tell me Jerry's got someone warming up already.

bmfc1
May 02 2009 02:02 PM

After last Sunday, did we really need to give Perez another start? I know he was successful against the Phillies last year but that's not a good reason to waste today's game.

metsguyinmichigan
May 02 2009 02:05 PM

Lucky to get out of that with only two runs. We're gonna have to score a lot today.

Kong76
May 02 2009 02:05 PM

Eight men bat, they got two, but left 'em loaded.
Bad Ollie, go shave that stupid looking beard NOW!!!

GYC
May 02 2009 02:06 PM

Well, he worked with Johan and Warthen, and they had apparently found a
mechanical error with his delivery. But that doesn't seem to be fixing shit.

metsguyinmichigan
May 02 2009 02:20 PM

Castro and Ollie get hits, and Reyes feebly pops out with the bases full. Grr.

Kong76
May 02 2009 02:50 PM

It's raining bases on balls.

Great move Omar, giving Perez another start. Keep walking Ollie, all the way to Brooklyn for all I care.

Benjamin Grimm

Can we get Oliver Perez to put on a Phillies cap? We can bribe him with pulled pork.

I have to admit that I forgot that Takahashi was an available Met.

I don't blame Omar for the lineup card.

Great bailout by Takahashi.

Kong76
May 02 2009 03:37 PM

Well yeah, and if you're gonna shout at Omar in an IGT ya might as well
shout about the contract and not the start anyways.

But that's another thread.

Nice to see Takahashi more or less stop the bleeding. Bats still sleeping.

Scott Eyre pitching like Jane

(and who doesn't like a little literary humor on a Saturday afternoon?)

Something I never thought I'd say: when Eyre walked Reyes, I said that I rather have Castillo up.

If Reed was the pinch runner, maybe he beats the throw.

Edgy DC
May 02 2009 04:43 PM

Jeez, I went out to do yard work and nobody posted since then.

Five-five in the ninth. Good game here as Wright walks with one out.

Edgy DC
May 02 2009 04:50 PM

Amazing that Castro ended up getting pulled anyhow.

Kong76
May 02 2009 04:50 PM

bm: If Reed was the pinch runner, maybe he beats the throw. <<<

Unless Reed was going to catch there's no point in burning two players when
I think they're down to like one guy left on the bench (maybe two).

Kong76
May 02 2009 04:52 PM

Between your man crush on Castro and us all voting too high for starting
pitching in the Shaefer thingie, you're on a bad roll this week.

bmfc1
May 02 2009 04:55 PM

You have a valid point about not using two players but I don't have any sort of crush on Castro--I just thought that Jerry handled the situation badly on Wed.

Sorry, the second post is to The Edgemeister.

Oh, I don't feel one way or another about Castro, although his huge mandible blows my mind. I just find the situation fascinating.

Don't forget my pissing into the wind about Manuel's hook.

How about that Cora?

Kong76

Cora in the middle of things again. The booth sings praise.

Reyes needs to put down a better bunt than that if we're going to play winning baseball. What's so hard about squaring up and putting one down?

In DC, the HD signal on FOX has disappeared. What about in NY?

Leadoff guys often do this. Their instinct is to bunt for hits or to knock it foul.

Maddening, I know.

Edgy DC
May 02 2009 05:17 PM

Yes, I'd have come out with Rodriguez instead of Green. Get out of save-mode, Jerry.

Benjamin Grimm
May 02 2009 05:37 PM

As I was watching Putz pitch, I was thinking, well, they still have Green in the pen if they want to quickly end the game.

He might as well wear Heilman's number. He's going to be seen in the same light.

I was sure Rodriguez would pitch the tenth. I was wrong.

Edgy DC

That wasn't Jerry's act last year, I think. He saved the closer for the save on the road... at least, he did when he had a closer.

Fman99
May 02 2009 07:33 PM

Well that sucked. Just handing over the game and all.

Uh, boo.

GYC
May 02 2009 09:07 PM

I thought Jerry said earlier this year that he wasn't going to manage to the
save stat. I though I remember him saying that he fell victim to the closer's
role and the save stat while a manager in Chicago. Did he actually say this,
or am I completely losing my mind / dreaming big? Like, I did a quick search
and can't find evidence, but I'd swear I read it somewhere. If he did say it,
he was full of shit.

Frayed Knot
May 03 2009 05:56 AM

IIRC, the 'not managing for the save stat' remark came in answer to a question of whether he would hesitate to use Putz in a "closer's situation" even though it would cost Rodriguez a few. He said nothing about his willingness to use both closers in the tricky 'tie game on the road' situation - one that managers apparently feel will leave them vulnerable to the ridicule which comes from having to close a game with a guy not pre-screened for such hazardous duty.

Edgy DC
May 03 2009 06:18 AM

Instead he ends up in a tie game with someone less capable of bringing home the win.

Deliberately. Stop the insanity.

Benjamin Grimm
May 03 2009 06:46 AM

It really is crazy.

I guess there have also been times when the Mets have benefited from this kind of insanity, since the opposing managers also manage this way. So it probably evens out. But I'd like our manager to be smarter than the other guy, so that the Mets win more than their share of games.

After Putz I would have gone with Rodriguez, then Stokes, for as long as he'd hold out, and then Green.
