Get out of town! (OoTS: Week of May 4-8)

Trying a weekday OoTS thread, since it might be silly to have a different 3-post long thread every day. If it's a dumb idea, ignore it and make another one tomorrow. It's all good.

Zack Greinke has been spotted a 3-run lead in KC, but probably doesn't even need all of it, because he's cruising through the White Sox lineup right now. 5 innings, 2 hits, 7 K, 0 BB. Season ERA down to 0.44. He's in his own world right now, a statement which used to have an entirely different meaning when applied to him.

Blanton's got twice that in St. Louis for those Phuckers, behind jacks by Werth (2-run) and Howard (GS). After loading 'em with one down in the 6th, the bottom of the Cards does its best Mets impression, stranding everybody.

After 6, it's 6-1, the red-wearing guys we like less.

Reds and Marlins in extras in Florida thanks to Cantu flying out w/the bags loaded & 2 outs in the 9th

Finally underway in NYC (yeah that'll end before 1AM) 2-0 Sawx early on

Through 7 and a half at Kaufman Stadium.

Greinke: 8 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 10 K, 0 BB.

3-0 Royals.

Greinke completes his 2nd shutout and 3rd complete game of the season. Royals crowd was LOUD, playoff loud, for every pitch in that last inning.

I'd really like to see KC make a deep run this season.

Rick Ankiel ran head-first into the outfield wall. If he goes on the DL, he will be my eighth player on the DL this year and the seventh still on it in my money fantasy league: B.J. Upton (returned), Justin Duchscherer, Chien-Ming Wang (now dropped), Ricky Romero (now dropped), Brian McCann, Edwin Encarnacion and Stephen Drew. Jason Bartlett and Dan Uggla have also been hurt lately but both returned to their lineups yesterday.

Boo fantasy updates.

All this talk about Greinke has made me realize that "Zack" is one of those words that just looks really odd in print.

BoSox putting up a picket fence over the first 4 innings on Phil Hughes and the Yanx: 1 - 1 - 1 - 1
Lester has struck out 7 MFYs so far

Marlins & Reds in the 12th, still tied.

Maybe Ankiel would have missed the wall if there had been a picture of home plate on it.

The Ankiel film was pretty scary-looking.

Marlins finally won in the 14th inning but on a bullshit (non) call - so no ground gained on 1st place last night.

1st & 2nd/no outs in bottom 14:
- Cantu hits a perfect GiDP ball but a slight bobble makes the throw to 2nd a bit late.
- This allows runner Hanley Ramirez to take out the SS but with a slide that was nowhere near the base.
- So the throw goes wide and the runner from 2nd comes around to score the winner.

The right call there not only makes both runners out but sends the other guy back to 2nd base. Marlins still would have had one more shot at it but jeez blue, we know you're tired and want to get back to the hotel but Hanley wasn't within 5 feet of reaching 2nd.

That made me laugh. Remember that game? Holy moly.

Ankeil flashed the thumbs-up as the stretcher went off the field, reminding me of a time when Lee Mazzilli did the same thing once. I remember thinking that Maz was somewhat embarrassed to be put on a stretcher and the injury couldn't have been that bad since he looked like he wanted to get up off it and walk to the dugout.

What I don't recall was when this happened and how he got injured. I imagine a collison with another player. Anyone?

In 1979, Mazzilli was taken off the field in a stretcher after colliding with Dan Norman in Los Angeles, while chasing Davey Lopes' fly ball. Maz was out cold for a few minutes; Lopes was able to round the bases and score on an inside the park HR.

This game was played shortly after the 1979 All Star Game.

Nats bullpen barfs on yet another late inning lead in a matinee today against Houston.

Those guys suck.

Those Nats don't have an edge.

It could take them years to get out of the mess Bowden made.

They should hire Bobby V and give him complete control of baseball operations.

Looks like Houston scored 5 over the 7th, 8th & 9th innings ... but the Nats score [u:a92b7383f6]eight[/u:a92b7383f6] over that same span including 2 in bottom 9th to send it to extras.

Tied at 10 heading for the 11th

Houston led 5-2 until the 6th, with Oswalt cruising.

He got pulled after allowing two baserunners, at which point Chris Sampson proceeded to allow an RBI single, then walk the park to the tune of 3 runs.

Rain delay in the bottom of the 11th, with Elijah "I may hit 3 HRs today, or I may just shoot a man" Dukes on first and 1 out.

Frayed Knot

Oswalt pulled with some kind of "bone bruise" on hand.
Game called due to rain - will resume next time the teams get together (in Houston I believe) and pick up where they left off: tied in bottom 11 with a runner on and none out.

Due to injury, Jacoby Ellsbury is replaced by Jonathan Van Every. Sounds like the Southampton polo report.

Rays destroying Boston. (Longoria-- 2-3 with a HR, 2B and BB, 4 RBI-- is just plain frightening.) Tim McCarver destroying the notion "Tim McCarver is a prepared, professional baseball color man" (weird Manny-rant non sequitur earlier, plus statements of non-factual fact-- "the Red Sox only made one move this offseason").

Assuming the MFYs will recover (probable) and the Jays stay viable (given their neverending young-pitching assembly-line, more possible than you might think), the AL East race could resemble Revelations come September.

Greinke finally loses a game, in one of those efforts that proves W-L to be a futile measure. 8 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, 5 K, 0 BB. Royals were shutout by Joe Saunders and the Angels.
