IGT - Philthies @ Mets, 5/6/09

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr

Reyes .......... SS
Cora ............ 2B
Beltran .......... CF
Delgado ........ 1B
Wright .......... 3B
Murphy ......... LF
Reed ........... RF
Santos ......... C
Santana ........ LHP

Nothing from the Phils just yet, but Utley's likely sitting out, due to his widdle biddy foot bruise.

A couple of questions suggest themselves:

1) How much less run support can a defensive-replacement-infested lineup provide for the NL Pitcher of the Month?

2) If you're resting Church, why do it with someone so flyball-y as Johan? And no Sheff?

3) If Murph hit Park hard last time 'round (HR, couple of lineouts), why bat him sixth?

4) MANUEL:CORA-AS-'SECOND-HOLE-GUY'::
A) LOU DOBBS:THOSE DARN MEXICANS
B) NEW YORK SPORTSWRITERS:A-ROD
C) PETER KING:BRETT FAVRE
D) None of the above. You're reading too much into this. It's barely May, for Chrissakes.

Oh, and LGM?

Tweets from the media say maybe no F-Rod and JJ tonight so it's all you, Johan.

Also, Takahashi may not start on Friday:

Santana seems to be in fine form as he gets through a trouble-free first. Time to get Johan the run support he deserves.

Ron Darling extols the subtle virtues of being Alex Cora. According to Ron, Cora has intangibles. I like intangibles. I especially liked the intangibles Dwight Gooden had from about the middle of 1984 through the middle of 1986. Bernard Gilkey had some great intangibles in 1996 when he had one of the best Met seasons ever. And Tom Seaver has some set of intangibles also, throughout his entire Met career.

Wouldn't it be more efficient for the Mets to use up all of their runs when Ollie starts?

Terrible-- I mean, TERRIBLE-- jump by Wright trying to steal after a 1-out walk. You're f*cking out.

You too, Murph. On a pretty terrible nondescript breaker. (Slurve? Clider? Sludge?)

Back to you, Hombre. (Sigh.)

Zvon
May 06 2009 05:58 PM

I call him wicked and then he does something like walk a pitcher.
Well, he got out of it by getting that pesky Utley.

Over 50 pitches thrown now though, and we are only in the third.

Redemption for that first at-bat for Murph. Unfortunately, Reed's not as amends-making.

Nymr83
May 06 2009 07:20 PM

The problem with pinch-hitting for Santana and Park in those spots is that you've lost your pitcher (who was throwing well), not in exchange for a run, but in exchange for a 25% greater chance at a run (if you assume a .250 difference in BA between the pitcher you took out and the pinch hitter, which is being genrous when talking about Santana)

Elster88
May 06 2009 07:20 PM
Edited 1 time(s), most recently on May 06 2009 07:21 PM

Awful at-bat by Church. Durbin was all over the place against Tatis and Church goes up free swinging to get down in the count 0-2.

Once he had the two strikes it's harder to blame him for swinging at close pitches but at 2-2 he did foul off two more balls and swing and miss on a third.

As a Met fan, I hope you're right. But this reminds me of the Billy Martin anecdote when someone was praising the fast start of an historically bad ballplayer to the Yankee manager. Unimpressed, Martin replied that the player sucks, and that he'll be hitting his usual .230 by season's end.

Do you think Santana will leave his wife and family to enter into a gay relationship with another straight male?

Don't pretend you're not thinking the same thing, man.

The Santana gay thing? No.
The Mets looking for ways to blow it? Yes.

I know the Met offense is sputtering night in and night out, but man a 1-0 game is a pretty cool thing. On the edge of your seat with every single pitch. I'll continue take a pitcher's duel over a slugfest any day. That kind of game is to me, what baseball was meant to be.

-Was there last night for my first ever night game. Maybe its just me but the place seems a lot brighter than Shea was at night. Proud to say that I am now 1-2 at games at Citifield.

-Yes it was ugly visor night

-I do not recommend the Acela Club for dinner. Its a prix fixe kind of deal. $48 per person to start. $10 more per person if you want a seat that has views of the field. The prime rib is $5 extra. Side dishes are also $5 extra. The food isn't bad but the service is l-o-u-s-y. We sat at 5:30 and didn't walk out of there until 7:15, mostly due to waiting too long for food, drinks and the check.

Thanks for the heads up with the Acela Club , I was never going to go there but I'm definitely not now. Agree about a pitchers duel over a slugfest , that was a fun game to watch.

Santana is a genius.

I think if you want to hang out there in bad weather or during a rain delay and just have a drink and watch the game its fine, but I won't have dinner there again any time soon.

Too much good food to be had elsewhere in the park.

Walked through the Caesar's Club on my way to my seats after dinner (I don't think my tix gave me access to it, but no one seemed to be checking). Nice, spacious but no views of the field! WTF? Are you coming to a game to watch the game on the field or are you coming to hang out in a bar and watch it on a flat screen? Why come and spend the $$ if you're going to spend your time in there? That I do not get.

One other observation - Loud Phillie fans all over the place at the beginning of the game - didn't seem to notice or hear them as much after their team made 3 errors and blew the game. Strange.

Listening to Johan talk after the game last night I got the feeling that while he would like more offense he seems to know that when he pitches he's got to be great , it's like his burden and he's accepted it.

What a great game. Between the Phillies propensity for comebacks, and Rodriguez's propensity for baserunners, I couldn't bear to watch the ninth inning. Instead, I watched the Celtics-Orlando game and kept flipping back to see the outs tick up on the scroll. Great job all around last night.

Santana is really, really good.

I'm with you on this, and was thinking the same sort of thing, but then they flashed his stats for the year and it had an OBP of .412 and an average of .310 something and it occured to me that if that's how he's going to produce -- for now, at least -- I'm fine with him hitting 2nd occasionally.

And that player was... ?

I don't remember. That's why I omitted that detail.

Great, great game to be at. Santana's stuff just looked nasty (I think that's the hardest he's thrown this year--topping out around 95), and I don't think I'll ever forget Delgado's lumbering run from first. I was positive Werth was going to throw him out, but he inexplicably held on to the ball. It's like he thought it would be more sporting to give Delgado a head start or something.

On the down side, Wright looked lost up there, and Reyes just can't buy a hit. He's been smoking the ball for days, and it's always right at someone.
