This is the can of whoopass I've been waiting for them to open on someone's ass. Better than 7 runs so far is that they've scored them in 3 different innings.

And I'd be very pleased if they'd continue this at the expense of FU Happ.

Benjamin Grimm
May 07 2009 06:17 PM

Six-run leads are very nice.

But in a Mets-Phillies game, anything can still happen. They have to keep piling on the runs.

metsguyinmichigan
May 07 2009 06:17 PM

Nice job by Blastro! Pelf's got a nice cushion.

May 07 2009 06:18 PM

I looked at a quick discography for The Sweet and this isn't on the one I
found? I wore out this 45 as a yute, had no idea how sweet they were ...

Have you been paying attention the last two years?

John Cougar Lunchbucket
May 07 2009 06:27 PM

Throw a strike Mike.

Zvon
May 07 2009 06:33 PM

We needed 2 DPs to get outta that one, and we got em.

7-2 Mets

Lets get some more runs so I can relax a bit.
If we give this game back I'll hurl.

Benjamin Grimm
May 07 2009 06:33 PM

My hope for Pelfrey right now is that he go deep enough into the game to circumvent any need for Sean Green.

Let's get 6 from Pelfrey, one or two from Takahashi, and have Feliciano or Stokes finish up.

Zvon
May 07 2009 06:47 PM

Nice smooth 5th for Pelf.

I thought Takahashi was going to be starting in place of Perez.

Zvon
May 07 2009 06:58 PM

Howard smacks one over the 415 mark into the Mets bullpen.

7-3 Mets

Edgy DC
May 07 2009 07:03 PM

Gary: Jerry Manuel was talking earlier about getting Parnell a day off, about getting K-Rod a day off.

Edgy: I was too! I was talking about letting your starters pitch!

Frayed Knot
May 07 2009 07:09 PM

Would like to see at least one more strong inning out of Pelfrey.

We're certainly not doing so hot in the padding the lead department.

Zvon
May 07 2009 07:17 PM

Nice 7th for Pelf.
That should be it for him.

Feliciano up in the pen.

Willets Point
May 07 2009 07:23 PM

Seven runs isn't padding a lead?

Zvon

Sure it is.
So I'll relax when the score is 10-3 Mets.

I meant since the pitching change.
We've be running in place against Happ & Condrey while the Phils have chipped away with one or two.

Seems to me that we've gotten dicked on a couple of baseline obstruction/interference calls in the last year or two.

OlerudOwned
May 07 2009 07:32 PM

Awful call. Reyes made a clear effort to jump out of the way and Victorino forearmed him.

Zvon
May 07 2009 07:32 PM

That was one messed up play.
I think Victorino went out of his way to make contact with Reyes.
No?

bmfc1
May 07 2009 07:34 PM

That reminds me of the WBC game when Victorino stood on the base at 2d but subtly stuck out his leg so a throw from CF, after a catch, would hit him and he could advance.

Fman99
May 07 2009 07:35 PM

Victorino's a real scumbag.

Phillies have 13 guys on the field if you count the umpires and they're still down 7-3.

Frayed Knot
May 07 2009 07:36 PM

Same 1B ump who missed the call on a should-be GiDP before.

Zvon

Damn umps.

Victorino's not the problem there. A runner caught like that should do everything he can to try to get a call. And it's not like he threw the elbow maliciously, he just needed to make contract.
It's the stupid ump's fault for falling for it.

Zvon wrote:

Not only that, he should've struck out but for the fact that he convinced the home plate ump that he had fouled off a pitch that he never touched.

So he got the Mets twice in that inning. The fuck.

I totally disagree. It's dirty pool, he goes out of his way to bump Reyes and put a shoulder into him when Reyes is moving out of the basepath. And the ump totally missed it.

That's like defending A-Rod's ball slap in the ALCS back when.

I am going to start calling Victorino "The Lyin Hawaiian."

Edgy DC

It's not like David Wright hasn't tried to take out the centerfielder with a slide.

Again, blame the ump. Making or even faking contact is exactly what runners are taught to do in that situation.

Not the same - either in intent or in degree.

You're a bit broad with your use of the word 'cheating' here.

There's a big difference between one runner using his hands to smack someone hard enough to make them drop the ball and another making it look like: 'ooh look Mr. umpire, I just plum runned into this guy standing right in my way' in order to steal a call.

The latter is not only done all the time but is taught that way.
The former is explicitly against the rules and was so rarely seen that ARod doing it not only invited the near universal ridicule he got but deserved it as well.

And once more (with feeling); It WAS a BAD call - but the bad here was on Welke for making it, not Victorino for trying.

All 3 of the home runs were announced as being 400+ feet, with I think a quote of 425 for Wright's centerfield shot.

Fun game to be at. Shut up the morons from down south quick and they left early. "Jason Worth-less" chant that happened late in the game was kinda unfortunate given that he was 4-4 at that point.

Was fine with the Mets sticking with Feliciano for the whole inning. Very surprised to see Rodriguez and not Putz.
