LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr

Oh, Nyjer... if you let go of the bag, it won't be your bag anymore.

An unorthodox CS-- Morgan tagged out after sliding past second-- and two deep flies, and young Mr. Niese is out of the first.

Ahoy Ye Mateys! Captain Niese on the mound and Karstens walking the plank

That inaugural patch on Niese is huge

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
May 08 2009 05:49 PM

Couple of hits, couple of steals, a sprig of Delgado to perk up the flavor (and cut through the shift)... and you got a stew going!

Niese looks to be settling in nicely. (In the batter's box as well-- line-drive single for the youngun in his first ups.)

Ashie62

Niese now has the highest Mets batting average

Niese is making a case for himself tonight.

Five nice innings so far.

Kong76
May 08 2009 06:56 PM

That was a nice decoy play an inning or so ago by Reyes when Niese threw
a bad pick-off throw to first after Morgan already left the bag. The ball sailed
into the foul territory abyss and Reyes kept Morgan at second instead of
him winding up on third or worse.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr

Niese has been solid (though Morgan, Sanchez and Mclouth seem to have him solved). Otherwise, we be wendin' our way through some doldrums, me hearties.

I wonder why they go to Green (ERA 8.76) instead of Stokes (ERA 0.00) there.

And I wonder why they don't have cameras installed in the bullpens, and instead force us to look between the fences for a glimpse of the relievers.

I think we should refer to the bullpen as the bullcave until further review.

Oh I know what's going to happen.
But (assuming we don't get to the 9-hole and PH) we KNOW Parnell is on today and we don't know what Putz will be so there's no point in making the switch

Swan Swan H

Sheffield may not be hitting much, but he either has a great eye or is drawing a lot of respect - six hits and eleven walks so far, adding up to a semi-respectable .360 OBP.

You have to think he's earned another start, next week versus Atlanta. With Ollie still on the DL the only other choices are Redding, who just went in AAA, and Figgie who's been blackballed apparently.

He was warmed up when it looked like it might be a save situation.

I was expecting to see Stokes on the mound for the ninth, though.

Those bullpens are absurd. I have a feeling that in the next year or so, the architects will be called in to revisit the design.

Bullpen design is one thing CBP has over Citi (and one thing they absolutely nailed).

]You have to think he's earned another start, next week versus Atlanta.

I certainly do! The only other option I can think of would be Takahashi, but given how well Niese looked tonight, I'd go with him.

]Bullpen design is one thing CBP has over Citi (and one thing they absolutely nailed).

I agree with that. Someone over in the Citi thread suggested re-orienting the two pens so that they run perpendicular to the field, and that makes a lot of sense to me. It wouldn't be as nice as CBP, but it'll be better.

Rockin' Doc
May 08 2009 09:50 PM

Edgy was the mastermind that suggested rotating the two bullpens 90 degrees. Seems like the easiest and most logical solution to the current set up.

I like winning streaks. Great job by Niese. He certainly earned another start in my view. If it were up to me, I'd keep trotting him out there as long as he can give the team a quality 6-7 innings. Perez needs to pitch effectively in Buffalo after he gets off the DL before I would consider bringing him back.

Gwreck
May 08 2009 10:17 PM

I liked Niese tonight. No walks. I thought he struggled with control when we saw him last September.

Woulda been fine with Parnell for the 9th over JJ but not a big deal either way.

Nyjer Morgan's a very good outfielder.

Benjamin Grimm
May 09 2009 05:00 AM

Another option for that next start may be Redding, but I hope it goes to Niese.

You can join these guys - I spotted them at the game last night...

Fun game last night, my second win at The City (now 2-2), and the first time I've seen the Apple go up in person (thank you Carlos). I also happened to scream "Show me the Apple Carlos!" immediately before he launched that shot (I've got witnesses), so my supernatural Mets powers seem to still be strong this season. The key I think is that I use them in moderation...

They also put in the base markers in the parking lot where showing where they were in Shea. (home plate, 1st, 2nd & 3rd and the pitching rubber).

The Yankee fan is my son's friend.
