I'd switch Tatis and Church in that hupothetical lineup(lefty on the mound, and Tatis is swinging a much hotter bat of late), but, yeah, point taken.

JCL and I both noted that when Reed was plugged in on Monday night (and this was echoed on Tuesday), he was batting ahead of Omir. Not sure what Churchy did, but it must be a doozy...

Two pearls from Jon Heyman, the most overrated--OHMIGOD, it's the KARS FOR KIDS COMMERCIAL! ARGH!!!--"expert" in the business. The former is unattributed, the second his observation:

• David Wright and Jose Reyes have disappointed at least one Mets official so far. "Maybe they have a hot streak in them."

• The Mets look nervous whenever Johan Santana pitches, like they're not going to live up to his standards. And they often don't. Crazy that they're 4-3 in his starts with his 0.78 ERA.

Hell, the place is devoid of Yankee fans in the lower levels during regular games, based on what I've seen on Sportscenter.

They're flying to San Francisco (6 hours) in the lap of luxury on their chartered airplane, with prearranged transportation from park to plane to hotel. Even if they were to not leave NY until 9 tonight, they'd arrive in SF at midnight and not have to play a game until 7 PM (local time) that night.

Unless the Mets require 15 hours of sleep each, I can't see how this would be an issue. Travel day complaints are a load of BS in my opinion.

If they were flying commercial coach and had to take public transportation, then I might have some sympathy.

The Braves' pen is probably pretty depleted too. Anyone know who they've got left?

Gonzalez is it. And he had a blown save shoved up his ass last night.

Feliciano due up this inning. Hopefully, if he bats, it will be a clear sacrifice situation.

Is Delgado the last hitter left?

He could go up there and "lean into one," a la Rudy in Bad News Bears.

Santos (forgot about him) hits for Feliciano.

It's all Takahashi the rest of the way.

Rudy's arm wasn't as helpful.

If I'm counting right, the Mets have yet to use only Delgado (possibly unavailable) and Takahashi in this game (plus Santana, Maine, Pelfrey, and Livan). i wouldnt have wasted Santos here (pinch-hit reed for the pitcher not for castro)

The Braves have yet to use Gonzalez, and their 4 other starting pitchers.

I'd have to think that the longer Gonzalez vs. Takahashi goes the more in the Mets' favor things are because Gonzalez is less able to pitch multiple innings effectively.

Yeah, really. Resources are rapidly dwindling. You have to make your moves very conservatively.

And that's it. Santos is out. On to the 12th inning.

Keith suggested Ramon's quad could be an issue in extra innings. His father once marveled to him, he added, that Gary Carter caught that entire nineteen-inning game in Atlanta 24 years ago.

It's Johan's throw day.

yeah. i understand firing your last bullet if you have a runner in scoring position, but to use up Reed and Santos, likely your last two hitters (if Delgado was available wouldnt we have seen him already?), in such low percentage to score spots i dont like

a good reason to use him before bringing your last reliever into the game, because he wont pinch-hit for anyone else and takahashi basically cant be removed at this point unless a starter is going to pitch

Entering 2009, the Mets have lost ten games in which a Met has hit a grand slam, the most recent of them the infamous Murphy on third, nobody out ninth-inning debacle of last September.

On the other hand, they had five baserunners thrown out last night and won on a walk.

True. The loss was softened by the fact that everyone else in the division lost AND we are still in first place.

Extra inning losses don't hurt more than other losses to me. It's some (not all) of the management choices that frustrate me more than the result.
