Happened Again

A friend, a woman, nearly perfect in every manner. Engaged to a textbook douchebag that's going to make her miserable.

How do these things come to pass?

He's probably got a big hog.

It's occurred to people, but he's certainly not what people think of as traditionally attractive.

(pretending to miss implication)She has far more animosity toward the Il Douche than I do.(/pretending)

You actually get quite a few hits when you google his name and "douchebag."

Does he have any attributes that might explain this engagement ?

He's got money. He's a politically connected big shot. Gets access at political events. Occasionally gets on cable as a talking head. Then he comes home and treats people like shit.

She brought him to my wife's birthday dinner. My friend Tim recognized him. It turned out they went to rival high schools in the Pittsburgh area and competed against each other for years in forensics. But before Tim had put the pieces together, he slid down and introduced himself, and said "I'm certain I know you from somewhere."

A-hole's response: "Perhaps you've seen me on television."

As a friend don't you feel obligated to tell her that she is making a huge mistake. I may have worded that wrong but if you and I assume other friends of this lady see him as a jerk then what do you do? , say nothing or say something?

I'd say nothing. Unless she was my sister. And even then, I might say nothing. (Disclosure: I never had a sister) Unless he was an axe murderer. Butting in usually ends up bad for the butter(er).

Its the power. Or the perception thereof. Its the money, its the fame.

I've been there so many times I could write a freaking book.

As a general rule - if you like the gal and want to maintain the friendship - keep your lip zipped.

She's made her choice, nothing you say is going to change her mind and she doesn't value your opinion as much as she does his.

Once she knows you dislike her beau, the relationship between you and she will change for the worse.

She's an adult, can make her decisions and there are things about her that you do not know which attracts her to douchebags.

Sigh for her and move on.

There's things I do know about her which so attract her. At least, I think I do. There's also the obvious matter of her desperately wanting children and this guy being in the right place at the right time.

I'll come out and say it. The guy is soupcan's neighbor.

Here's the electronic converstaton with my wife this morning. Names are changed.

Wife: Monica's date is Sept. 19. Can we be missing for our own anniversary?

Me: Whatever you like. I'm not comfortable with the lie, even though I lie on the inside every time I don't tell him "I hate you."

Wife: Sigh. I like Monica, I don't want to disappoint her. I don't like Engelbert. I'd like him to go on a deep space mission without companions or any communication devices.

Poor Monica - fated to a life as 'Mrs. Humperdink'

If Engelbert goes into space...will he be able to pack his favorite snack, Milk Duds?
