The Schaefer Mets Player and Pitcher of the Month for April 2009 is, not at all surprisingly, JOHAN SANTANA. This is the Santana's third consecutive time as Player of the Month. (He was both Player and Pitcher of the Month in August and September of last year as well.) This is Johan's fifth time as Pitcher of the Month. Santana was 3-1 in April with an ERA of 1.10. No other pitcher came close, either statisically or in Schaefer points.

Among non-pitchers, Carlos Beltran tallied the most Schaefer points in April, finishing second overall. Beltran hit .388 in April and slugged .538. He led the Mets with 31 hits, and his 2 home runs and 14 RBI were second on the team to Carlos Delgado's 3 homers and 16 RBI.

And the Schaefer Mets Relief Pitcher of the Month is, for the third consecutive month, BRIAN STOKES. Stokes, one of the few bullpen holdovers from last year, pitched 11 innings in April, with an ERA of 0.00. He lost his only decision of the month on an unearned run.

Great to see these cards again. The '74 photo is probably too high-quality, but the action shot works perfectly for its set. And I'm still madly in love with that Stokes card, even if Santana should get the relief award too since the mere sight of him gives us so much of it.

Leading the league in batting average doesn't even get Beltran in the Santanosphere.

I was on par with the rest of CPF, basically. Santana had 22.04 for me, leading pitchers and all players. Beltran had 16.79 for me, leading batters, and Stokes had 6.50, leading the relievers. The players I didn't favor as much as everyone else were Murphy and Wright, and I was way more favorable to Reyes.

MLB concurs with Schaefer voting as Santana is National League Pitcher of the Month for April.

Beltran led the league in batting average-- but even he hasn't been in Pujols' hitting class this month (8 HR, 12 XBH, 22 R, 28 RBI, .337/.457/.675 for April).

Santana was the class of the league, beating the pants off of every pitcher in baseball in every category that counts (save elusive wins) whose name doesn't rhyme with "Mach Steinke."

Though I think we're still leaning a bit heavily toward over-rewarding pitching, I have absolutely no problem with the month's Schaeferin'. If he pitches at anywhere close to this level for the rest of the year, I can see him drinking this team's Schaefer milkshake straight through November.

Beltran and Pujols are most definitely in the same ballpark. If you use the 1.4x OBP method to calculate OPS then Beltran's OPS is higher than Pujols.

The best way to rationalize Beltran having a better season than Pujols is to adjust for Citi Field. To date, Beltran's road stats are significantly better than Pujols'. For what it's worth, Wright's road stats are also among the NL's best, though not nearly to the extent of Beltran's.
