I'm pretty sure Manuel makes these lineups using names out of a hat.

Where's Murphy?

Sitting against the lefty, because the book says lefties can't hit lefties, even if this lefty has hit lefties pretty well?

Ceetar

No more pulling Santana with like 95 pitches. He's going to get an extra day of rest this time through, so all the starters should be pushed just a little bit more.

So have Sheffield and Tatis.

Sheffield, career vs. Johnson:

6/40, 2 XBH, .150 Avg/.271 OBP/.250 Slugging

But, y'know, he's a righty. And... um... he's got defensive experience in San Francisco's outfield?

Ashie62
May 16 2009 01:48 PM

I think Jerry wants to play Sheffield full time as Sheffield is rounding into baseball shape.

Murphy? He may soon be getting all the time he wants at 1B and spotting in LF

Of course this OF juggling could have been avoided by bringing in a big bopper during the off season..like Manny!

Kenny Albert sets up Eric Karros......

" Seven Cy Youngs between them....Johnson and Santana"

Karros " When I look at this match up I see the best in the game today against the best of all time , the best ever in RJ yyybbb"...

best ever , really?

When I think of best ever I don't think RJ , but maybe I'm not thinking right.

Edgy DC

I guess you mean that ironically.

Castillo leads off with a hit.

They've been utterly merciless on Molina. (The long-stride power pitcher procession doesn't help-- guys like Lincecum and Johnson are TERRIBLE at holding on runners.)

smg58
May 16 2009 02:16 PM

I'm thinking that Mannuel is playing Sheffield regularly right now because the loss of Delgado does leave a void in power in the lineup.

I've decided that I don't want Bengie Molina this offseason. He'd have to hit like Piazza to make all these stolen bases an acceptable loss.

Edgy DC

bmfc1
May 16 2009 02:18 PM

smg--I agree. I posted about this possibility on Thursday. He can definitely hit but the Mets can't think much of his throwing ability.

OlerudOwned
May 16 2009 02:18 PM

Even if he isn't quite the same pitcher anymore, I sure do enjoy watching the Mets knock Johnson around.

Paul O' Neill is another like that....

Sanchez is the 2nd worst lefty in the league at holding runners, and the rest of these clowns are much good either.

Molina has thrown out 33% for his career, including 35, 30, 18, 31 the last 4 years (he's at 22% so far this year) he did so with 3 different teams, so you can probably say that represents his true ability rather than a reflection of the pitching staffs he caught.

thats not to say i necessaruly want him, but his ability to throw out runners wouldnt be the reason i'd want to stay away

Nice back-handed toss by Johan. I hope he wins both the Gold Glove and the Cy Young.

How didn't he win last year? I mean, Maddux is great, don't get me wrong... but at this point, he simply CAN'T be the equal of Johan, athletically. (Hell, I'd go Zambrano over Maddux these days.)

Swan Swan H
May 16 2009 02:44 PM

That was kind of a back-handed toss by Edgy as well. Got me focused.

I take a little nap and wake up to a 3-0 lead. I may sleep through September 30 and see how that works out.

May 16 2009 02:59 PM

The Giants are flailin' and failin' with Santana's changeup.

Fox booth talking about why Bochy starts lefthanded hitting Ishikawa at first base instead of the righthanded batting Aurelia. Karros states, that Santana's best pitch is a change up and by starting the lefthanded batter you effectively take that pitch away from him. Befor he can even complete the sentence, Ishikawa flails helplessly at a change up to strike out and end the inning.

Too bad Santana can't throw the change to lefties. Damn, he would be unbelievable if he could do that. Maybe if the announcers would shut their mouths and open their eyes they wouldn't sound so clueless sometimes.

metsguyinmichigan

I used to like Randy Johnson, especially in 2001 when he beat the Yankees in the Series. Then he became a Yankee, and I disliked him. Now that he's a Giant, I can't get over the Yankee taint.

I'd take Dibble over this a-hole-- at least Robby's Kenny Powers-brand amusing.

I agree with that...but.

As Wright's leadership shows, this team doesn't need to be a bomber team. And Sheffield isn'tthat anymore either. He is doing well, getting singles, high OBP, but he's not hitting home runs, so to pretend he's in there for power..silly. But they can be a fast aggressive team, and win, without the power Delgado brings.

Even if he hasn't been launching balls over walls, he's been showing the mechanical signs of some thump-- power comes from bat speed, and his wrists seem to be propelling ye olde bat head pretty quickly through the zone (if he's getting around on Lincecum). Manuel appears to think similarly.

Murphy and Reed aren't markedly faster on the basepaths than Sheff.

I mean, he swings at everything, and makes Reyesian baserunning choices... but man, that bat speed and coordination. And he's got good hands and instincts at third, too (especially considering he's got Murphy-in-OF level prior experience there).

Between the water, and the walkable, open concourses, it puts the "park" in ballpark.

At night, though, the winds can make it murder on the underdressed fan. While visiting fam, caught a late August Giants-Cubs game a few years back on a Saturday night, and got caught cold and cashless... ended up having to sign up for a credit card under a phony name, just for the free fleece blanket. "The Mets have never swept a four-game series in SF" -- Kenny Albert, several times today

1) Four-game series are RARELY swept ... by anyone at anytime

2) Now cut that number in half (less really) to do it on the road

3) then figure that four-game series are rarely PLAYED ... particularly by inter-division opponents where first 2, and now 1 visits per year are the rule

Fgirl (22 mos.) beds down after lunch every day for 1.5-2 hours or so. I usually take her up to our bed and nap with her.

The wife takes Fboy (age 4) downstairs and puts on shows that don't appeal to little kids, usually about decorating or something. He naps some of the time. The wife isn't much of a napper so she's OK with letting me take Fgirl upstairs for the long nap.
